Extended Summary
Since discovering a photo of himself and Hugo at the Battery, the same photo Xavier gave Hugo for his birthday, Xavier has been harbouring suspicions that Hugo isn’t dead. He decides to stake out the Battery over night, but doesn’t see anyone. Just as he starts to believe he’s living in fantasyland – hoping against hope that Hugo’s alive – Ruby tells him that she’s overheard that Leah’s former husband, Vinnie, was a police informant and that the cops faked his death and gave him a new identity.
Xavier’s suspicions are aroused again and he goes to see Angelo who was present when Hugo supposedly died. Angelo confirms the tragic story. He was there. He saw Hugo die – end of story. Xavier seems convinced, but Angelo is rattled that the boy is so close to the truth. Angelo goes to Alf to see if he’s said anything to Xavier. Alf is adamant that he hasn’t – doing so would only cause Martha more pain and that’s the last thing he wants. Angelo believes him, but it does little to quell his suspicions about Xavier. Xavier later questions Alf about Vinnie, and voices his thoughts that Hugo could also be in witness protection. Alf manages to put Xavier off the scent, and asks him not to mention his theory to anyone, namely Martha, as it could just bring false hope..
Gina is having problems with Xavier too. She and John are both keen to continue a physical relationship, but Gina is constrained by her agreement with Xavier that John won’t stay over at their place. John cheekily suggests that that doesn’t preclude her from “spending some time” with him at his house and Gina goes along with that. She arrives home late and it’s not until the next morning that she realises that Xavier didn’t come home at all.
Gina is beside herself as she tries to track him down and then, when he finally contacts her, she’s very suspicious when he suggests that he simply fell asleep at Ruby’s place and spent the night there. Gina tries to catch Ruby out, but when she confirms that Xavier stayed over, Gina reluctantly accepts it. She still has her suspicions however and none of this goes anywhere near solving her problem of how to spend more private time with John.
Now that some people know about Rabbit, Miles can’t duck the issue of seeking help and Rachel sets up an appointment for him to see Michael who’s a shrink. Marilyn and Alf, both desperately worried about Miles who is now constantly being followed around by Rabbit, hope that Michael can help him. Miles however is torn. He feels that either way he loses. If Michael puts him on medication he could lose Rabbit and if he doesn’t go on medication he risks losing control of his life. Rabbit is equally apprehensive knowing that Michael’s prospective treatment may see Miles taken from her. It’s decision time for Miles and it’s clearly a very difficult choice for him to make.
