Extended Summary
Hugo has returned to the Bay and Gina is stunned to see him standing in front of her in the school. He tries to apologise for everything he’s done, but she’s not interested, she just wants to know why he’s there. He tells her they are all in danger, and he came back to make sure they were okay. After he was found out in the town that he was relocated to, he knew the men after him might come after his family. As he was waiting for Xavier, someone spotted him so he drove off, before finding himself at the school. She asks him where he’s staying and he asks if he can stay with her – Gina tells him that he can stay for one night and then he’s gone.
Angelo thinks Hugo is still in the Bay and that Gina knows something. Charlie wants to question her that night – get it out of the way, and he agrees. They end up running into Gina on the road as she drives home. She isn’t in the mood for their questions, especially with Hugo hiding in the back seat, and pleads with Angelo to give her a night of peace. He relents, and tells her they will be around in the morning to question her. But he gets a strange feeling from her, and it bothers him, he decides he needs to go back and see her that night.
When they get home Hugo confronts Gina, hurt that she’s so angry with him and not thankful that he’s alive – but she won’t budge. He’s not the son she raised – not after everything he’s done and as far as Gina is concerned, Hugo is dead to her. Hugo tells her that he’ll wait for Xavier to get home and then he’ll leave. He then tells Gina the whole story of what happened – whilst he was in Indonesia he had burnt through his savings and started doing odd jobs around the resorts, before starting to take other jobs on the side – people smuggling. It was only minor stuff at first, but after finding he was pretty good at it, he found it hard to not carry on. Hugo insists that he is not that person anymore, mainly because of his love for Martha, and it wasn’t Gina’s fault that he ended up as he did. He heads to the door, intending on leaving for good, but a tearful Gina calls him back at the last second and embraces him – “Don’t you dare leave again”.
Xavier is worried when Hugo didn’t meet up with them to pick up his supplies, he wants to go out looking for him, Ruby doesn’t think that’s a good idea, but Xavier’s adamant. They’re waylaid by Martha, who, lonely, invites them to dinner. Xavier is pushed into it by Ruby, and ends up wolfing his meal down at the Diner, desperate to get out and search for his brother. Martha is left a little suspicious by his behaviour, but Xavier and Ruby manage to cover. When they arrive home, they’re all stunned to see Hugo there with Gina. When Martha sees Hugo, she’s in complete shock and faints.
