Extended Summary
Upset at Tony for refusing to abandon the boxing match with John, Rachel doesn’t want to listen to his explanations. She goes to see John, asking him to call off the fight, but he refuses, which only angers Rachel further. She and Tony don’t speak over dinner, and when they do it’s only to argue – things aren’t well at all. After Marilyn and Irene tell her to let the boys play their games, Rachel changes tact, giving Tony a first aid kit and wishing him luck. A boxing ring is set up outside the surf club, and Colleen offers her services to referee. The match begins, but neither of the men want to throw the first punch. They dart around the ring, facing off and goading each other, but do it for so long that people get bored and leave. Eventually a fed up Colleen announces that she’s going shopping, stating that she’s seen better punch-ups in the boxing day sales. Finding themselves alone, John and Tony end up quitting the fight before it’s even started.
Jill Carpenter blows into town, and heads to the Diner, where she asks Alf the name of a good local hotel. Alf suggests The Sands and she finds it appropriate given where she slept last night. She thanks Alf, calling him gorgeous and says she’ll see him around. Irene and Marilyn tease him about it, Marilyn also calling him gorgeous as she leaves. Unfortunately Colleen overhears this and becomes convinced that Marilyn is trying to seduce Alf. Later that evening Jill is in the bar, and immediately takes a liking to John, offering to buy him a drink. She’s aloof and does whatever she wants – and she certainly doesn’t mind a drink. Flirty with everyone she runs into, people aren’t quite sure what to make of her.
Romeo receives a letter that distresses him. It’s one of many he wrote to his mother and it’s been returned again – it seems like she couldn’t care less about him. The other members of the household note his change in mood, and when Romeo tells them about it, they try to be positive. But Romeo isn’t interested – he just wants to forget about her. Miles advises him that shutting her out might not be the best move. Romeo considers what he should do, but is completely blown away when his mother Jill arrives on his doorstep – “Hi Todd”. What is Jill doing in the Bay?
