Extended Summary
Penn is writing a letter to his father detailing his experiences in the Bay – his father has obviously been in the Bay before, but what was his connection to Summer Bay? As the letter continues, it transpires that Penn used to live in the Bay with his father and mother, and that they had some troubles there. Penn offers to donate some money to Tony’s boxing project, which Tony is enthusiastic about, but Rachel isn’t, and it creates more boxing related tension. He uses his new ties with the boxing club to help get Angelo’s restaurant up and running. It serves to reunite Angelo and Charlie, and as he watches them on the beach, Penn does something completely unexpected – he breaks a window in Charlie’s cop car, sets fire to a batch of boxing leaflets and throws them into the car. What is Penn really up to in Summer Bay? As he leaves the diner at the end of the day, Colleen spots him finishing his letter and asks if he’s up to anything important. He says he isn’t, screws up the letter and discards it.
Mr Oddly is still causing tension at Summer Bay House. Miles has found him buried in the sand, and in the shower and is convinced Alf is behind it, to get supposed revenge on Miles. After all, Alf believes Miles is behind all of his torment. The pair argue, with Alf and Miles both firm that they haven’t been up to any funny business with Mr Oddly. Tensions erupt again later on when Alf finds Mr Oddly in another bizarre situation.
Angelo is still hurt by Charlie’s lack of belief in his ability to get the restaurant going – she explains that she doesn’t think he doesn’t have the ability, but that anyone in his position would struggle. Charlie is saddened when she learns Angelo can’t open the restaurant in time – he thinks she will gloat, but Charlie tries to comfort him. She thinks it wouldn’t be the end of the world if they just had to pay a fine to the Surf Club and open a bit later, but Angelo doesn’t want to hear it and asks her to give him some space. However things change when Penn offers to help assure the restaurant’s opening by using the kids from the boxing program. Angelo is taken aback, but gladly takes the assistance, wanting the restaurant to open on time.
Leah can’t help but feel Elijah wishes he was back working as a missionary. He tells her he doesn’t, but she’s not convinced. When Elijah literally bumps into Penn, there is some strained words – it seems Penn might have sort of issue with the church. Colleen tells Leah she doesn’t think Elijah is going anywhere and Charlie tells her she just needs to ride it out – but she isn’t so sure she can. When she finds a letter from a volunteer organisation, her heart skips a beat. She confronts Elijah about it, he assures her there was nothing sinister in the letter, he was just keeping on top of things, making sure they knew he was around if they needed anyone. Elijah is unhappy about her level of hostility and in the heat of the moment, he signs the letter, committing himself to the agency.
