6. Lucas and Matilda - 120 points
Mattie and Lucas were cute. There isn't a lot more one can say about them. The fact that the actors were an off screen couple as well may have influenced some voters. The ML fans also seem to like Rhys Wakefield's looks...which is always a factor in these sort of things, as is the teenage relationship of the day, which always proves popular amongst younger fans.
7. Noah and Hayley - 115 points
Hayley and Noah were soulmates. They were, at the time, an
off screen couple too. Hayley was the girl next door, Noah
was the kid with attitude who helped her grow up. They were
pretty bland when compared with some of the other couples,
but they looked wholesome. Some fans have never recovered
from Noah getting himself shot. Hayley however got over it
pretty quickly and was embroiled in paternitygate, arguably
one of the worst stoylines ever, within months of Noahs
death.
8. Kane and Kirsty - 113 points
Kirsty and Kane seemed to dominate the show and the forum topics at one time, and their controversial love story was, well, controversial. These two were determined to be together no matter what the world, and Kirsty's family, thought. They endured one disaster and family drama after another, star crossed lovers at every turn. Whatever the writers threw at them they always seemed to come back together stronger than ever. The word "Babe" also took on a whole new meaning. Their legion of fans are still in mourning over their departure, but this poll proves that their popularity has decreased within a fairly short amount of time since their departure.
9. Shane and Angel - 102 points
Shane and Angel were about as big as you could get in their day. The actors hated each other but the characters were soul mates. They had great chemistry, and probably had more covers on TV week than J&M could dream about. Their wedding was a real tear jerker with Angel getting up from her wheelchair and walking down the aisle to Shane. They don't write them like that anymore. Their position in this poll so long after their departures proves that the couple has stood the test of time in their fans' hearts.
10. Barry and Irene - 97 points
Irene and Barry were the surprise cult couple of the year. You can predict with ease which "cute" teen couple are going to have a fan following. Irene and Barry beat the pundits and many of the mag cover couples, which considering that they were only actually a couple for about 4 months in 2005 and for 1 day , and 1 night, in 2006, was actually pretty amazing. Moreover, they are not young, nor are they cute. They managed to endear themselves to a wide range of fans, and this seems to be because fans of all ages love star crossed lovers, even middle aged ones. Great chemistry is great chemistry whether you are 23 or 53! Two imperfect people who were absolutely perfect together.
