Towards the end of the season, three of the members
of BTTB staff sat down and wrote down their thoughts
and memories of the previous twelve months, and
here's what they had to say... Dean: One of the highlights of this year
was Maddie's Eating Disorder - it was a breakthrough
point for Indiana Evans as an actress. Ever since
then she has shone above all the other teens in the
show. Her reaction to the scarring was realistic of
what most teenagers would do, as most things are
very superficial to them. The retreat story was
excellent as well until they ruined it with Dean &
Lucas fighting for Matilda.
Rachel has constantly improved since her
introduction, especially during the LOST storyline.
Amy Mathews is a great up and coming actress and
pulled Rachel's descent into despair brilliantly, as
well as bringing up the class and skill of every
other scene she is in. I hope she stays in the bay
for a long time to come.
Ryan: For me, my favourite storyline of the
year was the wonderfully complex storyline that took
in most of the bay in the first quarter of the year
revolving around Amanda and Josh and Project 56. It
was miles away from the gritty storylines much of
Home and Away's success had built upon, and whilst
you may argue that in that storyline we lose an
important part of what of Home and Away was about,
you can't argue that it wasn't damm entertaining.
Amanda is a character so far away from reality that
it makes such great entertainment. When she started
having a relationship with her daughter's boyfriend.
You didn't really bat an eyelid and if amongst, the
troubled teens and the cancer sufferers, we can have
this fun side as well, I'll be happy.
However there was some shocking storylines this year
as well. The Stalker Return and LOST were huge
storylines that failed to capture my attention and
perhaps Home and Away needs to tone down the number
of these huge storylines.
Skykat: For me there was an awful lot of good
storylines to comment on in this year. The second
half of Flynn's death was incredibly well done and
Alf subsequently moving into the Caravan Park House
and bringing the two long-standing characters
together was a highlight. Ric's bullying storyline
and Matilda's bulemia storylines were great examples
of well acted, character led storylines. As far as
acting goes there have been a few actresses who have
really stood out this year, Kate Ritchie has had the
year of her life in terms of really showing what she
can do and Amy Matthews is potentially the best
actress of recent times. She single-handedly makes
the relationship between Kim and Rachel believable
and her spiral out of control was hugely convincing.
However there were a fair few storylines I didn't
like either. The end to the Believers storyline was
a bad one, it dragged on far too long and it never
really gripped me. Whilst I liked the build up to
the stalkers return, the mind games with Peter, the
notes and bombs, the actual conclusion was rushed
and a huge let down. I was disappointed when once
again a huge promotion and cliffhanger failed to
deliver and the following LOST storyline was a huge
failure with Amy Matthews performance being the only
enjoyable aspect of it.
In conclusion I felt that the multi-character,
cliffhanger type, huge storylines were a let down
for this year. In comparison the smaller, more
character led storylines which gave certain actors
and actresses a real chance to shine, were far more
compulsive viewing for me.
