81. Colleen Smart (3 points)
Each time recently we've done one of these polls, Colleen has always done badly and each time it surprises me. Possibly became a bit long in the tooth or ill used towards the end of her 13 year stint, and the show has certainly lost a perhaps unique character. |

81= Kim Hyde (3 points)
One of the interesting things about time is that Kim's departure, over five years ago now, seems a lot closer than say Joey's departure did to the initial poll. Perhaps this digital age means things can sometimes not feel as distant as they once did, though obviously it hasn't helped Chris that much. Not that he'll care with the roles he's scored in Hollywood, perhaps proving those that mocked his first wooden utterances in 2004 wrong. |
81= Tiegan Brook (3 points)
In the history of these polls, Tiegan always seems to get a couple of votes from the same person each time, which shows two things. Firstly Tiegan obviously made quite an impression on this one individual, and secondly that they are fairly consistent with their voting. Certainly this means she's doing better than some of her contemporaries. |
81= Gina Austin/Palmer (3 points)
Gina is the 3rd current character to feature. Again it's not a great showing if you're appearing on the current show, but to be honest I've always found her cold, clinical and unlovable. |
81= Hugo Austin (3 points)
Popping out from beneath Gina, is her people smuggling son Hugo. Solely brought in to be part of the year long mystery, Hugo's popularity has dropped since 2010. But even then he didn't poll particularly great, showing what a damp squib the mystery actually was. |
81= Will Smith (3 points)
Like Gypsy, who he may or may not still be married to, Will has reappeared since the past vote, something that actually once seemed unlikely. However bringing him back as a killer who tried to frame Alf for it, basically seemed to undo practically everything that the writers had originally done with Will, and the votes have dropped. |
81= Nick Smith (3 points)
They say brothers have to stick together, and Nick scores exactly the same as Will. Like Chris Hemsworth, Chris Egan has made quite a name for himself away from the show. |
81= Shelley Sutherland (3 points)
Social worker that arrived with the rest of her family, and seemed do a hell of a lot of stuff in her first few years, but not actually have a great deal of stories of her own. Left after two years after Rhys' betrayal. |
81= Melody Jones (3 points)
Oh, how I wish this vote had been for Rhys and I could crack out some Mary MacGregor, but alas, Melody had little, if anything, to do with Shelley or Beth so here we look at one of the more troubled kids to have been in the show in the past few years. |
90. Beth Hunter (2 points)
Beth once made the top ten, but after that, the storylines dried and so did her popularity and most of the votes dried up as well. |
90= Ben Lucini (2 points)
Pretty surprised to see some votes, especially higher than Carly, since most posts in The Bayside Diner forum appear to be critical of his actions. Perhaps it's because he appears to have just 3 different storylines on his time on the show. Arguing with Carly, which runs about once a fortnight; chasing farm animals around the caravan park, which has happened twice and also the drunk friend from the army storyline, which both starts and ends his time on the show. |
90= Johnny Cooper (2 points)
A sort of prelude to the Braxtons, the Coopers rolled into Summer Bay in late-2006 and immediately started spreading trouble. However whilst some of the violence was bemoaned, they did manage to integrate themselves within the current cast as antagonists as opposed to be on almost an entirely different show. However the Coopers were rubbish hitmen. Despite two attempts they failed to kill Sally off. |
90= Roo Stewart (2 points)
Roo didn't score in our previous poll in 2010, but then again she hadn't really been seen for 21 years. She's scored 2 points this time which might have been seen as an improvement had she not been returned to the show for almost two years now. As one staff member said when we were analyzing the results "What the heck are they doing with Roo? They've got one of Australia's finest actors to play her and they done nothing to re-establish the character and now she's in the 90s". Even l'enfant terrible of the Stewarts, Duncan, has scored higher. |
90= Curtis Reed (2 points)
Mid 90's surfer who has not quite done as well as his foster-sister come girlfriend, Shannon. Most remembered for his blond locks and his Italian girlfriend, Laura, ending up in multiple pieces spread across the Summer Bay main line. |
90= Narelle Smart (2 points)
How gutted must Lyn Collingwood feel. She spent over a decade slaving away at the coal face and then Colleen gets included in the same update as her niece who appeared for about 4 months 24 years ago. |
90= Freya Duric (2 points)
The only vote that got a reaction from another member and one of two characters on the list I had to look up to find out who they actually were, a two-week long guest character is one of the more surprising votes on the list. |
90= Lachlan Fraser (2 points)
The second of what became a constant "doctor in the house" type character. First Kelly, then Lachie, James, Charlotte, Flynn, Rachel, Sid. This was very useful because it guarantees Lachie scenes and allows you to have one character a week cheat death in some way. Ironically the only person Lachie couldn't help cheat death was himself. |
90= Georgina Watson (2 points)
Made to look highly efficient by the fact that she has played sidekick to perhaps two of the most inept police officers in the history of the world. |
90= Tom Fletcher (2 points)
With the 7Two repeats I perhaps expected Tom to have done better. Still some characters from the repeats still got no votes, so it's not all bad and personally and it felt like he was missing for most of the last half of his stint on the show. |
