Scriptwriting Competition 2009 - Winners

When I was asked to judge the first BTTB Scriptwriting competition 3 years ago, I never imagined it was something I would look forward to in future years. . .yet here I am.

The desire to write, to say something, to change people's perceptions, is what drives professional writers - that's what makes a storyteller - and it's no less true in this competition. I never met Frankie, but it's fitting that she gives her name to this event. She was passionately interested in characters and stories and I miss her insight.

To the winners - congratulations! If you want to be writers, let this be the first step. If you don't, find other ways to be a storyteller.

The short listed entries were as follows - click on each one to download a PDF (Adobe Acrobat Document) of the entry:

Rock Bottom written by Little Wing

Drowning Not Waving written by Denbury

How could I not love the return of Angie - even in a mirror? Add to that a clearly crazy Josie in hospital and you have a scene which could be the stepping stone to taking a story in any number of directions featuring two much loved/hated characters who always dominate the screen separately and would be even more powerful together. (Though it will give a director headaches) Well done.

Unrequited Obsession written by bttb-rox

Kidnapped written by Cookie8f1

More Than Meets The Jai written by aj_benjamin

To Be Or Not To Be written by hunnibunni7000

Dirty Deeds Bad Blood and Dangerous Liaisons written by Cookie8f1

This wins for sheer audacity and originality. I don't think we have ever seen this story for a main character in H&A - and that's saying something. As with the over 17s this wins for the scene providing a perfect stepping stone for any number of on-going story strands. Not only have we got an Asian character - but a girl masquerading as a boy! It's delicious. Congratulations - but all of the nominees were of a very high standard.

Note from Dan (Admin and Co-Organiser)

I would like to give a special mention to 'bttb-rox!', who has come in at 2nd place in the '16 & Under' category for the third year running! Whilst it must be somewhat frustrating, the very fact that she has made the shortlist (let alone 2nd place) every year is somewhat outstanding. Competition is tough, and 'bttb-rox!' has shown a consistent quality in her writing, with judges enjoying her entries each year. The standard this year was exceptionally high and any other year she would have won with that entry. We certainly hope to see more of her entries in the future!
