  1. It's funny the random cliffhangers that we remember.
  2. Yes, it feels like a new era with the new generation of teens, Irene's intergration in the Bay and the exits of previous characters. The new look credits also add to this. Thankfully we still have the piano underscores for a couple more years, providing that continuity to the original show. They used Carly's theme during a Finlay/Irene scene last week, which was really nice.
  3. But you're the only one with the problem. Every time David (or Sophie's) name is mentioned you start the whole thing again. Stop making it sound like everyone else's issue. Because of this I've noticed more and more people commenting that we should stop mentioning David and Sophie. I agree to a point. but it's not fair that we should feel we have to just because we know who is going to reply and what he's going to say (for the billionth time). ALL past characters should be allowed to be mentioned from time to time, it's the natue of this forum, and we should be able to do so without fear of a certain forum member turning the whole subject into yet another rant. I don't think it's fair to ask everyone to not mention these characters. It would be fairer to ask a certain forum member to not comment whenever those characters ARE mentioned. It's getting beyond tedious.
  4. Makes sense to any reasonable person, but come on, he was listening to a tape! We all know that if you were listening to a tape during a car crash then as far as the police are concerned (even if the other person admits crashing into you), you're as good as guilty! To be honest I'm surprised 9/11, the Titanic sinking and global warming haven't been blamed on David Croft. I mean after all, he DID have consensual sex with a girl of legal age! If that's not proof that he's responsible for Abraham Lincoln's assasination I don't know what is!
  5. Not sure I agree with Michael butting in on this to be honest. Although I agree with him, it's not his place.
  6. I seem to recall when Sophie and Blake came back in 2002, Sophie asks Blake how Karen is doing, and he replies that she had a drinking problem but is getting over it now. Can you correct me if I'm wrong and fill in any gaps? Also, is it 1993 or 1994:
  7. Haha! I guess the writers forgot to consult you when they wrote the scripts back in 1993 ;) Would have been funny if they had kept it going and Irene was still calling Sally toots when they worked together at the school!!! We don't know at all what happened regarding Sophie/Karen timing. I find it perfectly plausible that they deliberately timed her return for after Sophie left so they wouldn't have to deal with that aspect of the story. On the other hand, I do like to think it WAS bad timing and they would have done a story if they could. Either way, it really sucks for us that it didn't happen. I would have loved to see them reunite/clash and it's weird they came so close (within just a few episodes). The scene back in 1991 where Sophie finds out it was Karen who caused the crash is such a powerful scene, we waited so long for a pay-off that never came.
  8. Looking back from a 2014 perspective, the black credits stand the test of time better. But at the time (1993) they were looking dated. Pastel colours were in (just look at the t-shirts on the show!). The 1993 credits fitted the period and at the time of the change they had a wow-factor. I see 1993 as a whole new era even before Blake leaves and Angel rocks up. It's a brighter sunnier look and the action moves at a slightly faster pace. We know what kind of stamp Des Monaghan left and what stamp Andrew Howie will put on the next two seasons. I agree, I see the change in credits as the start of a new era - which is good in some ways and not so good in others. It's already a vastly different show than it was in 1988 (scarily so). But there are still so many things true to the roots of the show, thankfully. I love Irene calling Sally "toots"! It's so cute. Love Irene and Sally's growing friendship in general.
  9. Hadn't noticed that!
  10. Alf went to see his folks in 1995 after running over Angel. And c.2002. Morag mentioned their father Gordon had died of Alzheimers (or at least alluded to it) during Alf's brain tumour/Ailsa ghost story arc. Gordon was also mentioned by Colleen, wishing he was here and Morag saying he'd be about 90 if still alive. I know all of this as do most others on here. Like with my post about Lynne McGranger playing drunk Irene, I'm discussing the show up to this point in the The Early Years. I don't mean to sound rude but I don't know why you keep replying to posts with "spoilers" about things years ahead. Maybe you think we don't know these facts?
  11. There have also been no mentions of Alf's parents since it was established in 1988 they were off on a touring vacation. But it was nice to hear Donald talk about the fact he wrote some manuscripts and always struggled to get them published. Was this the first mention of this?
  12. For me (in both the opening and closing titles) all the rowing looks odd, since we never see this happening on the beach in the actual show. I guess they wanted a change from surfing which is fair enough, maybe we did need a change, but all the shots of rowers just looks weird since it doesn't have anything to do with the actual show. Maybe shots of lifeguards from the surf club would have been better. I'll put this in spoilers as it hasn't happened yet, but does anyone remember...
  13. It was strange to see her smoking in a house full of kids, but in those days there wasn't quite as much awareness of passive smoking, and also as Michael said, she is having a hard enough time beating the drink, so to ask her not to smoke too was maybe a bit much to expect. I haven't seen this week's episodes yet but I have a strong memory of Sally catching Irene smoking whilst hiding behind some sheets on the washing line :D
  14. She also had very close-calls in 1995 (after the Dodge incident) and 1997 (when baby Paul was missing).
  15. Brace yourselves, I'm going to make a radical statement here but... I don't think I like Lynne McGranger's Irene as much as Jacqui Phillips'. That's not to say Lynne isn't good. In fact I'd go so far as to say she is excellent. She has really got the character that Jacqui created down to a tee. But I just really enjoyed Jacqui's performance and it's such a shame we didn't get to see her play Irene now that she is recovering. Suddenly seeing Lynne McGranger come in as the new "nice" Irene makes it feel disjointed. I would have liked either to see Jacqui play a fraction of "nice" Irene, or see Lynne playing drunk Irene before getting off the grog. It would just have made the recast flow better. Even though Irene "saw the light" at the end of her last stint, it was a very short scene and she left immediately after. I didn't buy everybody suddenly being SO nice to her when she returned. OK, so we can imagine that Finlay and Damien have passed on news about how well their mother is doing and we can also imagine people were giving her a break since her daughter was in hospital. But things like Pippa offering to let her stay in the house, when during their last meetings Irene made it clear how much she HATES Pippa and "do-gooders" like her, again it didn't flow well. A little bit of bridge-building would have been nice.
  16. Wow, great point. That hadn't even occurred to me!
  17. Ah how annoying! But thanks for going to that trouble! Glad to see I am not going mad!!! I like how they always remembered Ailsa's prison history throughout her time on the show. It could go for a long time without being mentioned but at suitable moments like that it was nice to see it brought up.
  18. Oh yes I have fond memories of both those storylines, although I didn't remember the woman's name. I'm looking forward to, and slightly hesitant about, Sarah's arrival. I remember really liking her, but then I also remembred really liking Lucinda and stand totally corrected on that one (due to the writing, nothing to do with Dee Smart's acting). Has anyone else noticed that "Sarah" has been in the background in a lot of Diner and Surf Club scenes for the past few weeks?
  19. I suppose the other thing is Pippa knows the pain of having to give up a child (Lynn and probably various others I can't remember who were crisis care or short stays or those offscreen), so she can't understand how Sophie could willingly do it. Yes good point.
  20. I've seen clips of these before and wondered the same thing. Thanks! I've got a question - I have a strong memory of the episodes where Robert Perez returns and holds Ailsa and Duncan hostage. I vividly remember a scene in Ailsa's dining room. She sends Duncan out the room and then whispers to Robert that she has been in jail for murder and if he hurts Duncan she won't hesitate to kill again. However, the episodes are on youtube and there is no sign of this scene! Please can someone confirm I am not mad? Was this one of ITV's infamous cuts in the UK?
  21. Yeah I enjoyed the music in the finale, not just the underwater stuff, but the Sophie/David music used in the flashback montage, and the sweet versions of Sophie's theme too (nice that we ended this year on Sophie's theme just as we ended last year on Bobby's theme). At first i was surprised we didn't see Shane's trial, but I think not showing it was actually quite effective for shock value. Things looking positive with Nick saying the judge seems lenient etc, then suddenly in the next scene Shane is being led away in handcuffs. We didn't really need to see the trial, this was more impactful. Ryan throws in a couple of lines at Bobby's party about how he's going to move on.. I presume that's pretty much his lame exit? He says he will probably end up back in Perth. I still like to assume he and Lou get together offscreen. Otherwise really, what was the point of ANY of it? I know she's been whiney and stroppy and annoying but I actually feel sorry for Sophie these last few weeks. I'm not saying I agree with all her actions but I can see how much emotional turmoil she's in and for that I feel sorry for her. What's been interesting to me is Pippa's complete lack of support. I like this because it makes a lot of sense for her character. Sophie is doing the complete opposite of what Pippa spends her life doing - taking in and bringing up children who aren't even her own. Meanwhile, Sophie is giving up her very own baby. It's not that Pippa is being deliberately difficult, she just can't physically understand how someone can do it. She's not built that way. I also like how Michael is keeping true to his promise that he made to Sophie earlier in the season, and continuing to support Sophie. Ah, the ever-changing location of Stewart's Point! I can't remember - has it been explicitly stated on the show yet that it's named after Alf's ancestors? Also, has the story of Alf's ancestors founding the Bay been mentioned yet? I have always remembered the scenes with Finlay trapped under the water. Did you notice that Blake encourages Finlay to breathe slowly (so as not to use up all the oxygen) but as soon as he swims away, she panics and starts breathing really fast? I was surprised that this wasn't the actual cliffhanger of the episode, as I had remembered, but instead we ended on an emotional cliffhanger with Sophie hesitating over signing the adoption papers.
  22. Quite possibly. I'm trying to think of other characters who made guest appearances for a long time before eventually becoming regular and the only other one I can think of is Peter Baker.
  23. I don't think it was a "torn paper" effect in 1993. It's just the same as the shots below from 1992 except all in colour instead of black with bits of colour. The only difference was the removal of the little brush stroke effect that was used in some shots: But as it was removed from the logo, it makes sense it would be removed from the shapes as they are supposed to be made from the logo aren't they? Either way it's all very 90s. All those pastel colours! The change in font made a refreshing change too! It certainly brought a much needed change at the time, but looking back I think the black credits stand the test of time better! Still dated but not as dated as those pastels!
  24. When Sally and Sam did the envelopes wrong I was expecting the usual reaction from Sophie. My jaw nearly hit the floor when she said it was ok!
  25. Well I always remember Roxy as being a rubbish version of Lucinda but having rewatched Lucinda's stint... I might reconsider that. Poor Lucinda, or poor Dee Smart more to the point, the writers really stuffed up her character didn't they? She went from being a well rounded character with lots of connections around the Bay to a one trick pony whose only remaining storyline was dragged out longer than anybody cared for. I may reconsider on Roxy when she arrives. I also remembered Finlay as being a somewhat damp version of Karen but I actually like her a lot this time round. Pippa and Michael's little arguement was very interesting, especially Michael's opinion that Pippa makes all the decisions and overrules him all the time - this will rear its head again and become one of the motivating factors behind so I found it interesting that Michael took it back and even apologised for saying it when it clearly is and will remain to be the case for some time.
