I liked him on H&A too and feel he was underused. He never had a killer storyline as such, did he? I found his romance with the cop a bit tiresome tbh. According to Wikipedia "The serial's producers tempted McLachlan with a contract that would allow him to also concentrate on his music career while filming". Wikipedia isn't always the most reliable source but it might explain some of why he never got any killer storylines really. I liked him and Bobby together and think it would've been nice to put those two together. She has more chemistry with him than with Greg and they were fun together. So who was H&A's next hunk who fell into that age bracket?

Ah, now there's that eternal conundrum! Though to be fair, if the genders were to be switched around you'd still wonder was the age gap a bit too much? A teenage schoolkid going out with an older person who is in a different place in their life. Marilyn had done a lot of living by this point - what age was she then? 21, 22? It's a pity they never got to properly have a go at the Haydn/Marilyn thing when he came back a few years later. That would've been more interesting because the pair of them had already accumulated quite a bit of baggage in their lives. Looking at those old episodes now, some of the values/morality (or whatever you want to call it) are out of step with now things are today. There are so many teenagers in the show who realistically would've been having sex with their boyfriends/girlfriends by now if the show was made today. Even more curious is the Pippa and Michael thing which someone reminded me of recently - it's heavily implied that there was no nookie between the pair of them before they tied the knot. Michael and Haydn were still cooped up in that caravan until the day of the wedding which is rather strange too.

Probably, though there are times when you'd wonder why some people don't get credited at all. Back in those days, was it difficult to write up TV credits? It seemed to be a bit of a big deal to change the actors in the opening titles

Obviously he had developed a knack for avoiding becoming funeral fare himself.
-
He probably asked to be written out. If you look at what he was doing at the time, Home and Away was never going to hold him for long. He was still making music with his band and on the verge of moving to London to appear in West End musicals. Then he was in Bugs (had forgotten about that BBC TV series).
-
Unless he and Pip got to test the suspension of his caravan before the wedding, it doesn't appear that he got to spend any time in her bedroom before they got back from their honeymoon.
-
Yet when Dale died, he got a church funeral.

Five Bedrooms is on the BBC iPlayer too and is well worth a watch. I also spotted him in Rachel Griffiths's film Ride Like A Girl. playing the co-owner of a racehorse.

It is odd that both Roger and Vanessa left and we never heard why. Unless of course the interviews they did at the time were printed in magazines which are now lost in the mist of time. Usually when somebody leaves H&A we know whether they are going of their own accord or have been axed. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that on the rare occasions they've given interviews about H&A, they've chosen not to answer questions about it. These are Hello magazine style puff pieces they're doing anyway so there isn't going to be any journalist asking questions. We are talking about events that occurred 30 years ago too, which won't be of any interest to anybody apart from people in their 40s and upwards. My guess is that both Vanessa and Debra see their time on Home and Away as jobs they had many years ago. Acting is one of the few professions where people continue to be asked about work they did 20 or 30 years ago. Do many of us really want to go back to a job we had 10, 15, 20 years ago? Both actresses would probably rather talk about what they're doing now. I doubt coming back to Home and Away would suit either actress, even if there was a reason for them to return. Vanessa is now a solicitor who mostly seems to do theatre work now. Home and Away might not suit her schedule now. It makes even less sense for Debra because she lives and works in Melbourne. That Harry Potter play she's in is going to run for quite a while yet and it probably suits her down to the ground to have that steady job and to sleep in her own bed at night. Anyway, both actresses are now in their 60s and might as well be the grandparents of half the cast.

Martha Stewart Sr - Belinda Giblin
cymbaline replied to Blaxland 89's topic in Character/Actor Discussion
Looks like they chose wisely in terms of actresses as well. According to the interview with Belinda Giblin on Digital Spy, she's happy to go off and do stage work when Ray Meagher is on his holidays -
I have my doubts about Ross's sexuality coming against him for that Lord of the Rings part. Sean Astin was probably always going to get it. His acting career never really set the world on fire but he was still a bigger name. And for viewers of a certain age, they'll remember him from The Goonies and as a minor teen idol. And if you applied that logic, would Ian McKellen have got the role as Gandalf? As to why he's not getting steady work, I honestly don't know. The acting profession has plenty of openly gay actors, directors etc. It could be down to homophobia or maybe just sheer bad luck. I never saw Ross in anything other than Home and Away so I can't comment on what his other acting work is like. Greg isn't a character who will have done him any favours as an actor. Apart from that lack of chemistry with Nicolle, Greg was a forgettable character. He wasn't one of the show's hunks (though looking at those photos, Ross has aged rather nicely). And as quite a few of the show's former actors have discovered, being in H&A is no guarantee of anything in the future. Times have changed quite a bit though. One of the BBC's biggest hits last year was Fleabag, in which the openly gay actor Andrew Scott played a straight romantic lead.

Yes, that's what I meant by "occasional appearances". ? The Harry Potter play is only on in Melbourne, in a theatre that has been especially converted for that purpose. The plan is that the play will run there for years to come. If you look at the website for the tickets, you'll see that the play runs twice a day, five days a week https://harrypotter.ticketmaster.com.au/both-consecutive/calendar/2020/01 We don't know how long Debra will stay with this production but for someone like her, it's ideal. It's a popular play, a steady job and is within driving distance of her home. I occasionally look at her Instagram account and it would appear that on her days off, she sometimes works at her "other job" which is doing voice coaching for women. So she no more needs Home and Away than a fish needs a bicycle. If she was to return to acting in soaps to any extent, my money is on more appearances in Neighbours.

I'm sure they're well paid to be passionate about it. I couldn't see Lynne getting other acting work if H&A was axed. She knows what side her bread is buttered on.

Auntie Jean was great but a quick google tells me Maggie Kirkpatrick is now 78. Would you like Maggie to play her again or for the role to be re-cast?

That's quite a character arc, isn't it? Going from being a good girl to a hard-faced felon to an accountant's wife.

Bobby Simpson - Nicolle Dickson

I think you missed my point completely. -
I think Ross Newton is a gay man (at least that's the impression I get after looking at his Instagram). Maybe that played into his lack of chemistry with Bobby? I never bought into them as a couple either. I thought she had better chemistry with Craig McLachlan's character.

Bobby Simpson - Nicolle Dickson

I wonder did acting in a soap come against the younger members of that original cast? Adam Willits and Sharyn Hodgson are no longer acting either, even though I thought they were terrific too. I don't think Nicolle would ever have become a leading lady on any TV show but I think she would've made for a great supporting character. At least she went on to have a decent career afterwards, albeit in the less exciting real world. -
I think Michael was one of the more believable characters on the show. He was a very human, flawed person who wore his heart on his sleeve. It can't have been easy for him to go from living a quiet post-divorce life to moving into a house full of raucous teenagers. His reaction to many of the troubles thrown at him were very realistic and what most of us would do. He wasn't a saint and never pretended to be. What I liked about him was that he was prepared to admit he had got things wrong, even if it could take a while for the penny to drop. Like most people, he was a complex mix of kindness, goodness, pig-headedness, pride and vulnerability. Mostly he was a good bloke and his chemistry with Pippa was very believable. It's lovely that in real life, he and Debra got their happy ending. It's a shame that the programme makers decided not to grant them that on the show. I'd love to know the truth behind why they axed him. Michael and Pippa were a nice anchor for the show and the sort of grounding those wayward kids needed. If there's one quibble I have, it's that we got to see less of Michael's playful side as the series went on. One of my favourite early scenes is where he lets Pippa think he has given Adam Cameron the details of where they're going for their honeymoon, almost doubling over with laughter. More of those sorts of scenes would have been nice.

Roxanne "Roxy" Miller - Lisa Lackey
cymbaline replied to jakeyy.'s topic in Character/Actor Discussion
She was pretty good at putting her foot in it and saying the wrong thing. She also got to kiss some gorgeous men, the lucky thing! Mostly though, she was a bit unmemorable. Before re-watching the show all I could remember about her was that she had short dark hair, she was Blake's half-sister and she got cancer. -
They did write him out with indecent haste, didn't they? One minute he's having an affair with Fiona, the next he's a widower, the next he's gone. Does anyone know why he left? Did he ask to leave or did the writers not know what to do with him once Bobby had died? He wasn't all bad, of course, but I mostly think of him as a flawed, weak character. Someone who ultimately let his wife and son down badly.
