I think the difference was that there was a shock factor, plus there were multiple lives on the line. Some of the more recent ones (Eden missing, Cash blacking out after arguing with Tim, Chloe killing her dad) have been about one (lesser) character the audience hasn’t been fully invested in, or it hasn’t been at the height of the drama. The better cliffhangers of the past have involved a “who will die” type element with multiple characters at risk together where viewers are left on the edge of their seat to see if their favourite will come out unscathed, or changed forever - like the bus crash, hospital bomb, John Palmer’s fire, the Sutherland’s mine shaft collapse etc. When the show picks the favourite, it makes it harder for everyone to connect. The show managed to do this jeopardy for Heather’s kidnapping of the heritage cast, and when Salt had the toxic gas… but is it too hard for the show to do these for the Aus finale, now that they are focusing on the UK finale?

Does anyone feel the recent years (maybe since 2016) the Australian season finales have been quite underwhelming, but the UK ones have been quite good? Even when we know there is drama coming (Tane and Felicity’s non wedding) the cliffhanger isn’t one that keeps viewers coming back.

I think they struggled with making the characters is 3D characters in the early 90s, and not just a "a cop" or "a teacher". Nick, Luke, Grant and Roxy were mainly cast as their occupation and on the flip side Lou and Ben were purely a vehicle for family dramas with limited connection to anyone outside of 2 -3 characters. This meant to an extent they only served one purpose or could work well with one age group of characters, limiting their storylines. When the show moved into the mid-late 90s with Travis, Stevo v2, Kelly and later Sally, Shauna, Harry and Vinnie we see these characters could have scenes with all ages and groupings of characters, whether it was socially or through their work.

Hi Guys, I have heard through some contacts that Plus7 is getting a revamp. In addition to adds, they will be having some (generic) fun facts about each show. Do we have a list of any or can we put our heads together and come up with some, keeping in mind that they would have to transcend time as they won't be updated regularly. An example would be that the show's working title was "Refuge".
