It's been superb reading with very realistic characterisation. I have very mixed feelings about it coming to an end, you know that it is but looking forward, as always, to the next chapter.
-
I can totally see this in my head when I'm reading. Another great chapter.

Looking forward to the next update, love this fic!

Great drama, brilliantlywritten, and I love the little touches of humour with the kids! One of the best fics I've ever read.

The story so far:- Kane has agreed to help Scott in exchange for Scott keeping his dark secret and by cover of night he heads for the old church. However, Jesse MacGregor unwittingly interrupts and, with a police patrol car closely watching them both, Kane is unable to keep his promise to dig up the stolen fortune. Desperate to protect his family, Kane has told them nothing and next day his birthday starts happily enough with a phone call from Tasha (now modelling in Paris). Dani has gone to wish Kirsty luck on her first day teacher training at Summer Bay Primary but at the last minute she freezes when she sees Kane and Kirsty kissing and the memories of the rape flood back. Kane drops Kirsty and Jamie off at school then fronts up to Scott who pulls a gun. The gun turns out to be fake, but in the fight that follows Scott knocks Kane unconscious. Kirsty has become friends with sympathetic Ron Wilson, an elderly teacher at Summer Bay Primary who once taught Kane and Scott. When Kane doesn?t turn up to collect them after school as arranged and one of Summer Bay?s sudden storm threatens, Ron offers to drop them off. The car almost crashes into Colleen Smart, but fortunately Ron manages to swerve at the last minute. Meanwhile, unaware of who the other is and that they both know Kane, Melanie and Dani happen to meet outside the Summer Bay surgery. In an emotional conversation, they learn that they have both been victims of rape and agree that a ?sicko rapist? should be left to die. Thinking Melanie is still with Kane, Scott goes to dig up the treasure himself. Furious to find it gone and knowing Kane was the only other person who saw where it was buried, he decides to pay Kirsty and Jamie a visit. Unable to shake off a growing sense of unease and unable to phone Kane because the phone lines are down in the storm, Kirsty is alone with Jamie in their isolated house... Uh..I hope the actual story is more interesting than I?m making it sound in these summaries! -

Thanks! I honestly don't know where that came from, it was just a picture in my head and the lines just happened. Well, I've got Motown playing and kettle on so I'm going to go off line now and do some more work on this fic. Still waiting, not very patiently, for you to follow up And If You Fall and Grace Notes. -
OMG, this story always brings a lump to my throat! I feel so much for Kane and LOVE the way you describe the kids.

Okay, I?ll do a very quick summary every few chapters and let you know when I finally post a new chapter! The story so far:- When he is seven years old, living with an alcoholic father and mentally unstable mother, Kane Phillips and his eleven-year-old brother Scott bury a jacket, rucksack and bloodied carving knife on the edge of the graveyard of the old Summer Bay church. Scott makes his brother promise, in exchange for him keeping Kane?s dark secret, that Kane will help him dig up the bag again one day. Kane is now grown up and married to Kirsty Sutherland. After tragically losing their first baby, Lily, they now have a five-year-old son Jamie and have settled happily enough in Summer Bay, Kane captaining the tourist ferries and Kirsty training to be a PE teacher. Flynn and Sally Saunders have gone on a round-the-world trip, leaving Rhys and Shelley Sutherland to run the caravan park in their absence. Now married and living away from the Bay, Dani and Jade have come to visit the family. Learning that Kane?s father, Richie ?Gus? Phillips, was a murderer, they unite in their efforts to gain custody of Jamie. Jamie knows that there are secrets in his father?s past because he?s often heard him waking from the nightmares. But not even Kirsty knows what happened that terrible night. But someone else does. And Scott Phillips, with his drug addict girlfriend Melanie, has finished his long jail sentence and made his way to Summer Bay to blackmail Kane into keeping his promise. -

Ohhh, I blame Dani for the lack of continuity myself, the characters in my fic really should remember what's going on in their lives! Sorry, just in a funny mood, I'm gonna go off line soon and do some writing. -

Thanks for your nice comments. You're not the only ones who forget stuff, I was reading this over myself and I just realised Dani didn't pick up on Alf calling her "Sutherland" (obviously she forgot she was married! ). -
Wow, what can I say? This fic really is brilliant! Thoroughly enjoying reading.
-
What I like most about this fic is that you sympathise with Dani just as much as with Kane. Great story!

Just to let you know that I decided to re-post ?promises to keep? from the very beginning before posting any new chapters. I was getting near the last few chapters and going over the previous chapters and making slight alterations helps me tie everything up better and also gives me a bit more time to work on the last chapters. If you don?t want to re-read chapters, but want to know what happens next in the story, check on this thread because I?ll let you know as soon as a brand new chapter is finally added. Sorry to do it this way, but I?m always pushed for time! -

No, sorry, I took the fic off ff.net as it takes me ages to upload etc. I decided to take a paragraph out of Always and Forever on Sat and I ended up stuffing up all the chapters so I had to re-post the whole fic, which took up nearly the whole afternoon. I know what you mean about trying to find stories, I have a few fave authors on there and the only way I can ever figure out if anyone's updated is going into "Just In" and then the programme! Claire, I finally found your site with the fics (plus a new one by you!!! ) so I'm gonna try and find time to settle down and read them all some time! (Loads of fics on there, Leanne!) I'm still going to upload all the chapters that were on here before the site crashed but I'll do a reminder with each one so ppl aren't reading them twice. -
Sorry that this is also short but I'm just trying to find my way with it again! <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
-
That was another great chapter, Ashirr-Leigh, and sooo glad you're continuing with this fic after losing all the earlier chapters. It's really, really good.
-
I'm beginning to feel like I know these kids, it's all so well written! Great fic!

Does anyone know how I alter the title of this topic as "promises to keep" is meant to be all in small letters (like a whisper) and it's really annoying me because it's got capital letters in! Or can some nice, kind person just change the title for me so that it reads like this *****promises to keep***** -
Fantastic to see you're back !!!!
