^ Most of the time, I stick to my first answer. If I change my answer, it usually turns out I shouldn't have done it!

From the answers I got, not many people know Belgian celebrities.

Poirot?

He's a fictional character created by Agatha Christie. So I don't think I can use him.

SURVEY: BELGIUM

Here are the correct answers.

01. What's the capital of Belgium?

Brussels

02. Do you know other cities/towns?

Bruges, Ypres, Mons, Antwerp are the answers I got.

Here are a few other Belgians cities: Ghent, Ostend, Waterloo, Leuven, Liège, Tournai, Namur...

03. What are our official languages?

3 official languages: Dutch (or Flemish), French and German

Flemish is a variant of Dutch. There are some differences between them, just like there are some differences between British English and American or Australian English.

04. What are the colours of the Belgian flag?

Black, yellow, red (vertical stripes)

Don't confuse our flag with the German one (black, red, yellow; horizontal stripes)

05. What's our currency?

The euro

06. In which century did Belgium become independent (if you know the exact date, you can also give it)?

19th century; 1830 to be exact.

07. Is Belgium a monarchy or a republic? (Do you know the name of our king/queen or president?)

A monarchy; our king is Albert II, his wife is Queen Paola. (see picture)

08. What are our neighbouring countries?

4 neighbouring countries: The Netherlands, Germany, Luxemburg and France

09. Do you know any Belgian celebrities (singers, bands, actors, sports...)?

The only answers I got were Sandra Kim (1st picture in 1986 when she won the Eurovision; 2nd picture nowadays) and Ishtar.

Here are some Belgian celebrities. If you click on some of the names, you'll see a picture. I thought it might help. You might know some of them but didn't know they were Belgian.

Singers: Kate Ryan, Axelle Red, Jacques Brel...

Bands: Milk Inc., Hooverphonic (you might have heard their song "Mad About You"), Nailpin, dEUS...

Actors: Jean-Claude Van Damme...

Sportswomen: Kim Clijsters (tennis, used to date Lleyton Hewitt), Justine Henin (tennis), Kim Gevaert (athlete)...

Sportsmen: Xavier Malisse (tennis), Tom Boonen (cycling), Eddy Merckx (cycling), Jean-Marie Pfaff (football)...

Others: Hergé (cartoonist), Tintin (fictional character created by Hergé), Victor Horta (designer, architect)...

Rising-flame, I asked my teacher if I could use Hercule Poirot, he said yes. So I'll use it. Thanks. :)

Eli, I also asked my teacher if I could use Marc Dutroux and Sabine Dardenne, he said yes. He was also surprised about that answer. They're not celebrities but they are famous, so I can use them. Thank you. :)

For the ones who don't know, Marc Dutroux is a paedophile who kidnapped and sexually abused 6 girls in 1995 and 1996. He killed 4 of them. Sabine was one of his victims who survived. She wrote a book on what happened. The English title of that book is "I Choose to Live". The other girl who survived was Laetitia Delhez.

There is a list of famous Belgians on Wikipedia (click me). There are probably other names you might have heard of.

10. When you think of Belgium, what comes to your mind (a place, food, a celebrity...)?

Chocolate was a very popular answer! :P Other answers I got were: Flanders, Brussels, the EU, the Atomium, mussels and chips, country involved in World War One.

Belgium is also famous for its waffles, beers and chips. I know Americans called them French fries but it should be called Belgian fries. They are so much better. :P

Thanks again to the members who sent me their answers. :D

I can't believe how much I forgot when I did the survey! Poirot! Jean Claude Van Damme! Tintin! Kate Ryan! Antwerp (is it just me or is that city also called Antwerpen? Cause I have a feeling that's what we call it )! Mons! Waffels!

Also I'm pretty sure I'd have a problem if I was asked to draw a map of europe... Looks like I overestimated Belgium, I think I wrote like 10 countries that I thought shared a border with Belgium

As for Mark Dutroux and Sabine Dardenne; I remembered seeing something about him on the news when he was arrested or something a couple of years ago, but I didn't really know who he was until I randomly found the book in a store when I was looking for stuff to read on the plane to Vancouver. I ended up reading the entire book, and while it was really shocking and disturbing it was also very fascinating to read her thoughts on everything, because they weren't always what I expected them to be.

Glad I could help :)

The city is called Antwerp in English, Antwerpen in Dutch and Anvers in French. :)

When Marc Dutroux was arrested, I think a lot of countries talked about it. I know most European countries and the USA talked about it anyway.

Yeah, probably like the case with Joseph Fritzl in Austria right now...

I think we call it Antwerpen in Norwegian, cause when I read the English name I felt like something was missing :P Plus in Norwegian we tend to not translate city names as much as they do in English (Moskva/Moscow, Brüssel/Brussels, København/Copenhagen, Göteborg/Gothenburg, München/Munich etc., etc., I'll stop listing cities and find some other way to bore you now :P)

Crap! I forget about Kate Ryan! >.<

Kate, I have something to say to you - Je T'adore! :P

(Barbara, I'm VERY sorry about the Belgian Independence answer - I was about 13 centuries off :P)

I completely forgot about Kim Clijsters & Justine Henin and I watch the tennis all the time. I read the answers and it's like, I knew that. Oh well.

I said chocolate. It was the first thing that came to my mind, but I'm don't really like that stuff.
