Ms Becky Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 So... would 'was' be wrong? Or just less common? Re. the their/there issue. The word they're is similar, but is an abbreviation for they are. I noticed that quite a lot of people get confused between your (as in, 'I like your shirt') and you're (as in the abbreviation of you are). My grammer is appalling most of the time though, so that might all be total rubbish
MarMar Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Both are correct, but were is used about unreal situations/advice. Your= something you own: That's your car You're= You are [something]: You're too small for this rollercoaster
lolajaney Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 You're= You are [something]: You're too big for this rollercoaster <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Lol I might be but I'm still going on it. Also sorry to be picky but your to needs to change to too Jane
MarMar Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Lol, yes... You're correct. Guess I wasn't paying attention
Soph Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Anyway, I have a question! As a northerner, I occasionally use 'were' instead of 'was' in everyday speech (eg. "That film were good") but putting slang aside, which sentences are correct below? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's a North-East thing as I do that too! When my mum is being all 'proper' we can drive each other crazy To check spelling could I suggest http://dictionary.reference.com/ and also Word (something which many people may not think of using).
I love music Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Mercury Girl, I can't believe you're from Norway - your grasp of the English language is fantastic!!! I wish I could speak another language half as fluently. The only bit of Norwegian I know is, isn't school spelt either skule or skool, something like that?
MarMar Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Thank you! School is skole in "bokmål" and skule in "nynorsk"("new-Norwegian"), so yes, you're almost correct.

(She went to Norway with her husband last year). And she said it was the most beautiful country she's ever visited -she's also been to Italy, Canada, America, Spain and Austria - so there you go, two complements in one night. And it's good to know I can speak a little Norwegian. Well, one word anyway.
beachbabe Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Yeah mercury Girl, how comes your so good at English? , I am born here and I am still not so good at. Although English is a subject you have to be naturally talented at, I find English Language at school so difficult like analysing articles and everything
