Platinum~Blonde Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 My SPAG isn't perfect but I attempt to post with the best SPAG I know, which should definately count for something amongst the entire posting community?
-Tess- Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Yes, I think that it's as long as it isn't 'txt' or as people are now doing, things like 'haii', and 'havee'.
Yabbie Creek Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 SPAG...there's a term I've never seen before! It's a good abbreviation though! As far as my opinions go, yeah, going the extra mile to correctly spell and punctuate the posts does help. But, at the same time, my feelings are that if I can understand the main point of a person's post, it's perfectly fine with me. I'm not saying that we should just throw the "SPAG" rule right out the window, but I am not going to jump all over a poster for having an entire post run like a run-on sentence either! Now, that being said, is my SPAG all right? I am an aspiring writer after all!

Emmadolly Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Hi, if my SPAG is wrong tell me, as my first language is Welsh. All my school work and uni work was done in Welsh. It is obvious that i speak English, but i think in Welsh and also dream in Welsh. If any of you want to point out where i am going wrong, then do so. ok
melliemoo Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 I think that everyone will take that into consideration. I have noticed that some of the moderators are from different countries and their first lanuage isn't english
.Cat. Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 My SPAG isnt perfect, and it doesnt help having a faulty key-board.
katya Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Just a thought on all this. I think that we have to concede that the detailed study of spelling, grammar and sentence structure rules is not for everyone. Most people use language for communication and in this context it is important that "standard english" is used to the extent that it allows people to understand other people's communication. Slavish adherence to "professionally correct" spelling and grammar rules is not necessary for this. I always told my students that the greatest sin in writing was to be boring!! If you're boring nobody will want to read what you write regardless of how grammatically correct you are. Also remember that English is a living language. Rules of usage, spelling etc. are always changing. A change becomes "standard english" when the majority of users accept it. I really have to agree with this statement. It's only my opinion, but I think the SPAG rule can be taken a little too seriously sometimes. Is it such a bad thing if people use incorrect spelling so long as they get their point across? It probably intimidates a lot of people and puts them off posting, as well as making them feel inferior. I'm all for helping people with their grammar if they want it, but not if they're only asking because they've been made to feel stupid. Which I'm not saying anyone purposefully does, but maybe this happens unintentionally.
