I feel tormented by this fanfic because I'm dying for them to get their revenge on Morag and for Martha and Jack to get together but at the same time the writing is so good and the characters so believable that I don't want it to end! Keep it coming.

Corey was surprised to find when he arrived at the Simpson Place the next morning that Mac was apparently alone:

“Hey, Mac. Where’s that good-for-nothing senior partner of mine? Sleeping whilst we slog I’d guess!” he giggled.

“Oh hey Corey, ok? Jack sent me a text saying he had to see Sergeant McCloud about something; he’ll be down later. Tony’s in the side yard giving that table the once-over so we can use it.”

“Right. Where should I start boss?” Corey asked.

“I was hoping you’d brave the cupboard under the stairs? Hopefully there’ll be some more useful stuff in there.”

Mac saw Corey’s face drop a panicked just a little; she would be busy with the making safe all day, Tony had enough to do and the LAST thing she wanted to do was expose Jack’s arachnophobia.

“Come on Corey mate; I’ll put in a good word for you with Tess Richards!” Mac coaxed.

“Jack’s a dead man!” Corey sighed, clearly giving in.

(Telling Jack that the pretty, new math teacher at the High School had caught his eye was meant to have been in confidence! But to be fair to Holden he, Jack, had warned Corey that he kept absolutely nothing from Martha and Corey had told him anyway.)

“Oh Corey, don’t be like that!” Mac wheedled. “I’ll make it a REALLY good word, I promise!”

“Alright, alright, I surrender; but Tess better think I’m ‘the best thing since sliced bread’ next time I see her!”

“She will mate, don’t worry!” Mac giggled.

Sighing over-dramatically, Corey gave Mac the promised radio and set to work.

Jack sat in the Diner and nervously nursed his coffee. He knew that assumptions would be made along with this request; they didn’t bother him for himself (after all, for him they’d be true), but Mac had enough to cope with without anyone teasing her. Still, Sergeant MacGrath was a good bloke; he’d understand.

The Sarg had been surprised to get Jack’s call but agreed to meet him for breakfast. Whatever young Holden wanted it had sure sounded serious. But then, Holden was a fairly serious bloke; unsurprisingly really, given Jack’s past. He’d like to see Jack forgive himself and lighten up a bit more; it’d make him a better officer, and if the Sarg was brutally honest, a nicer bloke. He sighed just a fraction and put a slightly glazed smile on his face and entered the Diner.

“Jack.”

Jack stood up, even though off duty, when his senior officer joined him in the booth:

“Sarg. Can we get another coffee over here Leah?”

“Coming right up.” Leah smiled

The two men made small talk for the couple of minutes until the coffee arrived & then the Sergeant spoke up:

“Ok Jack, what was important enough for you to want to see on a day off?”

“Not what Sarg, whom.” Jack answered, going on to explain as his boss sipped his coffee thoughtfully.
