CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

“Okay everyone nearly set?” Peter said, as he addressed the entire Yabbie creek police force who had assembled in the Station at the crack of dawn to continue their search.

“Where’s Holden?” he asked suddenly.

“Sarge sent him on another call,” PC Fitzgerald explained.

“Right.” Peter pursed his lips together angrily, “You all know what you’re doing so get going and I’ll meet you there.” The Police Officers moved off and Peter headed into the back office.

“Yes, Detective Baker?” Sergeant Bellmore asked from behind his desk.

“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t try to undermine my investigation,” Peter told him.

“Undermine your investigation? What does that mean exactly, Detective?”

“I mean sending Holden off elsewhere when you know full well I need him on this,” Peter replied.

“I’m in charge of this Station Detective Baker and we can’t ignore other crimes just because you’ve got a case on,” Sergeant Bellmore retorted.

“You know full well that you could have sent any officer on that call. You only took Holden because you know he’s a central part of my investigation,” Peter said angrily.

“That’s still my decision to make though Detective.”

“Head Office assigned me to deal with this case and use all available resources, that’s what all this is about isn’t it?” Peter demanded.

“And what would that be Detective Baker?”

“You feel your nose has been put out of joint because I’m running this investigation, not you,” Peter replied.

“Don’t be so ridiculous Detective. Now don’t you have a case to run?” Peter angrily stormed from the Station. The last two days had been hell. He was exhausted, Angel wasn’t speaking to him, things between him and Leah were a mess, they still hadn’t found Selina and Tasha and now he was going to war with his Sergeant. Peter shook his head as he got in his car. What he desperately needed was somebody to talk to, somebody who understood. Truth was he had missed Angel’s company something awful in the past twenty-four hours. He had come to rely on her and having her angry with him made him feel incredibly lonely and isolated. He put his foot down on the accelerator and resolved to do whatever it took to make things up with Angel.

The teams had been searching for two hours before Peter got a chance to speak to her.

“Alf, Peter, would you like a coffee?” Angel offered.

“Love one thanks,” Peter called back.

“No thanks love,” Alf replied. Angel poured out the coffee and headed in Peter’s direction to give it to him. Peter met her half way, taking his chance to speak to her.

“Thanks. Listen Angel can I talk to you?” he asked.

“Yeah, I want to talk to you too. I owe you an apology,” Angel offered.

“You don’t, I was going to apologise to you. I shouldn’t have let you down like that, I’m sorry. The other case is important but I should have kept my phone on,” Peter replied.

“No it’s me who should be sorry. I really blew up at you yesterday and it was out of order. I’m sorry,” Angel told him.

“You’re just worried about Selina, it’s okay,” Peter replied.

“No it’s not. I am worried about Sel but I was being over-sensitive. When my marriage to Simon started drifting apart it was the lies that I noticed first. I’d catch him out on little things that he’d lie about or he’d let me down. I guess you’re the first person I’ve really trusted in a while and it just felt like déjà vu yesterday. I couldn’t help thinking that our friendship was going to go the same way as my marriage so I over-reacted. I’m sorry,” Angel explained.

“It’s okay,” Peter assured her, “I understand. I did promise you I’d prioritise this and I am. It was just that something important came up that I had to deal with but I promise I’m focused on finding Selina. We’ll find her, she was here yesterday Angel. She was spotted leaving the camp with Joey, on foot, in the direction of the bush. So unless they had some form of transport hidden away she’s somewhere in the bush so we’re going to find her, okay?”

“Yeah,” Angel replied, smiling at him.

“Come here.” Peter pulled her into a hug and held her tightly, “I’m glad we’ve made up, there’s so much I need to talk to you about. How about the minute we find Selina I’ll treat you to a slap up dinner? The one we missed out on last time,” Peter suggested.

“Yeah that sounds good, there’s stuff I could do with talking to you about too,” Angel replied.

“We’ll sort it later than.” Peter kissed her cheek lightly and Angel headed back to where Pippa stood with a newly arrived Leah and Colleen.

“Hey,” Angel greeted them.

“Hello dear,” Colleen replied with a knowing smile as Leah merely glared.

“Where’s Irene?” Leah demanded.

“She’s gone out with one of the teams,” Angel replied.

“Is that wise?” Leah asked.

“She wouldn’t settle and Alf and Peter thought it was okay,” Angel explained.

“Well Peter would think it was okay if it was your suggestion,” Leah sniped.

“What is that supposed to mean? Irene wanted to go out, it had nothing to do with me. Peter and I are friends but I have no say in what he says or does. I suggest if you have a problem with a decision he’s made that you take it up with him,” Angel retorted.

“Maybe I will. After all Peter is family,” Leah replied glaring at Angel.

“Yes I forgot, how is Dan, you know, your husband?” she asked pointedly and Leah looked at her strangely. Angel remembered with a start that she was not meant to know about what had happened between Peter and Leah and felt guilty that she had said too much. Fortunately Colleen came over and started chatting to Leah but Angel got the distinct impression that Leah had not quite finished with her yet.

“I can’t believe Serge has got me doing this while the search is going on,” Jack remarked to PC Hale, the officer with him.

“Does seem a bit harsh,” PC Hale replied.

“The old man who reported it isn’t even sure it is a dead body,” Jack remarked angrily.

“It certainly looked like one from up there. We’ll soon know anyway,” PC Hale replied as he and Jack made their way across the rocky land at the base of the cliff. On reaching their target PC Hale leant down over the lifeless, human form and felt for a pulse.

“He’s dead alright,” he announced.

“Damn, just what we need. Turn him over, lets see if there’s any ID on him,” Jack replied. PC Hale began going through the dead man’s pockets as Jack phoned for an ambulance to collect the body. “The ambulance is on his way. It looks pretty clear that he’s broken his neck on impact though.” Jack motioned towards the angle at which the dead man’s head lay.

“Look at this Jack,” PC Hale called his partner over, “are you thinking what I’m thinking?” he asked.

“A black eye. Looks like somebody’s hit him. We’ll have to wait on the coroner’s verdict but depending on when he received that punch…it’s possible this wasn’t an accident,” Jack replied.

“Murder?” PC Hale inquired.

“Or manslaughter, a fight that went wrong? Whatever it is, somebody certainly didn’t report it. This is the last thing we need right now, you realise that re-joining the search is out of the question until we know if he fell, jumped or was pushed?” Jack remarked.

“Yeah I know. Here you go, his wallet’s here. He was a Doctor,” PC Hale replied.

“Doctor? What’s his name?” Jack asked.

“Doctor Helpman,” PC Hale supplied.

“Helpman?”

“Yeah, do you know him?”

“He was a Doctor at Northern Districts Hospital. Pretty high up, as far as I know,” Jack replied.

“Wonderful,” PC Hale remarked, dryly. “Guess we better phone it in then.”

“Guess so.” Passing PC Hale the wallet Jack took his radio from his pocket to contact the Station.

Selina yawned, stretched and sat up. Looking around her she had no idea where she was but then it came back to her. The camp, that woman, Joey. Selina looked desperately around her but Joey was nowhere to be seen. How long had she been asleep? Where could he have gone to? She crawled to the edge of the tree house and looked down but there was nobody in sight. Below she could hear voices and people moving around but the voices definitely did not belong to Joey and Selina felt scared. What if it was that woman, what if Joey was bringing her to find her? The voices trailed off, but Selina knew that the danger was not over. If she stayed in the tree house the woman would come for her, she just knew it. Gingerly she made her way to the edge of the tree and attempted to ease herself down, but the task was more difficult than getting up had been. She felt better now, less tired and disorientated than she had then, but the fear about harming her baby was still ever prevalent in her mind as she slowly and awkwardly made her way down the tree. Finally, after a difficult descent she felt her feet touch the ground and she leaned against the tree and took a deep breath.

“Selina.” The voice was barely more than a whisper but Selina turned to see the brown haired woman watching her.

“No!” she screamed but the woman was moving towards her now, syringe in hand and Selina’s body felt frozen to the spot. The woman’s eyes were flashing dangerously, her expression could only be described as maniacal and Selina was terrified. The woman was within an inch of her know, she could feel her hot breath on her neck as she grabbed her arm and held it out preparing to administer the contents of the needle. What it was, Selina could not say but at that point Selina’s will to live kicked in and she punched desperately at her attacker. They were rolling around the floor, fighting against each other, the needle still perilously close to Selina’s skin. Then suddenly the woman’s weight was lifted from her and Selina breathed a sigh of relief as she looked up to see that someone else had resumed her fight with the woman. Selina watched as Joey pinned the woman down, holding her arms back so that she could not administer the needle but the woman was strong and soon she was back on top again. Selina watched, horrified as Joey regained control of her, he was rocking dangerously now.

“Run! Run! Run! Help! Danger! Run!” Joey screamed but Selina did not want to leave him. Joey had freed himself from the woman’s grip and stood between her and Selina muttering to himself as the woman rounded furiously towards them. She had a large, heavy plank of wood in one hand and the needle in another but Joey threw himself at her, resuming his fight. Selina could do nothing but watch as plank of wood was bought down heavily on Joey’s head and he fell to the ground, taking the woman with him. There was blood everywhere. Selina looked on horrified as the woman struggled to free herself. With a start Selina realised that it was too late to help Joey and with nobody to protect her, the woman would be able to get her. With a last desperate look at Joey’s lifeless form Selina took off into the bush. Behind her she could hear footsteps. The woman was on her tail but she simply ran faster, growing more and more disorientated, through acres of bushland. Selina could hear footsteps all around her and voices, she could sense the woman drawing close to her, she looked desperately over her shoulder and then felt her body connect with something; another human. Selina screamed.

CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT

“Hey, hey, it’s okay. Selina everything’s okay,” a soft voice soothed as Selina found herself looking up at the concerned face of Kane Philips.

“Kane?” she asked, still not quite convinced it was real.

“Yes. Guys I’ve found her, Selina’s here!” Kane called to the group. It only took a matter of seconds for Stephen to race through the trees and collect his wife in his arms. Only then did Selina burst into tears. Stephen cried too, as he held her and the Officer with them radioed in that they had found her. Selina spent a few minutes in Stephen’s arms, drawing comfort from the protective feeling of being with him but then she remembered Joey.

“Joey…” she began.

“I know Sel, Peter figured out that Joey was behind this,” Stephen told her.

“No we have to help him, he’s unconscious,” Selina replied.

“Good, I hope he stays like that,” Stephen told her angrily.

“No, you don’t get it." Selina pleaded "It wasn’t Joey’s fault, he was being brainwashed. We have to help him!” Selina protested.

“After what he’s put us through?” Stephen was incredulous.

“You don’t understand, you have to help him!” Selina broke free of Stephen’s arms and headed off in the direction she had come from.

“Sel! Selina! Wait up! Selina!” Stephen followed her as she stomped furiously through the bush, but his every attempt to touch her was shrugged angrily aside. Selina carried on her helpless march through the bush with the whole rescue team behind her, but she could not seem to find her way back to the spot where Joey had fallen.

“He’s here somewhere, I know he is!” Selina protested.

“Who is?” Kane demanded, having caught up with them.

“Joey, apparently he’s injured and we should care,” Stephen told him bitterly.

“You don’t understand! He tried to save me and he’s injured, we have to help him,” Selina explained.

“Maybe we can look for him then while you stop here and let the Doctor look at you,” Kane suggested.

“Joey’s more injured than me, you have to find him!” Selina protested.

“Well if you let Rachel take a look at you, Stephen can stay with you while Barry, Kim and I search round here for Joey,” Kane told her.

“Really?”

“Yes really,” Kane confirmed. Barry squeezed Selina’s shoulder reassuringly.

“We’ll find him Selina, you stay with Rachel and make sure you and your baby are okay,” Barry soothed as Selina nodded.

“You have to look after him, Joey never hurt me. He tried to help but, you also have to be careful because she’s out there somewhere,” Selina explained.

“Who? Do you mean Tasha?” Kim asked.

“No her. The woman who’s behind this. She’s dangerous, she wants to kill Joey and I, so be careful,” Selina warned.

“Okay Selina, we’ll be careful,” Kim promised. He, Kane and Barry moved off and Rachel eased Selina into a seated position to check her over.

“They’ve got her! They’ve found Selina!” Peter announced to the waiting crowd at the camping area which included Angel, Pippa, Leah, Colleen, Sally, Kirsty, Beth and Robbie, Irene, Josie and Martha who had returned with their search team to get refreshment. Irene and Angel both burst into tears and hugged each other, they were both so relieved to know that Selina was safe.

“Any news on Tasha?” Josie demanded.

“No Josie, I’m sorry. Hopefully now we have Selina back she’ll be able to tell us more about where Tasha’s being held,” Peter explained. Josie nodded reluctantly and headed over to where Robbie was being comforted by Beth.

“Oh what good news!” Colleen enthused.

“Yes it’s wonderful,” Leah added.

“Of course she might not be okay yet, I mean she’s been out here days and lord only knows what that loony will have done to her,” Colleen remarked.

“For once in your life will you shut your beak woman!” Irene rounded on her furiously.

“What does the Doctor say?” Angel asked the approaching Peter.

“She say’s she’s tired, dehydrated and she’ll have to go to hospital before they’ll know if the baby’s been harmed, but up to now everything seems okay,” Peter replied.

“Thank you,” Angel whispered.

“It’s okay,” Peter mouthed reassuringly at Angel who threw herself into his arms. Peter picked her up and spun her around, “I told you I’d find her,” he remarked.

“I know and I promise I’ll never doubt you again,” Angel replied as he returned her feet to the ground.

“I’ll remind you of that,” Peter teased, pulling her back into a stronger hug and ignoring the amused glances of Irene, Pippa and Colleen and the strange look on Leah’s face. Martha smiled sadly as she watched them and headed over to join Robbie, Beth and Josie.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m really pleased Selina’s been found safe and well but, Tasha’s still missing,” Martha remarked, seating herself beside Robbie.

“I know but like Peter said, Selina’s our best hope of finding Tasha,” Beth reassured.

“I think we have to face the reality that Tasha’s gone,” Robbie announced coldly to the horror of the three women.

“Don’t say that!” Beth scolded.

“It’s true though. Peter said that it wasn’t Tasha they were after, they just used her to get to Selina. So the minute they had Selina they’ll just have disposed of Tasha. It makes sense,” Robbie explained.

“Don’t you dare say that!” Josie delivered a resounding smack onto Robbie’s cheek.

“Hey!” Beth was on her feet angrily defending her son.

“I’m so sorry Robbie, I didn’t mean that!” Josie apologised instantly.

“It’s okay, you’re just worried. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said all that. Tasha’s going to be fine,” Robbie insisted but deep down he knew it was more for their benefit than for his own; he really did not see how Tasha could possibly still be alive.

“This is madness Kane, we can’t keep on looking. There’s obviously no-one here,” Dan remarked. They had been searching for Joey for nearly an hour and the other team had joined them to help. Stephen and Barry had taken Selina back to the search point and Dan, Tony, Sutty and Rachel had joined Kane and Kim in the search for Joey.

“Kane, we’re going round in circles,” Dan continued.

“She was so certain that Joey was here and needing our help,” Kane replied.

“I know, but she’s obviously been through one hell of an ordeal, do you not think maybe she was confused?” Dan suggested, looking to Rachel for confirmation.

“It’s possible. She’s been heavily drugged and she’s exhausted and dehydrated. All those things could have affected her mental state,” Rachel replied.

“You heard her though Rachel, she was convinced,” Kane insisted.

“Yeah she was. I hear what you’re saying but I see Dan’s point too. Why don’t you radio in to Alf or Peter? They might have been able to get more information out of her,” Kim suggested.

“Yeah okay,” Kane agreed.

“Guys, over here!” Tony called from the area of bushland he was searching in. The other four raced to where he was frantically pulling weeds and bush away.

“What is it?” Kane demanded.

“It’s a person,” Tony replied.

“We’ve been through this area three times though!” Dan reminded.

“I know but he’s pretty well hidden, somebody’s obviously made a good attempt at ensuring he was never found,” Tony remarked.

“Is it Joey?” Kane demanded as the men frantically pulled at the undergrowth covering the lifeless form.

“Certainly matches the description,” Tony remarked.

“Is he alive?” Rachel asked.

“I really don’t know,” Tony replied.

“That’s most of the undergrowth out of the way. Maybe you best check him over before we move him Rach,” Dan suggested.

“Sure.” Rachel knelt down in the position Tony had been in seconds before and began feeling for a pulse.

“Well?” Kane demanded.

“He’s alive, but barely. He has a really nasty wound on the back of his head and he’s lost a lot of blood. We need to get him to hospital immediately,” Rachel replied.

“Is he okay to be moved then?”

“Yeah I can’t see any sign of a neck injury but there’s no time to be sure. He needs help now, somebody’s made a really good attempt at killing him,” Rachel explained.

“And hiding him. It’s a good job you went off the track Tony or we’d never have found him,” Sutty remarked.

“Selina was right then, there is someone else involved. A woman did she say?” Kane mused.

“Come on guys, theories have to wait. He needs help now,” Rachel urged.

“Come on then, if we pick him up in a Queens chair type thing we should be able to carry him and you can support his head Rach,” Sutty suggested.

“Okay,” Rachel agreed as the four men got into position.

“That is Joey,” Kane confirmed on seeing his face.

“Then we need to get moving. Come on guys, before it’s too late to help him,” Rachel suggested and the four men set to work but as they looked upon Joey’s lifeless form none of them held out much hope.

“Selina girl, good to see you!” Alf was the first to notice the girl being carried in her exhausted husband’s arms with support from Barry. Stephen sat her down on the chair that Alf had been sitting in moment’s previously as Barry handed her a bottle of water, which she gulped down gratefully. A crowd of people headed by Irene and Angel were heading towards her and within minutes Selina was sobbing Irene’s arms.

“Come on Irene, let someone else get a look in,” Angel protested and a smiling Irene stepped aside to let Angel have a hug.

“It’s so good to see you,” Selina told her.

“You’re telling me!” Angel replied, “I’m so glad you’re safe.”

“Selina I’m sorry to bother you I know you’ve been through a lot, but is it possible you could tell us where Tasha is? I’m her Aunt,” Josie asked.

“Give the poor girl a minute woman!” Irene protested.

“No it’s okay. Tasha and I were drugged at the same time and when I came round Tasha was there but unconscious from the drugs. Then they gave me some more and by the time I came round she had gone. I don’t know where they took her, I’m sorry,” Selina explained.

“I told you. She’s dead,” Robbie muttered as a horrified Josie began to cry, her hand clamped over her mouth.

“No, I don’t think she’s dead,” Selina added.

“What?” Josie looked at Selina expectantly.

“I don’t think they were planning to kill her. They said Mamma Rose had business with her,” Selina explained.

“So she’s probably still alive then?” Josie asked to nobody in particular.

“We need to step up our search for Mamma Rose and Jonah Mitchell. It appears Tasha is in their company,” Peter was telling Sergeant Bellmore down the phone.

“Thank you,” Josie told Selina as she, Robbie and Martha moved away from Selina.

“Right I’ve got people looking for Mamma Rose and Jonah,” Peter explained.

“I really hope we find her,” Selina remarked.

“Me too,” Peter replied, moving closer to where Selina sat. “Look I know this is hard, you’ve been through a lot, but I really need to know what you know. Anything at all you can remember about what happened.”

“Can’t this wait?” Irene demanded.

“No Irene I’m sorry, it can’t. We need to find Tasha and Selina’s the only person who can help,” Peter explained.

“Come on Irene, Peter’s only doing his job,” Angel urged as they moved away, leaving only Stephen at her side and PC Fitzgerald who had her notepad in her hand.

“So you think they weren’t planning to harm Tasha?” Peter asked.

“No I said they weren’t planning to kill her. I didn’t want to upset her family but they were calling her the chosen one, they wanted her to have a baby,” Selina explained. Peter looked at her confused, “They were planning to rape her,” Selina spelt it out.

“****, PC Fitzgerald will you report that information immediately,” Peter instructed.

“On to it Sir.”

“So you were at the Believer’s camp when you were drugged?” Peter asked.

“Yes. It was in our drinks, I think. At least that’s my last memory. When I woke up Joey was there and it was pretty clear that his schizophrenia was back. At first I thought he was behind it all and I didn’t really understand why but then she explained it all,” Selina remarked.

“She?” Peter asked.

“Yeah I only saw her the once, yesterday it was, I think. It’s all so confusing,” Selina explained.

“Just try your best,” Peter urged. “What exactly did she say to you?”

“Lots of stuff. She was Saul’s daughter, adopted out and she wanted revenge for his death. She found out about Joey’s schizophrenia and she tipped him back over the edge, got him onside. He didn’t know what he was doing, you can’t blame him for anything, it was all her. She killed Teri Garner. She reckoned she’d left no traces but she told Joey who didn’t believe her so he went to check and left all sorts of DNA at the scene. She was pleased about that, she wanted Joey to go down for the murder. But he didn’t do it, I heard her admit to it,” Selina insisted.

“Okay, why did they use Tasha, Selina?” Peter asked.

“To get me. She thought that if Irene’s new golden girl was in the clutches of a cult that Irene would be bound to bring me over to talk her round. Stupidly I did exactly that, Irene had nothing to do with it,” Selina explained.

“So they planned to kill you?” Peter asked to which Selina nodded. Peter looked over his shoulder to where Lara was still on the phone and then pulled the Driver’s license out of his pocket. “Is this the woman?” he asked.

“Oh my God! Yes!” Selina confirmed, “Do you know who she is then?”

“You could say that,” Peter replied.

“She looks okay, doesn’t she?” Irene demanded of Angel.

“Yes she looks good, considering,” Angel replied, Irene nodded.

“Um Irene?” Barry asked.

“I just can’t believe we’ve got her back. What that poor girlie must have been through,” Irene remarked.

“She’s safe now though,” Pippa soothed.

“It’s all my fault though. I convinced her to come back to England,” Irene remarked.

“Irene?” Barry asked.

“You can blame me as much for that Irene, if I hadn’t have told her I was coming back…I think Barry wants a word,” Angel told her.

“What?” Irene asked distracted, “Does Peter really have to interview her now? The poor girl must be exhausted.”

“He just wants to find Tasha, and I suppose she might forget if they leave her,” Pippa replied.

“Yeah I guess so. I just feel so sorry for her, poor girlie. I hope that baby’s okay. After what her and Stephen have been through they deserve this baby,” Irene remarked.

“Irene could I speak to you please?” Barry asked.

“Just a sec love. Look Josie I’m sorry I snapped at you before. I’m worried about Tasha too,” Irene explained.

“I know and I’m glad Selina’s safe,” Josie replied.

“Yeah I know I….” Irene began.

“Irene please?” Barry interrupted.

“I’m so relieved to have her back. We’re going to get Tasha back too, I can just feel it,” Irene told Josie giving her a brief hug.

“Thanks Irene. Um, I think Barry wants a word,” Josie told her, looking past Irene who spun round angrily.

“What do you want you great…” she stopped dead at the sight of Barry kneeling on the ground. “What are you doing down there you big lummox?” Irene demanded.

“Something I’ve been trying to do for the past half an hour. I’ve wanted to ask you for ages, but I promised myself I’d wait until one of the girls was safe and now Selina’s back…” Barry began.

“Well get up then you big oaf and tell me what in the balzes you’re going on about?” Irene demanded.

“Will you just shut up for one minute so I can ask you to marry me?” Barry snapped.

“What?” Irene was stunned.

“Irene Roberts, I love you and I would like you to be my wife. Will you marry me?” Barry asked, brandishing an open box in which sat a beautiful ring. Irene looked at him speechless. “Well?” Barry asked nervously.

“Of course I will, you great dill!” she replied, her face breaking out in a grin and Barry stood up and took her in his arms. The two kissed soundly as everyone around them cheered them on.
