The people who are your 'Mutual Friends' list have added you to their friends' list as well. The ones who aren't on it haven't added you back.

Thanks Barbara 'Mutual friends' seems a bit pointless: either people are friends or they aren't, not half and half with person A adding person B but person B not adding person A
