Mez83 Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Good evening girls!! Herbal medicines are great for some things. I take herbal medicine to calm me down around exam time when I'm totally stressed out. It works for me, but not others. So I guess it just depends on the person and what it's being used for. My lips are all cracked. I can't find my lip balm.
MarMar Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I went to see a homeopath (sp?What's it called in English) when I was 6, and what they do is that they give you "medicine" which contains the things you are allergic to, eg. building up the immune system so that it won't attacj things (pollen etc) which is not dangerous to you, but the immune system fights it anyway. Not sure about asthma etc but it could be worth checking out.
Pierced Musie Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I think alternative medicine is great. It cured my allergies. Helps my depression a hell of a lot more than anti-depressants did =)
Elise Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I'm skeptical, don't know why, but I think, and this is strictly my opinion only, that they are just a bundh of hippy propaganda. But having said that, I haven't tried it, but somehow the placebo effect suddenly comes into my mind.
MarMar Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I wondery how it can be placebo effect when it's proved to help - by making the immune system used to pollen (and other allergens(sp?) so that it doesn't attack them. I am more sceptical of "normal" medicine. I am/was allergic to my cats, and the doctor said we would have to kill them/give them away. I started on alterinative medicine, and I still have my cats.. 14 years later.
Mez83 Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Hello Young Dan! My mum went to a homeopath and got the same thing done as Mar did. She went to someone else who found out what she was allergic to by taking her pulse or something. I'm not 100% sure about that one now that I think about it. My brain isn't working properly. So tired.....So full of chocolate mud cake and nachoes..... I wondery how it can be placebo effect when it's proved to help - by making the immune system used to pollen (and other allergens(sp?) so that it doesn't attack them. I am more sceptical of "normal" medicine. I am/was allergic to my cats, and the doctor said we would have to kill them/give them away. I started on alterinative medicine, and I still have my cats.. 14 years later. It scares me how often Doctors are wrong.....
Elise Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Placebo effect works when the mind tries to convince the body that whatever medicine that is given to them is working, so if someone believes strongly that this may be the thing to cure them of whatever, then it may happen with the help of the person convincing them that it will work. Don't know if that makes sense but anyway. But I am certianly not saying I don't believe you, it's just my mere opinion. I think doing psychology in year 12 is to blame....
~Lynd~ Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I think it would wurk for allergies and depression,i've herd it works well for those thing, but i don't have any allergies and i'm not really majorly depressed, only sometimes,so theres that for me....Don't some things involve sticking needles in you?I have a massive needle phobia!
Elise Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 ^ Oooh me too! I hate those damn things! I would rather get the flu than have a flu shot!!! And forget about testing me for my blood sugar levels!

I don't see how there can be more instances of the placebo effect in alternative medicine than it is in the more triditional... If that's what you are trying to say (I'm skeptical, don't know why, but I think, and this is strictly my opinion only, that they are just a bundh of hippy propaganda.
