MarMar Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 I know some of you think I should go see a doctor about my depression, but I am too nervous and scared to do that. Frankie recommended something called 5HTP, and I've been trying to read up on it. It seems to help with insomnia, anxiety, depression, migraine, all of which I suffer from. What I need to know is if it should not be used with birth control pills. Does anyone know? I have had people recommending St. John's Worth, but it is a known side effect that St. John's Worth reduce the effect of the birth control pills, and... I don't want that, a you can imagine.
Annette Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 I've done a little research, and I found the following on an NHS website Does 5HTP interact with the oral contraceptive pill at all? 27/Mar/06 Answer: We searched Medline, Google and Google Scholar and could find no articles describing an interaction or stating that this was a safe combination. So basically, no-one appears to know. It is likely that no evidence or trials exist where the two have been used together. I am currently training to become a pharmacist, and we have had lectures about dietary supplements and herbal medicines. The trouble with supplements is that because they haven't been tested to the extent that conventional medicines have been, often the evidence that they work is poor, and any possible interactions or side effects are unknown. Also the quality of the products can be very variable, because the quality standards required for dietary supplements are much lower than licensed medication. I personally would recommend that you go and see your doctor, I know you said you are scared, but I am sure they will be very understanding, and will have seen plenty of people with the same problem. If you do chose to use a supplement, the most important thing is that you buy one from a reputable manufacturer, preferably with a Product License (or whatever the Norweigan equivalent is) so that it will be of good quality. You should also stick to the same brand, because different brands can contain different levels of active ingredient.
