Emmadolly Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Bonjour girlies! Sorry I haven't been on much for a while, I'm on holiday in n. Wales at the moment and I seriously think I'm getting BttB withdrawal symptoms, I was getting scarily obsessive in my hunt for a computer with internet access here! Anyways, I'll be back at the weekend!! (But it's scary how much stuff I've missed out on, so many pages of unread threads! LOL ) Speak to you all very soon! XxXx Hope you have a fab time in Wales. The weather is going to be lovley tomorrow, so you will see it at it's best.
katya Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Merc, is that a natural remedy? Cos I really don't think you should take something if the only info you have on it is from the net, or even from a medical book. Can't you go to the doctor and ask about 5HTP without mentioning your depression? Just say you'd like to know some information about it. Or even a pharmacist?

You should talk to your Dr if you are having these conditions, there is no sodding shame/embaressment in it at all. They are there to help you as a person and not to judge you, if you leave this to continue, you will not see the beniefit from it.
katya Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 I had to go see the doc when I was about 15 cos I was terrified about getting mad cow disease. It totally screwed with my head for a while, and I was way too embarrassed to go to the doctors, but eventually my mum forced me and after that one visit everything just fell into perspective. I'm not saying you'll feel better after one visit, but it might help. This post will be so ironic if I end up with mad cow disease.
MarMar Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 I think it's basically about the same thing as we have here in Norway which is selling a lot these days, extract from the plant which is called Rhodiola rosea in Latin... I don't think I could get 5HTP in Norway, and I would not buy it over the internet. I guess I could go to a pharmacy and see what they say. I think they even might sell Rhodiola rosea-extract...
Annette Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 I'm not sure that it is the same thing. 5HTP is a precursor of a substance found in the brain called 5HT (or serotonin). It is thought that increasing the levels helps people with depression. However the herbal remedy you mention is thought to have a range of effects and to increase other chemicals in the brain as well as 5HT. For the herbal remedy, there doesn't appear to be much evidence or trials about whether it works in depression, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't help. Going to speak to a pharmacist would be a good idea, because they should be able to give you advice about whether it would work for you and if it might interact with the pill.
MarMar Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 I have read a bit about this Rhodiola rosea-extract before, and I think I found out that, in contrast to St.John's worth, is has no effect of the pills..
katya Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Well, just be careful, you don't want any little Merc's running around right now :-).

The weather is going to be lovley tomorrow, so you will see it at it's best. I'm in Nefyn, which is a little random town on the Llyn Penisula in n. Wales, and for some unbeknown reason the weather is always loads better here than at home in Stoke. It's glorious, I actually donned my bikini on the beach yesterday for the first time since last summer, and I started to get a tan! Yayay! It's amazing what the sun can do to my mood, even if I do have a mountain of revision waiting for me....oh well!
