Maybe you should get a second opinion if you're concerned about it.As Jess said they can get addictive which than leads to another problem altogether or they can make the original problem worse or not do anything at all becourse the real reason is being ignored...Than again they might help so maybe a short trial period would be worth it and see how you go.

I advise you to go back to the doctor and get a proper diagnosis - did he tell you he thought you were clinically depressed? If you don’t mind saying on the board, what are your symptoms?

A few years ago my friend went to the doctor's because she had been feeling a bit depressed for no reason. I went with her and waited in the reception area. She was literally in for about five minutes and came out with a prescription for anti-depressants. I think some doctors just prescribe them because they see it as a quick fix. My friend took them for a while and then came off them because she couldn't handle the side-effects, went to a different doctor and discovered the depression was a side-effect of her pill. She then changed pills and hasn't looked back.

If a doctor prescribes you with anti-depressants without talking to you properly about your symptoms and referring you to some sort of counsellor then I'd take his advice with a pinch of salt. Depression isn't a physical problem, you can't just take pills for a set amount of time and be 'cured'. Liz, I don't know what it is that's making you feel this way but there's likely to be an underlying cause, and the best way to find out what that is (assuming you don't feel better anytime soon) is to speak to someone professionally.

People can be clinically depressed without having anything which they feel sad or upset about... that is why docotrs prescribe antidepressents in these circumstances. Depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and the medication can help correct that balnce. It is therefor very unwise and irresponsible for anyone to suggest that you dont take them just because they think antidepresents are bad for you. If I were you Liz I would take them, but make an apointment to see your GP again soon to discuss this to make sure you understand what is happening. They may take a week or two to kick in. Whilst the old style antidepresents were addictive most of the new ones aren't and there is still a lot of myth surrounding th subject. You may find you feel better, are able to stop crying and can sleep better as well if you take them. Your doctor is medically qualified...knows you and knows why he prescribed them ...none of use here know..and it would be irresponsible of us to pretend that we know better.

I took some as well. They helped a little bit, but not for that long. Anyhow I try to avoid tablets, the only tablets I take are Ibprupine(sp?) for headaches and the pill.

I sometimes just get depressed about nothing in particular. My old comp claimed that I was clinicly depressed and my gp just laughed. I do go to clinics, but that's for another reason. I'm meant to be having genetic counciling but they don't have anything like that here(not that I've heard of) so I've been stuck going to self esteem groups, which have helped me socially. Maybe you want to talk to your gp again and see if there is a self esteem group or a counciler person near by that he can refere you to.

Depression CAN be a physical problem...see my earlier post...depression can a whole host of physcial causes....there may be emotional reasons why people ebcome depressed but it is worng to say that theese are the only causes...depression can be CURED if it has a physical cause.
