claire_louise Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I went to the doctor to get prescribed medication (the pill + pain killing tablets that are really effective) it's the only thing that ever helped me. xxx They gave you painkillers as well as the pill? My doctor gave the impression that it was either/or. Anyway, *belle*, the pill is effective for most people in easing the pain (in my own experience, the pains don't go away, but they are much more manageable). There are also prescribed painkillers that your gp can give you, but these may have side effects (maybe Clare can tell you a bit more about that if she's taken them?). If you want something non-prescribed, Feminax tablets are very good and you can get them from most chemists.
MarMar Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 There might be a medical reason for th painkillers. I'm not the pill and I an still in excruciating pain every month.
Guevara01 Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 In my case the pain killing tablets aren't to be used regularly, they're just for when i can't cope just on the pill, and they really help. I used to have a combination of painkillers, but it was such a hassle, now i've found some that really work for me. This is what i take: Mefenamic acid is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Mefenamic acid works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. • Mefenamic acid is used to reduce pain caused by various conditions including menstruation. • Mefenamic acid may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. There are some side effects listed, but i haven't experienced any of them. They're generally only for short term use though, which is why i only take them as and when, and why i still have to have the pill. Hope it helps, i think it's just the case of finding something that works for you though Belle, i had to go through a lot of trial runs with medication before i found the way that suited me (trial runs sort of screwed me up though lol i wouldn't recommend that part) xxx
Frankie Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 If your periods have usually been OK ...but you have recently started getting heavy painful ones then there could be a medical reason..and it could very easily be treatable...so I think see your GP is the best advice...its a bit of a myth that women have to put up with heavy periods...its not a foregone conclusion...and is treatebale more often than not.
Guevara01 Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I saw this thing tonight on TV about how much blood women lose during their period. Oh, sorry "average" women. Bloody hell. I must be nowhere near average and other women must be so lucky. It was like this tiny, tiny amount. Grrrrrrrrrrrr xxx
katya Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Clare I really like your signature. It's sad but relevant.
Guevara01 Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Thanks Katya, it was at the beginning of a book i read. It just seems that everytime i see the news or read the paper lately, i'm reminded of what a backwards world we live in. It astonded me that this guy was writing about the problems we face today, over 400 years ago. xxx
katya Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I agree, it's really quite depressing. We think we live in incredibly enlightened times, and in some ways we do, but there are situations that beggar belief.
Guevara01 Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I think it's fuelled by the government as well. I mean obviously not all the blame can be laid on them, but what with going overboard with all this "PC" and "multi-cultural" all they're doing is making divisions worse IMO. xxx
