^^ I agree to a certain extent. But i get what TabbyCool was saying too. I mean i don't celebrate other religious holidays because i'm not part of that religion, i still acknowledge them as being important though of couse. I also think you should respect the values of the country you're in and if people don't i think this is where a lot of immigration/religious sprung hatred comes from. I mean if i went to a country where it was illegal to drink any alcohol, i wouldn't drink alcohol. I wouldn't just go around saying "Well, i'm English and this is part of my culture". I'm probably not explaining myself very well. But i do think that people who celebrate Christmas/Easter and are not Christians should be aware (and respectful) of the fact that they are still Christian holidays. (The same goes with every other religion of course)

Religion's obviously not as dead as certain facets of the media make it out to be! :P

What I find weird is that so many of us actually celebrate Christmas at all! How many of us are actually Christian. I wonder? I'm not, yet I celebrate Christmas. I don't think Jehovah's Witnesses should celebrate a festival from a different religion because it's not something they believe in! Most of us are complete hypocrites when it comes to things like Christmas and Easter, we don't believe in God or Jesus, but we still celebrate the birth and death of Christ, what's that all about? Maybe next year I'll celebrate Ramadan or something, it might be a bit of a change and no less hypocritical than celebrating Christmas.

Umm.. since when was Yule a Christian holiday? Ok, so it has been for the last 2000 years (give or take a few), but what about all the years before that? What about Ostara? Samhain? And all the other holidays they have stolen?

That's fair enough Mar, I know Christmas was basically "stolen" from other festivals (wasn't it a Roman festival at one point?), but my point is that half the people who celebrate it aren't celebrating Christmas or even any of the other festivals that Christmas may have replaced, they are just celebrating a day when they get presents and Christmas dinner and don't have to go to work. I mean, I do it too, I don't believe in God or Jesus or anything, I'm not religious in the slightest bit, for me, Christmas is a pain because I have to spend hours trudging around the shops trying to buy pointless crap that nobody wants anyway. I like the fact that we get a couple of free days off work, but I don't really like the fuss about presents and stuff, everyone spends a lot of money and people still don't get stuff they actually want, it would be far better if we just celebrated by going out on a shopping spree and buying stuff for ourselves!

It's not the fact that people celebrate and stuff that bothers me, it's the fact that they say they're celebrating Christmas when they are doing nothing of the sort!

Charlie walks into his bedroom with a sheep under his arm and says:

'Darling, this is the pig I have sex with when you have a headache.'

His girlfriend is lying in bed and replies: 'I think you'll find that's a sheep, you idiot.'

The man says: 'I think you'll find I wasn't talking to you.'

Going back to the Christmas thing... As Mar rightly points out, Christmas has been a non-Christian holiday in the past...BUT, the present incarnation of it is as a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus, and that is what most people (in the UK, at least) take it to be. We sing religious (ish) carols and exchange Nativity scene Christmas cards, etc, and if you asked people in the street what Christmas is about, they'd say the birth of Jesus, rather than some pagan or non-Christian holiday (although they'd probably, overall, be more concerned about presents). So like TabbyCool said, how many non-Muslims celebrate Id-Al-Fitr, or whatever it is, or how many non-Jewish people celebrate Hannukah? So why should Christianity be any different?

In my experience, Christianity has always been the "exception" to the rule...people still take God's name in vain, how many people do you hear saying, for example, "Oh my Allah?" And Christianity tends to be mocked a fair bit - "Jerry Springer: The Opera" was a prime example of this. Yet there was a play at a theatre in Birmingham that offended the Sikh populatiion and it was taken out of production there. I dunno, this is just a rant, I've always wondered why everyone celebrates Christmas...it's weird. I'm all for integration of other cultures and stuff, but I think I'd get some strange responses if I started fasting because of Ramadan...

Rant over. :)

It's all double standards and political correctness gone mad. If we went to a predominantly muslim country we'd have to respect their culture (for example, by taking your shoes off when you go into religious buildings and by covering up your arms and legs). But muslim women in this country refuse to take their veils off, despite the fact that British women don't wear them. The woman who was sacked for teaching with a veil on didn't wear the veil to her job interview, even though she was interviewed by a man. Obviously her beliefs aren't as strong as she makes out.

I have a friend whose family is from Pakistan. Her parents have lived here for over twenty years, but her mother still barely understands English. They sent their children to a mixed school, yet expected their daughters not to have anything to do with boys. What's the point of living here if you don't want to be part of society?

Mez, Cyber Sunday?! As in Happy Pants Carlito possibly up against the awesome Jeff Hardy?!

Gah!

You get to watch that while I have to wait. At least I have some... *checks ff.net* Batista/Brian Kendrick fic to read.

... Completely random pairing for a fic.

I do indeed get to watch it. We ordered it this morning. I love Carlito. He's just so damn cute. Joe's done all the voting. I have no idea who he's voted for though! I can't wait! I'm going to be cooking dinner while it's on but meh. As long as I get to see men with big muscles and not many clothes on, I'm happy!
