MarMar Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 GenAm = General American. It's a accent model just like RP.
Guevara01 Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I'm doing English Language, i used both RP and Australian English phonetics for my coursework. Hopefully i used both well! xx
MarMar Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I use GenAm, but I have to learn about and know how to do RP.
Guevara01 Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 RP is sometimes difficult if you speak using a different accent. My teacher always says i put southern dialects into my phonetic transcriptions. I don't mean to, it's just how i talk! xx
MarMar Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Yeah, I see your point. I was taught RP in elementary and secondary school, but I've never used it myself.
TabbyCool Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Mercury Girl, your school seem to have taught you more about English than my school did, and I live in England!
MarMar Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Haha! Well, we learn a lot of grammar here, and judging from a conversation I had with a friend while I was in York, that's not something English schools have been very keen on doing. Seriously, they (she and her boyfriend) hardly know what a verb is etc.
Guevara01 Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I didn't really learn any of it at school growing up either, i took English Language at AS level and was like 'oh that's an adverb'! It's my favourite subject now, really interesting. xx
Frankie Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 In the UK they seem to think you learn by absorbing it or some sort of osmosis. You read real books and learn grammar by reading apparantly, not by learning about verbs, adverbs, nouns and adjectives. and as for conjuctions, past participles and all the other quirks of the language ...well you might as well be talking greek if you mentioned them to an English student! What is an unreal book is what I want to know?
Marieh Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 I wonder how many boys will end up reading this thread Hello. Well, i can be here...no-one said "Men" not allowed :-) Chicks are lucky to be chicks...every day they get to see boobies. <sigh> Hmm oh well I love taking a shower because then I can REALLY see them.. Jesus! Breasts really are not that great! I don't see what boys see in them! My favourite shop is Primark for cheap stuff but for the more expensive it has to be River Island. Breasts is food! Got a question ( like this is a girl threath ) . Who likes swimming with school , when all the guys are staring at you . .. Well I don't !!!! Do you know what I hate having 4 brothers , My oldest brother has a bathroom for his own but it is upstairs so when he puts his AXE ( or something on) You can smell it miles away , also in the bathroom downstairs allways smells disgusting. Our swimming teatcher is a man and dont understant "Women things". So I don't really like to swim at school.
