Chapter one hundred and fifty eight – Beth the agony Aunt.

Beth saw Jack sitting on his own at a table with his head in his hands. “Can I join you?” Beth asked as she grabbed the chair opposite him. “Yeah,” Jack said as he put his tear stained face up. “Oh Jack, what’s the matter?” Beth said as she put her hand on top of his. “Nothing, I’m just homesick,” Jack said unconvincingly. “Jack, I know,” Beth said gently.

“Know what?” Jack said stuttering. “Jack, I’m not going to tell you, you need to work it for yourself, and you know what it is, your not being yourself if your hiding it,” Beth said as she looked at him seriously. “I don’t know what to do Beth,” Jack said as a tear slipped down his cheek. “It’s simple, don’t hide it anymore, if I have guessed and I have only known you a few days, the others will too,” Beth said as she looked at him gently. “I know, but what if they don’t accept it?” Jack said worriedly.

“Then there not worth knowing,” Beth said seriously. “What about dad, will he accept it?” Jack said seriously. “Jack, there’s nothing not to accept, your still his son, his flesh and blood, just because your gay it doesn’t mean you stop being those things,” Beth said gently. “How did you guess, anyway?” Jack asked confused.

“Well, when Tony told me you take forever in the bathroom, and you have 50 different types of moisturisers, which by the way is way more than me,” Beth said laughing. “I don’t have that many,” Jack said smiling at her. “And then there was the fact you know exactly what make up would suit Maddie,” Beth said smiling. “I suppose that was a bit obvious,” Jack said laughing. “Most men wouldn’t know the difference between a lipstick or a blusher,” Beth said smiling at him, “and of course there’s the fact you changed the subject as soon as the word gay mentioned, and you didn’t look at Gypsy doing her belly dancing.”

“I suppose I did a pretty rubbish job at hiding it,” Jack said laughing. “Not really, I’m just a mother, I can tell when someone is lying to themselves, let alone to others,” Beth said smiling. “You won’t tell anyone will you? At least not until I get my head around it,” Jack said quickly. “Your secrets safe with me, but Jack, the longer you leave it the harder it will be,” Beth said as she looked at him. “I know, I just can’t face it at the moment, when I do tell dad, would you be there with me?” Jack asked nervously.

“If we still know each other, of course I will,” Beth said smiling. “I hope we will know each other for a long time, because I really like your family,” Jack said as he moved his chair next to Beth. “I really like yours too, but the holiday isn’t going to last forever, you have to go back home and so do we,” Beth said gently. “I wish it didn’t have to end, I really having you around and so does dad,” Jack said seriously. “And I really like you and your father too,” Beth said wistfully.

“Your ex husband is an idiot,” Jack said thoughtfully. “Where did that come from?” Beth said laughing. “I was just thinking, your such a lovely, warm person, your also a brilliant mum,” Jack said smiling. “Aww, thanks love,” Beth said as turned to look at him.

“If mum was still alive, I would of told her straight away,” Jack said as he stared into space. “You dad’s told me a lot about her,” Beth said as she smiled at him, “she sounded like a lovely person.” “She was, she was like you in many ways, I don’t remember her much, but what I do remember was that she was kind, thoughtful and very fun to be around,” Jack said as he looked at Beth. “You obviously haven’t heard me yell at Robbie or Kit for leaving their dirty washing around their room,” Beth said laughing. “Well you wouldn’t have to worry about that with me, I never ever leave dirty washing on the floor,” Jack said as he wrinkled his nose up in disgust, “but honestly, I really hope you and dad get serious, Lucas and I need a mum, and we want it to be you.”

Beth looked at him and smiled. “And if I had to choose the best bunch of step kids I would choose you and Lucas any day,” Beth said as she put an arm around him. “Thank you for listening,” Jack said as he put his head on her shoulder. “Anytime, come on we should get back, we don’t want to miss Amanda getting beaten again, do we?” Beth said laughing. “We certainly don’t,” Jack said as he got up, “oh Beth?” “Yes Jack?” Beth said turning around quickly. “I love that outfit your wearing!” Jack said giggling. “Well, tomorrow how about you can help me with my make up and clothes,” Beth said laughing as she opened the door to the bar. “Your on girlfriend,” Jack said laughing. Beth and Jack entered the bar giggling.

Great chapter. I love the idea of Jack being gay. Beth is so sweet, I hope they all manage to stay together after the holiday ends. Brilliant writing again Penny.
