Chapter Twenty-Nine

Hour upon hour passed and Martha still had her arms sprawled, lying in a seemingly lifeless heap on the stone cold, concrete floor; the same place she had been put after she was knocked out. The same pair of eyes sat on a wooden stool, watching her. Observing her every slight breathing related move, taking and memorising all the details of her small womanly frame. He'd lost track of time while moving his eyes up and down her motionless body. There was a deathly silence, so quiet it made everything seem so still and serene. Like in that time in the middle of every night when nothing moves or makes a sound, as if the whole world is dead. While his eyes were monouvering over her he started to think about Emily, his beautiful Emily. Her smile and her laugh. The way her big blue eyes used to shine up at him when she was little. The picture of Martha before him started to fade quickly and was replaced by memories of Emily sleeping as a child. In his mind Harry was hearing a la la bi. The same la la bi he used to sing to her before she went to bed at night. Lost in his delusions he stood up off the stool and crouched down beside Martha brushing a small lock of her hair away from her face.

"I've missed you," he whispered softly, stroking her cheek.

"Mmm what smells so good?" Lucas asked as her entered from the his bedroom and into the kitchen. It had been a while since he'd eaten a decent meal. Ever since his dad's accident it wasn't just Tony who was eating ill tasting food. Sure Lucas appreciated the getures of the towns people making his meals but it came to the point where Colleen's caserolls were seriously starting to disagree with his stomach. "Can I help with anything?" He quickly added noticing the that was Beth was taking out the roast from the oven.

"If only Matilda was this pleasant," She muttered under breath.

"Sorry?" Lucas asked, clearly confused.

"O nothing sweet. Yea you can go and get Matilda from my house and set the table," She smiled.

"Yup sure." Lucas was halfway out the door when he stooped in his tracks and turned around to look at Beth once more. The question running through his mind and it was a burden that he had to share. "Do you think he'll appreciate it?" He asked hopefully, wanting desperatly to be positive.

"I'm sure he will," Beth smiled lightly trying to ease Lucas' worries. Once he'd gone though she sighed loudly to herself. At least she hoped it would go well. Tony had been acting out of character all day. Snapping and everyone everytime they tried to help him and growling at anyone who told him it was o.k if it couldn't do something. Beth understood that he was frustrated about not being able to do anything for himself but she felt powerless do anything to help him and it was beginning to take it's toll on her also. The only option was for her to offer her support and all that did was aggrivate Tony more. She just hoped that the dinner would go well. Walking over to the phone she called Jack's mobile.

"Hello," He answered, not really in the mood for speaking to anyone.

"Hey it's only me, Just wanted to remind you that dinner's just about ready. When can we expect you?"

"O yea the dinner I totally forgot, I'm sorry Beth. I'll be there as soon as I can, I just have to stop by the station to pick up some paper work and I should be there soon." Jack didn't want to have to think about the constant drama in his love life, or now more like non exisitant love life. Throwing himself into paper work was sure to distract him, or so he hoped.

"O.k, that's fine, you know I think your father really needs this. Just to show him that we're all here."

"I just hope he doesn't take it the wrong way," Jack sighed.

"Me too sweet. Me too."

Jack absent mindedly walked into a frantic rush at the station. His mind was on other things, like his conversation earlier with Tasha. Not that it had been much of a coversation at all. She'd yelled at him and made him feel even more pathetic and useless that he already did. 'God why did you have to go and open his mouth before he had of had a chance to think through what he was going to say?' Jack thought. 'Because you're an idiot, that's why,' he scolded himself. When he finally came out of his own thoughts he saw officers rushing around like there was a big case going on. He saw Laura rush past him and curious about what was going on grabbed her arm lightly and pulled her towards him.

"What's going on?" He asked, hoping that he wasn't missing out on something important. Laura's heart sunk, she really didn't want to be the one to have to tell Jack what was going on.

"Um maybe you should ask McGrath or someone," She replied weakly trying to steer clear of looking him in the eye.

"Well I'm asking you," came the stern reply. "So why don't you just save me the hassle and tell me what's going on." Laura took a deep breath and swollowed, prepapring the tell Jack the whole sordid truth about Harry's motives.
