Chapter Thirty

He felt numb. Totally and completely. The feeling of overwhelming sickness had engulfed his body and he couldn't shake the churning in the pit of his stomach like he was going to throw up. He should have known that it wasn't going to be that simple to escape the pure hatred that Harry felt for him. How could he be so naïve, so stupid? He shot the guy's daughter for god's sake! He was kidding himself if he thought that he was going to get over that within a few years; if ever. He robbed him of his relationship with her, of all the joy that came with being a father and all the memories that would have been created had he not taken her away. All the pain of the last few years was beginning to resurface in Jack's mind and a tight, stabbing sensation was forming in his chest and catching in his throat. He'd been miserable; an absolute wreck in the time that elapsed after the shooting. It tore him apart inside to know that he'd inflicted that much pain on a minor. Having that night's events replayed over and over in his head night and day, taking over all other thoughts was enough to make him want to rip out his hair and scream. The gun shot tirggered by his fingers and then seeing her face. He never forgot that feeling, that genuine ache when she was unvailed. It was so sickening that he couldn't bare to look in the mirror most mornings, it hurt too much to see the murderer of a sixteen year old girl staring back at him.

"Jack," Laura said gently reaching a hand onto his shoulder. He looked away from her and up at the blank wall as a small, silent trickle fell down his cheek. It wasn't over. After everything that had happened the nightmare still wasn't over. He hastily brushed away the tear and darted his eyes to floor to once again avoid eye contact.

"So where is he?" He asked, starting to drown away his sadness with anger.

"We don't actually know. We've got quite a few of the boys out looking for him now."

"Well you should be looking harder!" He suddenly snapped.

"Jack..," She started but was cutt off.

"No. That bastard hired some guy to run over my father. And if you don't do something about it then I will." He quickly stood up but was forced back down when he felt two strong hands push down on his shoulders.

"O no you don't shunshine," came McGrath's deep voice.

"What?" Jack yelled.

"You're not going anywhere near this case, you have family involved so it's personal."

"Tell me something I don't know." He bit back smartly. "You're damn right it's personal and I want to make sure you find him."

"Sit back down!" He ordered, finally asserting his authority."You're not going anywhere, and that's final." After a thirty second deathly staring contest Jack retreated to sitting down on the seat. He wasn't mad at McGrath, he was just doing his job. To be honest at that moment he wasn't even mad at Harry. He was mad at himself for causing all this. He had actually started to believe that all this was all his fault; everything. That he caused all this to happen and he hated himself for putting his dad in the line of fire for a mistake that he had made. It wasn't Tony's fault.

"Look I know this isn't easy for you," McGrath started, trying to take the soft approach again. "It's just not a good idea if you're out there. Maybe you should just go home and we'll call you if there's any news."

"No I want to be here. I wont get in the way but I want to be here, when you bring him in."

"Are you sure?"

"Yea I am."

"Fair enough," He resigned walking behind the desk to carry on with what he was doing.

*********************************************

"I won't be long," Harry hushed as he kissed Martha on the top of the head. "I'll be back soon I promise." As he turned his back, Martha started the flicker open her eyelids. She'd been awake for sometime now. But had stayed still and quiet as she was completley scared when she felt Harry touching her cheek. She had no idea who he was and what he was doing. All she knew was that the voice was the same of the person who had hit her over the head and it was probably best that she pretend she was still unconcious. The pain from the nock had slightly subsided but for the most of it, it still hurt like hell. She heard the big thud that the metal opening made when the man left and closed it. She needed to get help and fast; before that guy came back.

"O thankgod," she gasped aloud as she felt into her back pocket and found her phone.Without hesitating she dialled Jack's number.

*******************************************

Jack's patience was beginning to wear thin. He knew he said he would stay out of the way but this was beginning to grow on his nerves. He felt so powerless to do anything.

"What's taking them so long?" He muttered to no one but himself. He felt his phone vibrate, distracting him from the outburst he felt coming on. Thinking it was Beth he rolled his eyes, ready to tell her he wouldn't be able to be there for dinner after all, but when he saw it was Martha his heart skipped a few beats. Why was she calling him?

"Martha!?"

"Jack, I need help," She started quickly. "I don't know where am. Some guy knocked me over the back of the head and he's taken me to this place. I can't see anything outside because there's not much light and there's no windows anyway." Her breathing started to quicken and her words were getting jumbled.

"Hang on, slow down."

"Jack I can't he'll be back soon."

"Where has he gone?"

"I don't know," He words were dripping with fear and Jack could hear the quivering in her voice. "All I know is that he keeps calling me Emily."

"Wh-" He started but stopped himself. It felt as if someone was seriously running over his heart with a bulldozer when he figured it out. Martha quickly spoke again snapping him out of his depressive thoughts.

"Jack, please," She begged. He'd never heard her sound so scared. "You have to help me. I don't know what he's going to do with me and....and," She started to stutter. "I'm scared." She began to cry. The sound of her tears just twisted the knife in further for him.

"Martha don't cry. Please don't cry," He begged. "I need you to keep it together. I know you can do it."

"I think he's coming," she whispered in dread.

"Whatever you do just keep the line open. It's the only way we'll be able to track you down." He said before the line went quiet again.
