Chapter Thirty-Two

Two police cars silently pulled up; one after the other. The wheels skidding into the dirt, making it fly out diagonally to the wheels. The destination was deserted and the whole car ride had been quiet apart from the odd cough from an officer in the back seat. Jack eagerly reached out his hand to open the door and flung it sideways.

“Close it now!” McGrath ordered the second the door clicked out of place.

“What? Why?”

“Because we’re not going to go barging in there like a bunch of key stone cops. I thought you wanted her to be safe?”

“I do,” Jack said defensively.

“Then be quiet and close the door. Charging in like a half cocked moron is not going to do her any favours. If anything it’ll make things worse. Not to mention our agreement. You’re not to be involved in this. Got it?” Jack’s eyes darted towards the dashboard as McGrath waited for an answer.

“Got it constable?” He repeated raising his voice.

Jack slowly reached for the door and closed it showing his resignation then turned to McGrath to listen for what he planned to do.

‘Jack where are you?’ Martha repeated in head. Her body was aching from the position she was trying to maintain on the floor and the cold flat surface beneath her was beginning to numb all her remaining feeling. As she silently gulped in another breathe she remembered what Jack had told her on the phone only an hour ago again. "I need to you to keep it together. I know you can do it."

He had faith in her. He was counting on her to get through this until he got there and she wasn’t going to let him down. She had faith in him too. Martha knew he would be there soon. He just had to be.

Jack tapped his fingers repetitively on the dashboard in front of him impatiently, hoping that it would stop his growing frustration. He focused his eyes intently on the small droplets of rain beginning to fall on the windscreen. One after the other they fell quickly and landed heavily on the clear glass in front of him. He sat transfixed by the movement. It'd been half an hour since they arrived, but to Jack a whole life time had gone by. Seconds felt like minutes and minutes felt like hours. He was completely agitated, like a little boy trying not to squirm after being a car ride for too long.'Just think about what it will be like when she's safe,' he told himself. 'Just think about the end. Stay focused on that. Think about when you have the chance to talk to her and apologise and tell her how you really feel. For the first time you'll be able to tell her what you feel for her,' He started getting ahead of himself.

"How much longer do we have to wait?" Jack suddenly burst out, eagerly anticipating what was to come.

"WE," McGrath started indicating that Jack was not part of the team,"Will wait as long as we have to, until we're sure to move."

"Think you could do that some time in the next century?" Jack scoffed under his breathe.

"Watch it constable!" McGrath warned.

"I have been. I've been watching that friggen dashbaord for the last thirty minutes thankyou very much!" He said smartly.

"We had a deal."

"Yea I stay out of the way if you protect her. I should just sit back and be quiet then because you seem to be doing a mighty fine job of that." He rolled eyes. "Sitting on your ass in a car while she's in there with a murderer that's clearly insane!" The other three officers were silent watching Jack cross the line. McGrath was baffled by his words. Never had a constable spoken to him like that. Refraining his anger he took a deep breathe and began to speak.

"So what do you suggest we do then?" He asked the eager young man.

"You're asking me?"

"You're damn right I am. You're so quick to critisize my methods why don't you tell me what you think we should do then." He was so sure that he would prove Jack wrong. Jack paused for a second to gather his thoughts before answering.

"Get out and check the place out and try and get in." He replied like the answer was exremely obvious.

"Yes and how are we meant to do that when there's only one door?" He was quick to shoot him down.

"One door that we can see from here. How do you know there arn't more around the back? Besides if we sit here like you want and wait in the hopes that he just might come out, who's to say he won't see us and them lock himself back in there with her? Either way there is danger involved, but we should be chosing the one with the least risk? God by the time we get in there he could have already murdered her." He quickly gulped and closed his eyes in pain. He hated the thought of of anything happening to Martha. It literally sunk his heart.

McGrath couldn't deny Jack's logic made more sense. He opened his mouth to speak, squinting his scowling eyes. "I'm warning you though, when we're out there you follow my orders. Your on thin ice as it is."

"Right then," Jack smiled, unfastening his seatbelt. "Now we're getting somewhere." But as the last door to the car shut the unmistakeble sound of a loud gun shot eccohed through the still air followed by Martha's terrified screams.

oh my gosh! yay you updated!!!! Thank you Thankyou Thankyou. YAY

lol, what she said.

Poor Jack it would suck having to take orders from McGrath, I've never taken a liking to him for some reason.

I hope Martha is free soon, if not for her sake, then for Jack's.

Well done Krystal.
