Obviosly people will pick the one they like because of the person in it, even I do it sometimes. But I do give a reason that I would give if I didn't like the person in it.

I think ditch the reason, people will still vote for the person in it etc.

I think most people give genuine reasons but people who pick an avatar because they like who is in it generally go well I like ...... because really they like they person in it but for their reason they just say 'good colouring and cropping'

Yes, your right there. I think that is just them being lazy because there are some people who give a really good detailed explanation of 'why' they have chosen the avatar(s). But to be honest, sometimes I can't really explain why i like the avatar, since i do no have photoshop, so I will often give a short reason

But, every vote counts

I can't help but laugh when I see about 6 repeats of 'I like the colouring and cropping' all the way down the page!

I know! Then when you have seen tonnes of the "i like the cropping and colouring" there is a very long, but good reason saying 'why' they like it.

Lately it has become very obvious, seeing the short reasons.

I can see your point about a lot of people commenting on the colouring and cropping but I think people are genuine about liking those things. I have often commented on those 2 elements and I can assure everyone that I definately don't vote for icons based on who is in them. The problem is there's not usually a lot to comment on in a 100x100 icon other than colouring, cropping, contrast, brushes, text etc. I feel that sometimes simple icons are the best (I am a 'less is more' kind of person!) and you can say very little about why you like them, you just do. Art is like that you know instantly which you like best but you can't always explain why.

If things were to change to a poll system then comments could be an optional thing if people wanted to give the artist some recongition and/or constructive criticism.

I think these contests are a great idea and it would be a shame if they died out due to a lack of interest. As I have said before I do think pinning them again or having a seperate subforum may be a good idea. I know this has been debated before and I know the reasons why they were unpinned but I'm just trying to think how we can generate some interest in the contests again.

I agree with the poll. If people want critisism on their icons, they can post them in their thread or the Random Artwork Thread after the contest after the winner has been announced.

Polls are good but it would have to be a rule that you have to post who you voted for to see if they add up right.

^ Yeah I think that would be quite a good idea...but kind of defeats the purpose of a poll in the first place! It's a catch 22 in my opinion you win/lose both ways! I agree with karen, we need to find a way to re-generate interest in contests, particularly this one and LIMS, I understand if people don't want to or can't enter every contest but I'm sure numbers have dropped!
