I'm going to do voting different this time, just a tester. It will be a poll, see if it increases voting.

Yep. You'll have to say which one you voted for. You can say why if you want to.

What if people do not state why they voted?.. will their vote not count?

If they vote an don't say why, that still counts. It just an experiment to see if it increases voting.

That means people could vote for themselves.

That is a problem but the only way to overcome it is if everyone votes for themselves. Seeing as the poll system only lets you vote once then it will even things out.
