Loving reading the reviews! :P lol Here's the next chapter... Ok, it's sad but I promise you some things will start to look up in a few chapters time! But then again, they might not... :P

Chapter 20

Martha looked ahead at the blank, white hospital wall in front of her. How could somewhere that would be the setting for so much sadness, be so bland? Why couldn’t she numb her pain? For what felt like the millionth time since she’d been in that hospital, in that bed all alone except for the little growing, living thing inside her; she roughly brushed away a solitary tear. By now her face was taught and dull, her eyes red and watery just from all the tears she’d cried. She didn’t want to cry them anymore, she didn’t want to feel like this and yet there was this one little thing that was stopping her just giving up. Subconsciously she rubbed her tummy, feeling the slight bump protruding underneath the hospital gown.

Over the last few days in hospital it felt to Martha like she had experienced every kind of emotion possible, so much so that she was going to burst. All the different issues that she had to deal with were spinning around her head, giving her no piece of mind. She was angry; angry at Jack for making the situation worse, for not keeping her secret. She was upset; as she had been for such a long time, that she was in this position, that her life was in such a mess. She was devastated about Chris’s affair, not because she cared about him, but because she kept wondering just how she could bring a baby into the world with a father like that. She felt used and betrayed on so many levels.

Suddenly, the door opened and Martha was brought out of her thoughts. Expecting it to be the doctor she turned her head, only to see Chris walk in.

“So you finally decided to come visit your pregnant fiancée.” said Martha. She had meant it to sound sarcastic but it sounded more sad than anything else. From behind his back Chris brought out a beautiful bunch of flowers, orange and white lilies filling the paper wrapping.

“I thought I’d bring these to brighten up the room.” He said softly, but Martha just turned away. Sensing her stubbornness, Chris then walked to her bedside table and placed the flowers down gently.

“We need to talk.” He said, reaching out to turn Martha’s face towards him. She flinched under his touch, but still looked him in the eye, wanting to make him feel some kind of remorse.

“Right so you want to talk now? Well fine start talking. Explain to me how you find it so easy to hit me, to cheat on me, to force me to do things you know I don’t want to do.” By now tears were pouring down her face as she relived all the painful memories in her head, again.

“Martha I’m sorry." Chris seemed to pause, as if trying to find the right words, "I know I can’t change what has happened, but I want to make it up to you. I want us: you, me and the baby, to be happy. I promise I won’t hurt you again.” Martha looked at him in disbelief.

“And you expect me to believe that? I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up hitting your own child when he or she’s barely two years old.” Martha bit back spitefully.

“I’m so sorry, I know I’ve put you through so much pain, but I promise you everything is going to turn out for the better. You and the baby mean everything to me.” He paused looking at Martha’s face, looking at the pain etched out, clear for anyone to see. “You’re coming home tomorrow so I’ll pick you up at 10, ok?” All Martha could do was nod, helpless to do anything other than agree with him
