Chapter 26

Redundantly, Jack walked back home. All he could do was think of her. The fact that she was in danger, the fact that he was already missing her. As he trudged through the door of his house, his mind drove him straight to the fridge. He needed a cold beer just to sort through what had just happened. And in all honesty, Jack was confused. He didn’t understand what to do, and he wasn’t sure what he felt. His heart and his mind were telling him the opposite and he felt like he was being pulled in too many directions. His mind kept randomly picking out words from within his brain and chucking them at him. But really it all came down to where his heart lay. Alex and Martha. They were both amazing. He just didn’t know any more…

Knock. Knock.

The sound made Jack look up from his place on the couch. Through the glass he could clearly see the form of Chris. ‘Great’ he thought to himself, ‘just what I need’. He opened the door and looked at Chris who was starting to go red in face from what appeared to be anger.

“She’s not here†said Jack in a monotone voice.

“Like hell I’m going to believe you mate.†snarled Chris, as he pushed past Jack’s body and nearly tripped into the living room. Jack just smiled grimly, and gestured to the open space.

“Come in.†he muttered to himself sarcastically.

Within moments he could hear doors slamming and Chris trailed the apartment. Jack looked blankly into the corridor and then gave up any pretence that he cared and slumped himself back on the couch.

Things quietened down when it appeared that Chris hadn’t found what he was looking for. Jack’s eyes were closed until he felt the shadow of Chris fall upon his face. Slowly he opened one eye.

“Can I help you?†he asked lazily.

“Tell me where she is.†Chris asked harshly.

“Your guess is as good as mine.†Jack answered bluntly, frankly too upset to do anything.

The next thing he knew, Chris’s hand had grabbed a hold of Jack and had pulled him up and off the sofa.

“Tell me where she hell she is Jack, I mean itâ€

“Chris, I-don’t-know! Do I need to spell it out to you or what? Don’t you think that if I did, I’d already have gone? Now get out of my house – you’re trespassing.†said Jack smugly.

Chris scowled courteously in return.

“Don’t know why your in love with that slut anyway.†He muttered, and Jack only just noticed now, the smell of alcohol on his breath.

“Just get out.†Jack managed to say through gritted teeth. And Chris obligingly left.

Chris grimaced as he left the house. Martha may have left but he knew how to bring her back. All it would take was a bit of leverage. And with that, Chris set off for Sally’s house, where Alf would be tonight...
