But the next chapter is here! Ta-da! enjoy :)

(Dedicated to Becky btw for always keeping me on my toes. lol )

Chapter 27

Martha finally got the call when she eventually decided to answer Jack's relentless calls. She found herself in a café, somewhere along a lonely road, staring resignedly at the screen of her mobile, as it vibrated furiously in her hand. The glowing name read 'Jack' and it must have been the millionth time he'd called her in the last 24 hours. She swore softly under her breath, and punched the answer button with her thumb perhaps a little bit harder than she should have done.

"What do you want." came her blunt answer as soon as the phone was next to her ear.

"Nice way to greet a friend." Jack replied sarcastically.

"Don't try to be funny Jack, it doesn't suit you." Martha replied, the hint of a smile playing on her lips as she tried to retain the decided frown on her face. It wasn't there for anyone in particular to see, but she was stubborn in all senses of the word. And yet, Jack's voice was just making her smile, making her feel slightly lighter, a bit happier - the little competitions over will of mind restarting again like they'd never been stopped. And then Jack became serious.

"Seriously, Martha you've got to come back-" and before Jack could even utter the reason for his demand, he was interrupted by Martha's outburst.

"Jack, I don't care what you say, I'm not coming back, I explained this, it's best for everyone. Don't try to make me change my mind, nothing you say will." snapped Martha. Silence ensued as Jack worked out the best way to handle the situation so that Martha wouldn't hang up on him.

"Alf's in a coma."Said Jack quietly, deciding to take the direct approach, realising that there would really be no other way to get the point across. All thoughts ground to a halt in Martha's brain.

"What?"Martha breathlessly whispered. Suddenly the café surrounding her faded, although her eyes were wide. It was like being plunged into a pool of ice - unexpected, shocking, like her reactions had been taken away. Her focus regained, she stared at the table in disbelief, looking at the uninviting numbing grey colour that represented her state of mind so well. Numb. She couldn't quite sort out the information in her head, comprehend what Jack was going on about, register the problem.

"What?" she repeated aimlessly.

"Alf had an accident." Jack informed her gently. "They found him at the bottom of the stairs - it looked like he had fallen. They took him to hospital straight away – he had an injury to his head and they think that's what's put him in that state. The doctors are hoping that it'll only last a few days but they just say we have to wait."

Martha managed to breath slightly, as she acknowledged the facts. Now that she felt more conscious, her mood was verging on desperate.

"But he's ok, right? Jack he's ok isn't he?"she asked down the phone, her hand gripping the device so tightly that her skin was turning pale white.

"We don't know Martha."Jack replied softly, aware of what state she'd be in.

"No,"Martha started "but the doctors. The doctors said a few days. A few days is fine." By now her speech was getting erratic and Jack was starting to worry slightly.

"ok, ok" Martha muttered to herself."I'll be there real soon, ok?" She talked into the phone but really didn't expect a reply.

"Martha, you're in shock, let me come get you." Jack tried to reason with her.

"Jack do you even know how far I am right now?" she snapped back. "It would take you ages to get here, let alone find me. If I drive through the night I can maybe get there tomorrow. In fact, I better start the drive now, so I'm going to have to go."

"No! Martha-" but Jack was mercilessly cut off, as Martha grasped for all her stuff lying on the table and crammed it all into her bag. Grabbing some change from her pocket she left down the money for her coffee, and ran out of the café, ready to return home, where her family needed her.

But although the reason for her return was purely to do with her grandfather, she couldn't help but think in the back of her mind, that it really would be great to see Jack again.
