Hi. I'm new at this. Just wondering, everyone has mentioned brushes. Is this brush strokes or something different? I have also saved a brush from I think it was page 5 or something but it is not coming up in Brush strokes. Don't know if I did something wrong. Sorry if been answered already, have not read whole thread! Thanks. (oh yeah I'm talking about Photoshop 7)

Brushes are basically 'shapes' that can be used when you select your brush tool in the sidebar. The reason your brush is not showing up is probably because you haven't defined it as a brush preset. I'll show you how. :) (Bear in mind mine will look a little different because I have CS4 (!! :D)

1. Open your brush.

2. Go to Edit >> and click on the option "Define Brush Preset..." and a window will come up.

3. Give it a name and press 'Ok'.

4. To see the brush come up, go to your brush tool in the sidebar.

5. Then when you click on the brush icon you'll see 'Brush' on the top bar and a little icon with a tiny arrow beside it. Click on the arrow and a drop-down menu will come up. Scroll to the bottom and your brush will usually be there. ou can then use it. :)

It should be the ame method in all versions of PS (mines just a prettier colour :P)

I know this is a really stupid question but I have very little experience with Photoshop and creating Avatars in general. I’ve looked at quite a few tutorials and they always seem to have a step to duplicate the layer/base. What is the actual purpose of doing this? Why can’t you just carry on amending picture with the current layer/base?

If you duplicate your base it perserves the layer on it so if you do something wrong you can just delete it easily. And you can duplicate your base and set it to different modes to make the icon lighter/darker etc. :)

^Cerise, as always…thanks. :)

I didn't know what a base was until early 2008... two years after I started making icons. The whole base/duplicating base thing is confusing when you're reading it on text, but when you start doing it it's really easy and it can improve your icons a lot. :)

Speaking of tutorials (and being in a tutorial thread...), there are a load of them here. Just click on the icon that you like and you'll be directed to the tutorial. Some are really easy, and some are dead hard. All my attempts come out wonky :(
