Yeah. A combination of the three is usually used. But basically:

Hiragana: Local Words

Katakana: Foreign

Kanji: Words that used to be pictures but have slowly changed to writing.

Yeah I'm fluent in spanish because I spent 5 yrs at school learning it....I can do sign langauge abit..can do the alpahbet, numbers up to 12 and some simple words too. I did learn french for 1/2 a term after school but cant really remeber any off it!

That makes sense. I know a Japanese girl, but her English is amazing so there aren't any problems! :P

I've studied Italian for 4 years, so I'd say I was pretty fluent....although it's a lot easier having MSN conversations in Italian than having to speak, they speak so damn fast! :P

When I used to study French and Italian parallel to each other, it became so complicated in exams, I ended up mixing vocabulary and studying what I can only describe as Fretalian! :P

^^ Ahh...sorry, I can be rather slow sometimes!

I love studying a LOTE too...in fact, I wanna study at least Italian (and possibly another language) at Uni....my friends think I'm weird, they can't see the attraction of a foreign language.
