You’re comments have been absolutely amazing, and as a result, have spurred me on to write a much longer chapter. Enjoy.

Chapter four

Martha awoke to find Jack’s arm draped over her side protectively, and his hand placed over her still flat stomach.

It was probably just coincidence that his hand rested there, Martha thought to herself, but it still evoked flutterings in her stomach.

She turned over and gazed up adoringly at her husband, and a small contented sigh escaped her lips.

“Am I that good looking?” Jack smirked without ever opening his eyes.

Martha laughed, “Are you that big-headed?” she replied.

Jack opened his eyes and adopted a feigned hurt expression.

“Oh alright then, yes you are that good looking. Is that better?”

“Much better” Jack grinned and gave his wife a long kiss.

Martha couldn’t help but let out another sigh of pleasure.

“There you go sighing again – it’s enough to give a man a big head.”

“Yours couldn’t possibly get any bigger,” Martha quipped.

Jack was about to protest when Martha captured his lips with another kiss, and any form of protest died immediately, as Jack cupped Martha’s face and deepened the kiss.

When they finally broke apart, breathlessly Martha added: “I could definitely become a morning person.”

Jack grinned and pulled her into his arms, letting out a small sigh of pleasure.

“Now who’s doing all the sighing?”

Tony, Luc, Beth and Matilda were gathered in the living room, chatting with Jack and Martha.

“Actually Dad, there was something we wanted to tell you,” Jack said.

“What’s that, son?”

Jack and Martha smiled simultaneously and Martha reached out for Jack’s hand.

Beth picked up on this, and suspecting the good news, she started to smile.

“We’re going to have a baby.”

The whole room exploded with excited chatter, and Jack and Martha were launched upon by four very happy relatives.

“Easy, give us room to breathe,” Jack laughed.

“Sorry, I just...” Tony trailed off, and Lucas suspected he saw the hint of a tear in his dad’s eye, though he never said anything.

Tony pulled Martha and Jack in for a warm hug.

“Congratulations,” Beth exclaimed.

“This is awesome,” Lucas said, and Matilda immediately went over to give Martha a hug. Lucas went over and patted his brother on the back.

“You must be so excited,” Beth said.

“You have no idea,” Martha grinned.

“Well, if you ever need any advice, feel free to come to me and Tony.”

“Thanks guys. We really appreciate it.”

“And of course I’m sure our child will be looking to its cool uncle too,” Jack said looking towards Lucas.

“You bet!” Lucas smiled.

They descended into easy, happy chatter for several more hours.

“Martha! Jack! Good to see you.” Alf stood aside to let the couple enter.

“Ric, I’m glad you’re here, we wanted to talk to you too,” Martha smiled at her cousin.

“Sure, what is it?”

Jack stood behind Martha with his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her head.

“I’m pregnant.” Martha was straight to the point.

“Brilliant,” Ric exclaimed.

“That’s fantastic love, I’m so pleased for the both of you,” Alf grinned and held out his arms for his granddaughter.

After releasing Martha, Alf shook Jack’s hand enthusiastically and then patted him on the back.

“I’m so happy,” Alf said.

“So are we,” Jack added.

They walked over to the sofa and the four of them chatted for hours.

“This telling everyone thing has tired me out,” Martha yawned as she and Jack lay on their own sofa at home.”

“Maybe next time we just tell Colleen and let nature take its course.”

“Next time?” Martha lifted her head and raised an eyebrow at her husband. “You’re getting a bit ahead of yourself aren’t you?”

Jack laughed. “I did enjoy telling our families – I couldn’t have kept it in much longer.”

“Me neither,” Martha agreed.

Jack kissed Martha long and hard on the lips, and then led a trail of kisses down her neck.

Martha let out a small groan.

“Not that sighing thing again?” Jack asked teasingly.

Martha looked at Jack’s eyes, filled with the same desire that she knew he could see in hers, and decided to let the comment drop...this time.
