Bulimia's prime-time treatment

My understanding from our Counsellors at the Centre is that most eating disorders are like all other addictive/compulsive behaviours. Mattie will always be a "recovering bulimia sufferer". She will never be "cured" because the tendency will always be there. She will always need her friends and family to help build her self esteem. Hopefully over a period of years her self esteem will grow to the point where a recurrence will be unlikely. At this stage the storyline should see her "on the road to recovery" with definite signs of improvement not a complete recovery.

I really hope this storyline will be draged out more. As many of you has said: They better not pull a Jade with this one.

But if it is like Merc (?) said, only been going on for about 3-4 weeks, I don`t see it very unrealistic that she can stop this very fast. I think it is posible to pull yourself together and stop if it hasn`t been going on for very long.

^ I agree with that actually. I think people assume that an eating disorder is something that goes on for a long period of time, which is often true, but there are also people for whom making themselves sick is a one-off thing, or something that passes very quickly. The underlying issues are the same though.

Yes, totally. The fact that Mattie has low self-esteem (sp?) won`t go away just because she stops this whole food-thing. And they could show that a thing like this could turn into something else. Like cutting herself or something like that.

^^ That's true. But I don't know if Home and Away is ready to tackle something like cutting without rushing it or having the person who is cutting themself have an ultra quick recovery.

Well, cutting was just an alternative. There are loads of stuff kids could do based on low self esteem. She could also be doing something not that bad, like starting smokeing or something. As long as they don`t make it go away straight away, I`ll be happy.
