I don't know if there is a "right" way, I just open the texture as new pic and drag/copy it over, and usually (99% of the times) set it to 'soft light' as the others creates too dramatic/ugly effects.

Click me Do gradients work like textures, ie import into PhotoShop or do I have to create them myself? I'm sorry, I know I'm not explaining myself very well, but go into the link and scroll down to the black and white gradients....maybe then my problem will make more sense....or maybe it won't.... Copy from the tutorial and paste into a new layer in Photoshop.
