Chapter 15 Jack had been given a month off work by Peter to try and help Martha get through this awful time. Martha hadn't done anything for the past week. She just sat there on the sofa gazing into space. The only time she ever moved was when one of the twins was crying, she would then pick them up and carry them back to the sofa and hold them whilst again, staring into space. Nobody had managed to get through to her, not even Morag, or Ric. They had ended up organising the funeral on their own. It was to be held on thursday, in two days time. ***************** The service was beautiful, just how Alf would have wanted it. Practically the whole of Summer Bay turned up to say their goodbyes. Quite a few people had decided to make speaches which meant that the service lasted about and hour. Sally had offered to have the wake at her house and so everybody piled back to have drinks and chat about the sad events that happened. Jack was looking for Martha as he knew how hard today's events had been for her. He asked about five people but none of them had seen her. He thought he knew where she might be. He told Sally where he was going before heading off down the beach to the cliffs. He saw her from a distant sat down with her arms round her knees. He hated seeing her like this. As he got closer, he could see that she was crying. It was the only the second time she had cried since Alf's death. Jack approached her from behind and pulled her into and embrace. Martha tried to pull away, but Jack's strenght was better than hers, so she gave in and just cried. Eventually her sobs died down. "Jack, I miss him so much." she said. Jack could tell that she was about to cry again any minute. "I know Martha, but Alf wouldn't want you like this. He'd want you to get on with your life" Jack added. "I suppose you're right" she said looking up to him. "He'd want you to be the best mother to your children, and to continue with your life in the best way possible." Jack replied, "The twins miss you Martha, and so do I. I hate not seeing a smile on your face" "I know. I love you Jack and I could never have gotten throught this without your help." She said giving him a faint smile. "I know I've not been the best mother and Jack I've missed them so much. I've missed you aswell" They stood there for five minutes looking out into the ocean before Jack broke the silence. "You know, they'll be wondering where we are." "Yer, we should probably get back, and besides Harry and Jodi will be awake and full of energy." And with that they headed back to Sally's hand in hand. ******************** "Alright mate, we were wondering where you got to" Tony said as Jack and Martha walked through the door. "Yer, we just needed some fresh air" Martha said before pulling Jack upstairs to fetch Jodi and Harry who were now screaming there heads off. Martha picked up Harry who was crying the loudest and then comforted him in her arms. Harry and Jodi were now making noises at what people said and Jack and Martha were convinced that they would be talking soon. They took them both downstairs as they needed feeding. By the time they got downstairs people were beginning to leave as it was quite late in the afternoon. There was only Leah, Dan, Rachel, Kim and Morag still around. Morag soon went though as she had to get to the city on an important case. Leah said she'd stay and help Sally clear up. Martha did the same whilst she left Harry to play with a toy with Jack and his sister. It was six o'clock before they left and they put Jodi and Harry down straight away as they were tired. Jack made some hot chocolate and him and Martha snuggled up on the sofa, before heading upstairs for an early night. ******************** Martha and Jack were woken up by a couple of rather loud toddlers the next morning. As Jack walked saying hello in the way that you talk to babies, Jodi said 'lo'. Jack couldn't believe it and immeadiately went and got Martha who was preparing two bottles of milk downstairs. Martha was so happy, it made up for the terrible week she'd had. They decided to go out onto the beach as it was a lovely day. Harry and Jodi were now eight months old and were puzzled by everything. They could crawl everywhere now and were getting into everything. You had to keep a really close eye on them. Jodi was the louder one and she was the oldest. Harry usually followed her and copied her, so it wasn't a shock that Jodi was talking before Harry. There were a few guys surfing as there were some quite big waves. Jack was wearing his boardies and so was almost expecting him to be the only one to go in the water, but to his surprise Martha was wearing her bikini and had agreed to go in with him. It would be the first time Harry and Jodi would have been in the sea. They seemed quite keen though. Jack had rung Tasha and told her to come down and join them with Konnie and Robbie. She agreed and had set up camp with them and was already heading into the water with Konnie who was now eighteen months old. ******************** After about half an hour in the sea, Harry started to cry as he was getting cold so Martha brought him out to dry off. She wrapped him up in a towel and he was soon asleep in her arms. Unfortunately this meant Martha could not get on with other things, so she watched the Jack, Jodi and the others having fun in the water. Jack soon came out thought as Jodi had gotten cold aswell. "Alright babe?" Jack asked coming out of the water "Yer I'm good. You?" "I'm fine, hows Harry?" "He's really tired, I think Jodi woke him up this morning. I've given him another bottle because he was hungry, but that should be alright as long as he doesn't have one again till later." Martha replied "Alright then" said Jack who was restling with Jodi as she wanted to go to Martha. "Shall I take him whilst you have some fun with her?" he asked "Okay" Martha said before taking Jodi from him and giving him Harry. Jodi was becoming tired aswell and Martha could tell that it wasn't long before she gave into the tiredness. Robbie was building a sandcastle with Konnie so Tasha got in some sunbathing. Things were on the up for both families, but for how long could it last? Preview Things can't get much better, but they can get alot worse....... Enjoy. Thanks for all the comments. R&R
