Chapter 16

Jack was working all morning and was up at six am. He was already at work, which left Martha to deal with two babies. Today was Jack's first day back at work after Alf had died. Martha didn't know how she was going to cope. Jack had been her rock. She couldn't have got through it without him and of course her gorgeous children. Just then she heard Harry crying. Sounds like he's hungry Martha said to herself. At nine months old they now had two words in their dictionary. 'Lo' and 'Bye-Byes'. This afternoon Martha had an appointement with their doctor as the twins needed a regular check-up to see how much progress they were making. Jack should be off work by then. As Martha placed Harry in his high-chair and warmed up the bottle she went into day-dream mode. She couldn't stop thinking how lucky she was to have the perfect husband, and perfect children. 'PING'. That was the microwave telling her the milk was warm enough. Just another day in paradise. What could possibly go wrong?

Jack had managed to get out of his shift early and was driving back to collect Martha. He wasn't going very fast as it had quite a few bends and Jack was one of the most cautious drivers in Summer Bay. Martha always made jokes about this which brought a smile to Jack's face. He was thinking so much that he didn't see the oncoming car in the middle of the road. SMASH. Jack lay there with his face on the steering wheel, unconscious. Blood dripping down onto the floor. The person in the other car was already dead. He had no hope of getting help until a car drove past. Would Jack die?

Jack was already late so Martha tried ringing him again. It just rung out. She'd have to go on her own. As she set off she saw a police car with it's sirens on. She thought nothing of this as it was a regular occurance in Summer Bay and Yabbie Creek. She got to the turn where Jack had crashed. She immeadiately recognised the car and ran over tears streaming down her face. The ambulance arrived to take Jack away. He was in a bad way. Martha said she'd follow with Harry and Jodi. How could this happen to her? She'd just lost Alf. She couldn't cope without Jack. The journey to the hospital was the longest it had ever taken her. When she arrived rung Tony to tell him what had happened. He was on his way as they spoke. The nurse told her Jack had gone into surgery. He was in a stable condition but the operation was dangerous. They couldn't tell yet whether or not he would survive.

I know its short but I wanted to give you a cliffhanger.

Chapter 17

As Martha sat in the waiting room watching the world go by she was trying to figure out how she would cope without Jack. How would Harry and Jodi cope without a daddy. Then she pinched herself. She had to stop thinking negative. Jack would be alright. He would be there for his kids. The nurse came out. She said she wanted to talk to Martha alone.

"Right, well I'm pleased to say that the operation was successful and Jack should make a full recovery"

"That's fantastic" Martha said.

"Oh, and the crash wasn't Jack's fault. The police told me to tell you."

"Thanks"

"You can go and see him now" she added before walking off. Martha told Tony and Beth the news before going to see Jack. He was asleep, but she knew that he could here her.

"Jack, I don't know how I could have coped it you hadn't of made it. You mean so much to me and to Harry and Jodi. We all love you so much. I will always be here for you Jack even if you leave me, I will still love you....." Tony and Beth then walked in with the twins. Martha said that she'd go and ask for a bottle of milk as Harry was hungry. Tony had called Luc and told him what happened and that Jack would be ok. As Lucas was in school Tony said that he shouldn't come down because everything was ok. Lucas eventually agreed. Lucas was getting married in four months time. The twins would be one year old then.

When Martha came back in Tony said that he and Beth had to go. Martha was left alone apart from the twins of course. Jack started to come round when Jodi started crying. Martha went to pick her up and didn't even realise Jack was staring at her. When she did she was so happy. Jack didn't look to good, but at least he was alive. They started talking and Martha ended up staying until seven o'clock. Eventually she had to take Harry and Jodi home. But she said that she'd see Jack early in the morning.

ONE MONTH LATER

Jack was recovering well and he and Martha were stronger than ever. The twins were ten months old. Lucas was getting married in three months and all focus was on that. Lucas and Mattie had got straight A's in their exams. Jack had been off work for quite a while now, but MacGrath said he had to have three months off. Jack loved his work but he loved spending time with his family more. There was no arguing from Jack. Martha had waited on him every hour of every day, but now Jack was doing most things with the twins and was trying to let Martha relax. She had been really tired lately as she was the one who was always getting up in the night to sort out either Harry or Jodi if they'd been crying. Today Tasha and Mattie were coming over to organise wedding plans. Cassie would be over later too, so Jack said he'd take the twins out becuase he knew they wouldn't want any men there. Martha said that he didn't have to but he insisted. He was going over to Robbie's. That meant watching the football. Martha's life was back on track.

Mattie brought over the bridesmaids dressed for them to try on and also showed them her wedding dress.

"Oh my god Mattie that's gorgeous" Martha squeeled

"Glad you like it, anyway, I was wondering if I could ask a favour" she asked Martha

"Sure, what is it?"

"Well someone has been going through my wardrobe and I just wondered if I could keep the dress here"

"Of course you can. I'll just have to make sure Jack doesn't see it."

"Thanks Martha"

"No problem" Martha said giving her a hug. By the time the girls had finished it was four o'clock and Mattie had to be getting back. Jack had been at Robbie's all afternoon and also wanted to get back and see Martha. Martha phoned him to tell him it was alright to come back. All the girls had gone.

"Hi babe"

"Hey gorgeous"

"You can come back now, they've all gone."

"Ok, I'll be back in five minutes"

"Bye" Jack said then hung up the phone. He said bye to Robbie and then went back home. Martha was pleased to see him and Jodi and Harry. She had missed them. They were currently asleep so Martha put them in their cots. She then went and found Jack.

"Hey babe, I missed you." he said giving him a passionate kiss

"Missed you to" he eventually said after catching some air. He picked her up in a firemans lift and carried her upstairs and minutes later their clothes were on the floor.
