Chapter 39

A week had passed since the funeral. It seemed like the whole family had gone into hiding. No-one spoke or did anything. Jack occupied himself with work and Martha looked after the kids. There was no comunication. They were both in denial about what had happened. It would have helped if Martha had talked to someone, and that someone needed to be Jack, but Martha was going to talk to someone else. She was sitting in the cliffs that had caused her so much heartache, and then again so much happiness.

"Lily, I need you to come back" she said. "I need you here with me."

She stayed in the same position looking out to sea for hours, she only said those two sentences. Tears were soon rolling down her cheeks. If only she could turn the clock back, she could have prevented her whole family from so much hurt.

AT THE SCHOOL

One of the teachers had to phone Jack, as Martha hadn't come to pick Indi up. He came straight away and took her home to find Martha. The twins and Charlie were in the kitchen making some food.

"Hey guys, where's your mum?" he asked

"We don't know, she wasn't here when we got back" Harry replied

"She didn't go and pick Indi up from school did she" Charlie said

"No, she didn't, it's so unlike her" Jack added

"Maybe she's gone for a walk" Jodi suggested "I'm sure she'll be back soon," she was trying to stay positive. Martha was still sat in the cliffs. She didn't care how long she had been there, she just needed to get away from everyone. She wanted her life to be over. For the first time in hours Martha moved, she moved closer to the edge, blanking out her fear of heights. Nothing could stop her!

"Mummy" she turned around. Lily was stood there. Lily's ghost. That one word made Martha realise that she had a family to look after. They had just lost Lily, it would hurt them so much if she killed herself. She had to get back to them, but not without saying one final goodbye.

"Lily, I miss you so much" Martha said

"Mummy, I will always be here" Lily replied

"I know you will" Martha said to herself

"And I will always love you" she added before disappearing.

"I will always love you to" Martha replied under her breath, as she realised Lily had gone. She looked at her watch, it was nearly five o'clock. She had completely forgotten about everything else that was happening. "Indi" she said to herself, "School, what have I done?" she added before running off back to the house. As Martha had been quite a long time, Jack was starting to get worried, he could tell that she wasn't coping, and could have done anything. She came in out of breath, as she had run all the way from the cliffs.

"Martha where have you been?" Jack asked

"I went, I went for a walk" she replied

"A walk to where?" Jack asked again in a rather harsh tone

"To the cliffs"

"Martha, you didn't pick Indi up from school, anything could have happened to her, I got called by the teacher to go and pick her up" he finished

"Jack I'm so..." she tried to say but was cut off

"Don't apologise, and I don't want to hear any excuses, you left our daughter alone, we have already lost one child what would it have been like if we'd have lost another? Infact, you know what, dont answer that" The kids had now disappeared as they knew that it would end up in a heated argument. Martha didn't reply, she just ran out of the house in tears.

"Nice one dad" Jodi said

Martha ran back to the cliff, she was going to finish off what she had nearly done earlier. She got closer and closer to the edge, nothing was going to stop her.

"Martha" Jack called out. Once again, her plans had to be put on hold, by someone yelling her name.

"Look Jack I don't care what you say, nothing is going to change my mind" Martha said

"Martha I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you like that"

"Jack, you had no right, you don't know what I've been doing today, where I've been, who I've seen"

"I know, but that's only because you never tell me anything, you never talk to me anymore" Jack replied

"Jack, even if I was going to talk to you I would feel like everything I said would just go in one ear and out the other, and besides, you haven't talked to me lately have you" Martha retaliated.

"No, I know that, that's why I came after you, I knew where you'd be, Martha we have to talk" he finished. He held out his hand hoping that Martha would grab hold of it. To his delight she did, he pulled her into a hug. She broke down in his arms. Only Jack and Lily could have stopped her from jumping, even she knew that, she was just so grateful to have Jack's support.

"Martha, I'm taking some time off work so that I can be with you and help you through this." Jack whispered in her ear. She didn't reply, she just held onto him as if the world was going to end.

It was the first time since Lily's death that Martha had actually opened up about how she was actually feeling. She told Jack about seeing Lily and how she convinced her not to jump the first time. They talked for what seemed like hours before they realised they had to get home. The kids would be wondering where they were.

"O well, I see you two have made up then" Jodi said to them as the walked through the door hand in hand

"Yes we sure have" Jack replied before giving Martha a kiss on the lips.

"You know I think I preffered it when you were fighting" Jodi said before walking off into the kitchen.

In the morning Martha wasn't feeling very well. She had been feeling like this for a while, she was sick all day so it didn't occur to her that she might be really sick! It was three days since she first felt ill, so Jack had decided that today he would take her to the hospital. There appointment was quite early on, so they went straight there after dropping Indi off. They were going to see Rachel. They were five minutes early, but Rachel was free so she asked them to go straight in.

"Right, well what seems to be the problem?" Rachel asked

"Well, I've been being sick for about three days now" Martha replied

"Ok, we'll run some test and find out what's wrong with you, but I'm afraid to say, the cancer may have returned." Rachel finished. This was all Jack and Martha needed, just as they were starting to get their lives back on track, they could face another hurdle to climb. After waiting for the results to come back, Rachel asked them to come into her office again.

"Right well, I'm pleased to tell you that it's not cancer." Rachel said

"That's great, but what's wrong with her then?" Jack asked

"Well, somehow, you're pregnant Martha" Rachel replied. Neither Jack or Martha spoke. "Martha you're pregnant" she said again. "I think I'll leave you two alone for a minute" she added before before leaving the room.
