Chapter Three

With a furious punch, the masked man smashed his fist into Martha’s head, knocking her out cold. He then continued to run his calloused hand slowly over Martha’s flat stomach, moving further upwards, feeling tingles go down his spine as sinful thoughts flashed through his mind. But the masked man knew he had more important things to finish first. Revenge.

A heartbroken Jack lay lifeless on the couch. Every breath took too much effort. Every breath seemed pointless, unwanted, hopeless, without Martha. Jack had almost lost Martha before, and he didn’t know if he could go through it again. There was only one thing to do.

‘I have to find Martha and apologise,’ thought Jack. But there was one problem; Martha left no note, no clue, no direction of where she had gone. But this wasn’t going to stop Jack.

His mind filled with a passionate purpose, Jack sat upright and walked briskly up to the Surf Club.

“Tasha!” called Jack. Seated on the couch, drinking an orange juice sat Tasha, smiling down at her 1 year old daughter, Ella.

“Hey Jack” smiled Tasha. But her smile faltered as soon as she saw the state Jack was in. His face was blotchy and red and his eyes had a strange look to them. Almost as if the life and love of them had died.

“Jack, what’s wrong?” queried Tasha. Feeling the tears rising, Jack took a painful gulp and replied,

“It’s Martha. She’s…g-gone.” Jack watched as a look of surprise and sadness filled Tasha’s face.

“Oh my gosh…no, you mean…Martha’s left you?” she whispered. At the sound of those words, Jack’s heart took another lurch. Just hearing those words was enough to make Jack want to scream and cry.

“What? She hasn’t told you…I mean, I thought surely she would discuss this with you?” asked Jack.

“Well, I did talk to her, but she seemed pretty unsure,” stated Tasha softly.

‘I can’t believe Mac left him. How could she do this? How could she overreact so easily! Something isn’t right,’ thought Tash. She looked up at Jack and saw a single tear trickled down his face.

“Oh Jack,” she stated, putting Ella down on the couch, and reaching up to give him a hug.

“This can’t be happening Tash. It just can’t!” sobbed Jack. His whole life was Martha. They had their whole future planned out. A future together. Martha leaving him wasn’t part of the plan.

‘How have I let it get this far,’ thought Jack, ‘why didn’t I just pay more attention to her. She is the beautiful woman I love. And now she’s gone.’

Meanwhile, the masked man walked briskly up the dark, cobbled pathway. A single smile filled his face as he knocked on the steel door. A middle-aged man, dressed similarly to the masked man answered.

“I have it. Give me the money,” stated the stranger. His voice was cold and raspy, filled with hatred and danger. The masked man could smell the odour of the stranger’s room wafting into the air.

“Here,” the masked man snapped, handing the stranger a wad of money. And with that he turned around and headed back down the street.

“You’re going to pay Summer Bay,” he whispered quietly.
