Jess Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 ^^ LOL! I went to stay with an Italian family, and I meant to say, "Can I have some fennel, please?" and I accidently called the father "gay"! (The word for fennel is an informal word for gay...I didn't know that at the time. ) ETA: And apparently, my friend said my accent was daft - so that didn't help matters, either!
girl_from_uk Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Just out of interest....i dont really think you can but can you pick up an accent from being in a new place for 2 days? This is because I went to Scotland to see my family and when I spoke to my other sister on the phone whos not from Scotland, she said i was talking with a Scottish accent and I was convinced I wasnt and even when i got back home Im sure I was talking with a hint of a scottish accent with the way I was pronouncing words.....anyway could this be possible or not?

I think it depend if you have a good musical ear or not. I find if I'm talking to someone on the phone with a distinctly different accent to me I will mimic it without even realising I'm doing it. If I hear a word said in a particular way my ear picks up on it and I say the word the same way.
valli Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 I think it's possible. I do it, that I know Some people pick up different accents very quickly, so I think it's possible.

Mistified Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 What's your favourite accent/sexiest to hear accent? I just adore the french accent, especially when spoken by a fine thing like Oliver Martinez. I also like a subtle Northern Irish accent i.e. someone who just has a hint of it. The Welsh one is cracking too, although not sexy to me.
Dan F Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 When I came back from Oz, I was told that I had picked up a slight, but distinct, Aussie twang - I think I spent too long down at the Surf Club! Shame it faded back to normal Nottin'um accent!
