Teaser:

“Hey, Drew. Perfect timing.”

“Perfect timing?”

“Yeah, how about going on a road trip with us?”

“Road trip?”

“Are you going to be asking us questions the whole day?” Leah asked.

“No. It’s just that you didn’t tell me where we were going.”

“Oh, right. Leah and I were going to take VJ and Ryan over to mom and dad’s for a visit. Want to come? Seeing as that you didn’t get to spend much time during the trip.”

“Yeah, sure. Just let me go in and grab my ipod and some stuff and then we can go.”

“Great.” Both Leah and Dan said in unison.

Shannon- The answer is No. :P

Since it's Christmas and it's the season for giving, here's a teaser for you:

They came. Very slowly at first but soon they were swooshing past her. All the happy times that she and Peter had had. The time they first met. Their first kiss. His proposal. ‘Where did we go wrong?’ she thought to herself. ‘How did we get to this?’ Her reverie was rudely interrupted by the phone ringing. She muttered a curse silently and picked up the receiver.

“Clare Brody.”

The caller gave her what she had been dreading. Peter had no way out of this anymore. She had to interview him now. And he was going to be angry at her for this. But she had a job to do. And she had to put aside personal feelings and follow the evidence. ‘After all, the evidence never lies,’ she thought to herself as she exited the office and headed to the interview room to face the hardest task awaiting her.

Merry Christmas to all readers of HS! Here's the next chapter:

Drew ran as fast as he could when he saw his dad. He couldn’t bear to see him like that. All he had ever wanted in his life was to get to know his dad. When Peter had died, Drew had only heard good things said about him. It took Peter’s selfless act in saving his son that finally won Drew over. But, he had lost it when he hooked up with Amanda. It wasn’t until recently that they had patched things. And now, Peter had screwed up again. However, instead of blaming him and being angry at him, Drew knew something wasn’t right and he was determined to find out what.

That was what led him to look for his father. Yet, seeing him like that, homeless and having no one to care for him, only broke his heart. He wanted so badly to turn back but couldn’t. He didn’t stop until he arrived home where he found Dan and Leah and the boys heading out.

While on the way, Drew’s phone rang. It was Peter. Drew pushed the ‘Reject Call’ button. He didn’t feel like talking to his father at the moment. Plus, Leah and dad were here and he didn’t want to cause any tension seeing as that they had patched things up. Unbeknownst to him, his reply in not answering the call would cause his father harm.

They arrived at Kevin and Noelene’s place and Drew spent the time getting to know his grandparents even more. He managed to learn more about how Peter was when he was young and to Drew’s amusement, found that he and his father were very much alike.

Meanwhile, back at the station, Clare was stunned. As much as she tried to deny it, as much as she tired to convince herself otherwise, all the evidence were pointing towards Peter. The last straw had been the GSR on his hands. She had asked Jack and Lara to accompany her out of the interview room and told them to just watch him and not talk to him. She was going to do the interview. She had to.

She went into her office to await the results from forensics. She hoped that by giving Peter some time, he would come to his senses and talk to them. Whilst she was doing that, she rested her elbows on the table of Peter’s former office. ‘Peter.’ Somehow, she felt calm in here. Maybe it was the thought that Peter had occupied it for nearly a year. The more she thought about it, the more suffocated she felt. She rested her head in her hands and shut her eyes.

Next Chapter:

Meanwhile, in the interview room, Peter Baker sat in a daze. All he could remember was getting a phone call; hearing gun shot; seeing Tracey’s dead body; holding a gun with blood on his hands; Jack and Lara; being tested for GSR. And now, here he was, sitting and staring at the wall. He had no idea about what had happened. He wasn’t even sure if he had killed Tracey. He just sat and stared without saying a word.

The door opened and in walked Clare. He didn’t know if he was happy or not to see Clare. He looked at her face, trying to gauge a reaction or a signal that everything was fine. But she was unreadable. ‘That was Clare,’ he thought to himself. ‘Never one to give things away.’ He sat up straight as she sat down and opened a folder and started to write in it. There was silence. Clare was the first to break the silence.

“Peter, do you know why you’re here?”

His response was to look at her.

“You’re being charged with the murder of Senior Detective Tracey Thompson. You were found at the scene of the crime with blood on your hands and you tested positive for GSR. Forensics have also backed it up with evidence of your fingerprints on the gun and around the place. Right now, all the evidence points towards you. What do you have to say?

“What else can I say? You said it yourself that all the evidence is pointing at me. What I say will not be of any use.” Peter replied; speaking for the first time since he was brought in here by Jack and Lara.

“I want to know what happened out there, Peter. If you know something that can help you, you should tell me. We want to help you, Pete. But we can’t if you’re not going to co-operate.”

“You want to help me? Please, Clare. Stop making a mockery out of me. If you wanted to help me, you would’ve come to me sooner instead of spouting rubbish by telling me that I’m being charged and all.”

“Look, Peter, this isn’t about us anymore. For once, put aside your pride and anger and tell me what happened. Your life depends on it now, Peter. More than ever. If you don’t want to, it’s fine. You’ll just go to jail for it. Do you want Drew to be known as the son of a murderer? You saw the reaction of the town to Kim about Barry/ do you want your son to live like that? What about your brother? Your parents? Do you want Lilly to know her father as a murderer?”

“She’s not mine, remember?”

“Please, Pete.” Clare begged.

Pete’s response was to lean back and cross his arms. ‘A defiant pose,’ Clare thought to herself. Just as she was about to get up and leave, he spoke.

“I received an anonymous phone call at around noon and was told not to do anything. Not to say anything or to turn around. I was told that they had something very dear to me and that if I wanted it, to go to the old house in Old Green Lane Rd in 30 minutes. They said that if I didn’t, I would lose it. At that time, I didn’t know who it was. I was worried and scared. I rung Drew but there was no answer and I panicked... and that was when Jack and Lara came in…hugged Lara and before I realized it, I was here and being tested for GSR.” Peter finished his version of what happened.

“Thank you.” Was all that Clare could say and she walked back out of the interview room and headed to her office. She placed the folder down and sat on the chair, trying to absorb the information that she had been given. Suddenly, the phone rung and Clare picked it up.

“Clare Brody.”

“Detective Brody, this is the DNA lab from the hospital. We have your results concerning the paternity of your daughter. They are ready for collection.”

“Ok.” she replied nervously as she placed the phone down.

Claire sat back in her hear chair wondering whether to go and get the results. She wanted to know the truth. But, if Lilly was Peter’s daughter she knew that she would be able to give him some good news that might be able to bring his spirits up by trying to get out of his mess. But, she also knew if it was Rice’s baby, Pete would lose all his will power and take the wrap for Tracey’s death. It’s not like he didn’t know what will happen because he does. He was a detective; a well respected one at that.

As Claire was about to grab her coat, Jack entered the office saying,

“Murphy was on the phone and he wants to know if we have formally charged him yet?”

“Where’s Lara?”

“Getting a drink.”

Claire walked past Jack and stopped near the reception desk where she said,

“I have got to go out for about 30 minutes. I will be back no later then that. There is something I have to do.”

“What about Pete?”

“Keep him in the interview room. If Murphy wants to speak to me, tell him that I am charging him now. But, what ever you do, do not charge him until I come back.”

“Ok.” Jack and Lara said as they watched Claire leave the station.

Claire frantically waited by the doctors’ door as her hands were shaking. She was so nervous she just wanted to get it over and done with. As she was about to sit down, the doctor called her into the room.

“I really have to get back to work, so can you just tell me?”

“The results are….”

Claire hoped and prayed that Lilly was Peter’s. But, noting was going to prepare her if the baby was Rice’s. She crossed her fingers as she heard the doctor say:

“Evan Rice is your baby’s biological father.”

Claire sat back in shock as she tried to take the news in.

Preview: Will Claire tell Pete about the paternity results?

Can Dan get through to Pete?

Who starts to doubt Pete’s innocence?
