Chapter Twenty One

Martha yawned as she woke up, looking at the clock and the sleeping bundle beside her. She remembered the night before and sighed to herself. Her boyfriend was in hospital, and her eldest child was having nightmares remembering Jana’s death, the accident and her father reminding her of Jana. She noticed the eyes open at the movement of the bed “Sorry.” She apologised to Callie.

“It’s okay.” She said quietly. She’d been quiet all night, when she wasn’t upset and crying.

She looked at the clock, it was 9AM “We’d better get up.” She said, getting out of bed stretching.

Callie was quick to follow, grabbing her dressing gown and slippers from the side of the bed. She hadn’t been able to handle being alone last night so she’d crept in, only to find Martha also having trouble sleeping. It had appeared they were both happy for the company.

Martha smiled as she went over to the crib, where Kiah was “Hello sweetie.” She said softly, lifting the giggly baby out of the crib “I don’t know how you can be so happy so early in the morning.” She told the baby “It’s obvious you’re a morning person, and it’s also obvious that you got it from your father.” She said smiling at the still giggly baby. She took the baby into the living room and put her on the mat. She knew that Kiah would rather crawl around ruining everything then sit in her highchair, waiting for Martha to bring her breakfast. She saw the eight and a half month old head straight for the glasses that Martha had left on the table, so she leapt up and grabbed the glasses “Sorry Kiah, I don’t think so.” She told the baby, keeping them safely out of harms way “These are our good glasses.” She told the baby.

“Talking to yourself?” Said a friendly voice from the doorway.

Martha’s head shot up, and she smiled at Sasha “I’m talking to Kiah.” She said laughing “I’m not talking to myself Sasha, because I unlike you have better things to do.” She teased.

“What, like talking to glasses?” She said, smirking.

Martha laughed, shaking her head at her sister “Whatever little sis. I will always win. Remember that now.” She reminded her.

Callie came in “Mum can you help me?” She said “The tap is on too hard.” She explained, smiling at Sasha “Hello Aunty Sash!” She said cheerily.

“Urgh, she inherited Jack’s morning side to!” Martha complained, leaving Sasha laughing at her.

“Aww must be hard having a four year old to wake you up every morning!” She said smugly.

“Watch it or I’ll send her in to you tomorrow!” She warned.

“I’m a morning person, I couldn’t care less!” She said. “I only woke up late because I couldn’t sleep last night. I was a bit worried about you guys.” She admitted.

Martha smiled “Don’t worry we’ll be fine. Weren’t you going to help her with her bath?” She said smiling.

“Alright I’m going!” She said laughing, leading Callie out of the room.

Martha looked at Kiah, making sure she hadn’t knocked anything over, or stolen her sunglasses again. She loved doing that lately, and it was always Martha’s sunglasses she’d go for, never Jack or Callie’s. She quickly made her some toast, and cut it up into small pieces and walked over to Kiah “Munchkin, come here.” She said, walking toward her. She put her in her lap, only to have her crawl out again, grabbing a piece of toast and putting it in her mouth.

Soon the breakfast was eaten, Callie’s included and soon everyone was clothed and dressed. Martha looked sideways at Callie “I’m going to go and see Jack, anybody else want to come?” She asked, looking around.

Sasha noticed Callie didn’t say yes and she noticed Martha looked saddened, and Sasha said “Mac, I can mind Callie.” She said quietly.

Martha nodded “Sure, I’m sure he’ll want to see Kiah anyway.” She said, trying to remain positive. She knew she couldn’t force Callie. She picked up Kiah “Well, I’m off. I’ve got my mobile if anything goes wrong!” She called, heading out the door.

----------------

She walked into the room, smiling as she noticed Jack eating his breakfast. He was partly sitting up, and he occasionally winced from the pain of a sudden movement but other than that he was fine. She noticed his smile drooped when he realised Callie wasn’t with her “Sorry.” She apologised “She didn’t want to come and she didn’t sleep well again last night. It’s really hitting her hard, and Sasha said she’d mind her.” She said, walking over to the bed, holding Kiah tightly.

He sighed “It’s okay. I had a feeling she wouldn’t show up, apparently it was really bad for her.

Rachel came in, smiling “I’ve nothing to do so I thought I’d come and steal your beautiful daughter away.” She said, smiling at Kiah “I haven’t had a hold in a while.” She said smiling.

Martha smiled gratefully “Thanks, me and Jack need to talk about Callie.” She said with a sigh “She’s avoiding coming to see him because of the memories it brings back.” She said sadly.

Rachel put her hand on Martha’s shoulder “She’ll come round” She assured her “She won’t be able to stay away from her dad for too long.” She said smiling, as she and Kiah left the room.

Jack and Martha were talking for about an hour when they heard the door open. They turned to see Sasha there, smiling at them, her arms wrapped around Callie, who looked a bit scared.

“Callie!” Martha called out, as Sasha slowly brought her over to Martha, releasing the child into her arms “Shh, its okay Callie.” She soothed, as a lone tear came down her cheek.

Jack looked at her, holding tightly to Martha and reached out a hand to her. She hesitated, and then took his hand slowly. He pulled her towards him, holding her tightly. It hurt, but he didn’t care. All he cared about was that Callie had the guts to come and see him after all she’d been through. He kissed her head.

She leaned on her dad “Sorry.” She said softly.

He hugged her “Its okay, Callie. I understand.” He assured her.

-------------------------

It had been a few hours since Callie’s arrival and now the family was together again, Rachel had reluctantly handed Kiah back to her happy mum as she headed home, humming to herself happily. She couldn’t believe how happy she was. She opened the door, only to find Kit in there, playing with the bubbly one-and-a-half year old Jaidyn. She narrowed her eyes at Kit but decided to be polite “Hello.” She said evenly.

Kit heard her enter but she didn’t respond to her. She loathed both Rachel and Sasha; however everyone thought that they were amazing. Jarrod had gotten with Sasha, even though he knew Kit still loved him. She’d break them up, she also intended on breaking Rachel and Kim up, taking Kim and Jaidyn as her own.

Rachel sighed as she headed to her room, getting changed into comfortable clothes before heading back out “So, do you know if he’s been fed?” She asked, trying to remain pleasant. Again, she was ignored “Alright then.” She said, quickly walking over and pulling the toddler out of Kit’s arms.

Kit jumped up, reaching for him “Kim said I could baby-sit!” She started arguing, like a child.

“Then he should have consulted me before he handed my son down to an immature little brat.” She said calmly.

Kit glared at her “How dare you!” She said angrily “Give Jaidyn back to me!” She demanded, trying to grab him “You have no right calling him your son.” She hissed.

“Aww, being a cat now, having a nice little hissy fit while hissing at me? Wow, you really must be five years old!” She said laughing. “Just leave, Kit. You’re not welcome here anymore, so just leave. I was going to thank you, for minding my son but I guess I shouldn’t waste my breath.” She said, she was being the adult in this conversation, keeping her cool. “Please turn you’re voice down, you’ll scare Jaidyn.” She said, gritting her teeth but keeping her voice calm.

“What’s going on here?” Sasha demanded from the doorway, hurrying in. She and Rach had decided to go to the park with Jaidyn when Rachel finished work.

Kit glared at Sasha “What the heck are you doing here?” She snarled.

Sasha glared at her “I’m here to see my friend!” She snapped, she and Rachel had gotten close, really close, they were best friends. In fact Rachel and Kim were planning to baptise Jaidyn, it hadn’t been something they’d been planning to do, Rach knew he hadn’t been baptised.

Rachel quickly took Jaidyn out of the room, the toddler was beginning to get upset by the yelling, and she closed the door firmly as she put him in his room, putting his music on and his toys. She hurried into the room, her collected attitude long gone “Katherine Hunter get OUT!” She yelled at her “This world doesn’t revolve around you! Get that through your thick head!” She bellowed at her.

Kit glared “This is Kim’s house not yours!” She snarled at her, all three were getting worked up when Kit launched herself upon Rachel, punching her hard in the face. Rachel staggered back, and was ready to make an attack when the door burst open and Kim, and Jarrod came in.

Kim grabbed Rachel and Jarrod grabbed Sasha, who even though she hadn’t moved to launch herself onto Kit, he knew it was coming. He knew her too well.

Kit moved back, fury, hatred and loathing visible in her face. She wanted to rip Rachel to threads. She was finally beginning to get her life back on the line, ready for love again then both Rachel and Sasha come along and ruin it.

Rachel rubbed her face, it hurt. She glared at Kit “Leave!” She ordered, rubbing her mouth where she’d been punched.

Kit went to argue but Kim looked furious “Katherine LEAVE!” He ordered loudly.

Kit left, grumbling and whinging, and Kim looked at Rachel “That, looks painful.” He said, indicating to her bleeding lip.

“I’ll live. She hits like a ponce anyway.” She said, wiping her lip “I want to get her so bad Kim. What were you thinking, leave Jay with her? You know she wants him. She says she should be his mother not me!” She said sullenly.

“I don’t want anyone else to be his mother other than you. We’ll sort this out.” He soothed, holding her tightly.

NEXT TIME: Will Rachel retaliate? And do Martha and Jack finally get some good news?

Chapter Twenty Two

Martha smiled as she watched her two daughters playing together, Callie and Kiah were drawing; well, Callie was. Kiah was doing more of a scribble. “Callie.” She called “Sasha’s going to take you to see Daddy, remember sweetie? Go get ready.” She said softly. Jack had asked if he could have time alone with her. No problems, just he hadn’t been able to spend time alone with her since his accident and Martha knew he missed it, so she’d agreed, saying that she’d take Kiah for a little swim. She watched as Callie rushed off to change out of her pajamas, and soon she heard Sasha come out.

“Calliope, you ready?” She called.

Callie grinned as she rushed out “Yes Aunty Sasha.” She said, giggling before kissing her mother and sister goodbye, and heading out the door.

Martha smiled as she left. When Sasha had found out Callie’s full name she’d started using it more, and Callie loved the attention she received from her Aunty Sasha. She looked at Kiah, who was busy scribbling “Well, baby girl, looks like it’s just you and me.” She cooed, picking up the baby “What do you want to do today?” She said softly. She took her into the bathroom, giving her a quick lukewarm bathe, before heading to change her. Soon she was dressed in a cute pants and top, with socks on her feet. Martha picked up Kiah and headed out into the main room, carefully putting her on the mat and whirling her toys around, smiling as Kiah gurgled and laughed at the roaming toys. She held Kiah’s tiny hand softly, watching her kick her feet up. She realized how much she and Jack had missed of Callie’s life, as she watched her beautiful daughter playing. She and Jack were blessed to have spent the first eight months of Kiah’s life by her side. She picked up the baby absentmindedly “Well, Kiah, I guess maybe we should go to the beach.” She said softly, heading over to the door, keys in hand. She made sure she had her mobile on her, in case the hospital needed to call her or anything. She headed out the door, locking it, with Kiah in hand.

----------------------------------------------

Kit sighed as she folded the washing, she hated this task. She’d rather be out doing something than just folding washing. She heard a knock at the door and noticed it was Sasha. She glared at her “What are you doing here?” She snapped angrily.

Sasha sighed “Look, Kit. The three of us need to sit down and talk. Really talk. We’re going to be seeing a lot of each other from now on. Your practically Jack’s sister, and I’m Martha’s sister. We need to at least be able to be civil to each other. I’m willing to make an effort, because I care about my sister and I don’t want her to be stuck in the middle of our domestics all the time. And maybe you and Rach need to sort things out.” She said, getting straight to the point “And this needs to be sorted out as soon as possible, between you and me. Poor Callie, she’s sort of stuck in the middle.” She explained “You and I never got off to the best start, with Jay and that. And now probably because of Jarrod.” She continued.

Kit listened to her, her head on side thinking “You’ve got valid points, I’ll give you that much.” She admitted “And you’re right, it’s not going to be fun for our families if we’re constantly at each others necks. Maybe if we start off being civil, and see how we go from there?” She suggested evenly. She wasn’t ready to start liking Sasha, she didn’t know if she ever would but she could make an effort.

She smiled “That’s good to know. You know, Alf suggested I come here. And now I see he was right. He said that Martha and Jack have enough on their plates with Callie, Kiah and Jack’s surgery not to have to worry about us.” She said “Anyway, I’ve got to go but I’ll see you around, Kit.” She said, before turning and leaving.

------------------------------------------------

Martha smiled as she walked along the beach, talking quietly to Kiah. She noticed people smiling at her, at the mother so obviously doting on her daughter. She saw Rachel up ahead and she headed over to her “Hey.” She said.

Rachel looked up, from her seat in the sand “Hey.” She said sadly, sighing as she put her head in her hands.

Martha sat down beside her, holding Kiah tightly to keep her warm from the cool sea breeze “Whats up?” She asked, looking at her.

“Kit hit me yesterday.” She admitted “And we’ve been at each other’s necks for ages. Then she pissed off Sasha, so now it’s me and Sash against Kit. I think.” She said, stunned as she saw Sasha heading up the beach, seeming happy. Sasha had said she’d run into Kit today so why was she so happy?

“Hey.” Sasha said, smiling happily at them as she too sat down.

Martha turned to her sister “Rachel said that you and Kit are at each other’s necks.” She said, frowning.

Sasha saw her sister’s look and knew that it was better that she’d gone to Kit, explaining “Me and Kit talked today. We talked without killing each other.” She said laughing “It was a shock to the system. You should do the same, Rach.” She said seriously “It helped me and Kit, maybe it’ll help you two.” She said, squinting due to the sunlight.

She sighed “I doubt it’ll do any good.” She said honestly.

“What can you loose?” Martha said, trying to get her to see sense, before Kiah started fidgeting “Alright, that’s my sign. Kiah’s had enough.” She said, laughing to herself, handing Kiah to Sasha so she could stand up, then she took the baby back “We’re headed off to the diner.” She explained as she waved goodbye to them, heading off.

-------------------------------------

Martha bounced Kiah on her knee gently as she sat, sipping her coffee. She smiled as she noticed Tony enter “Hey Tony.” She greeted him warmly.

“Hello Martha.” He said, nodding to her. “How are you and Kiah going?” He asked.

“We’re fine. Have you seen Callie today?” She asked.

“Yeah, I was at the hospital earlier. They were in there having a great time, might I add.” He said smiling “She looks a lot like Jack. So does Kiah.” He said, tickling the little girl.

Martha smiled as Kiah giggled. She obviously loved being tickled by people. She looked at her watch, surprised “I can’t believe it’s already quarter past four!” She exclaimed “I better go get Callie soon, she’s probably wearing Jack out big time.” She said smiling. She’d been in the diner for about an hour, and many of their friends have come up to her, tickling or playing with Kiah. She got up, paying Irene, who gave Kiah a final tickle and headed to the hospital.

---------------------------------------

“Hey!” She said fondly to Jack as she entered the hospital room.

He looked up, from where he was playing a game with Callie and smiled at his girlfriend “Hey beautiful.” He said softly “How was your day?” He asked, smiling at her. He was in normal clothes now, and was much better. He’d be going home soon.

Martha looked closely at him “It was fine.” She asked, he seemed nervous for some reason. She looked at him again “Jack, is everything okay?” She asked. She looked up as Rachel entered.

“Alright, I need another cuddle!” She declared, taking Kiah from Martha “Callie, wanna come with me and get some juice?” She asked, smiling.

After the trio had gone, Jack turned to Martha “This wasn’t how I was planning it. But, I’ve been thinking for about a month now. Martha, I love you. Nothing will ever change that. You’re mother to my two children and you’re the most amazing mother anyone could ever ask that their children could have. So, Martha. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?” He asked, looking at her nervously.

Martha looked stunned; she hadn’t been expecting this one bit.

Jack “What do you say?” He asked her….

Chapter Twenty Three

Martha sat, motionless, staring at Jack. She was stunned. She hadn’t expected him to propose to her, at least not while he was lying in a hospital bed with a rather bad wound in his back. She stared at the ring he’d pulled out. It was a beautiful white gold ring, with an emerald in the centre of a square. It was stunning. She stared at him.

“Martha?” He asked, nervously. He wanted her to say yes so badly. He was beginning to get a bit worried, she seemed so shocked and unsuspecting.

She looked at him, a smile starting to spread on her face “OMG yes Jack!” She squealed, throwing her arms around him and laughing happily.

He gave a sigh of relief “Thank god!” He said, relieved “I seriously thought you were going to say no there!” He said, his breathing down to normal again after the scare. He slipped the ring on her finger, smiling at her.

Martha smiled, moving her fingers so the light would catch it “When did you have time to get it?” She asked, her face glowing.

“Pete and I managed to get some time to go shopping so I decided, why not go shopping for the ring in Melbourne? So then I told Pete I was going to go ring shopping, which is why he’ll probably send Claire along later, demanding to know you’re answer even though he was certain you’d say yes.” He said smiling. “Callie and Kiah have only completed our happiness, and maybe somewhere down the line we’ll have more children.” He said softly.

Martha nodded “I’m putting the limit on five children.” She warned.

Jack smiled “That limit is fine by me. After all I don’t have to go through pregnancy, and all that. As they say, the joys of pregnancy!” He teased her.

“Enough teasing Jack Holden!” She warned “You know, I think naming Kiah’s last name Holden, and Callie’s last name Holden, it was fate!” She exclaimed. “I’ve always wanted to know, where did you get Callie’s name from?” She asked, curious.

“Calliope Rose Holden? Well I liked the name Callie, Jana however liked unusual names, for example Calliope. So she went searching, and saw the name Calliope and we both fell for it. She’d call her Calliope and I’d call her Callie. Simple. Jana wasn’t very maternal.” He admitted “Which was why her taking Callie was such a shock. But that also explains how easy going she was about suicide.” He said with a sigh “At least Callie didn’t go into crisis care.” He said, relieved.

“I know what you mean.” She said softly. “I seriously never really thought about being a mum. Then I discovered I was pregnant after we’d been going out for a while. And I will admit, since this is the time of honesty, I will say I didn’t know if you were gunna stick around Jack. I was worried. I had slight suspicions I was pregnant, I just didn’t believe I was.” She said with a sigh. “I’m glad you didn’t run off.” She said softly.

“I’m glad I didn’t either. But running off was never an option for me. I couldn’t live without my fiancé and our children!” He declared.

-------------------------------------------------

Martha had been in the room for about two hours when Rachel came back “Sorry.” She apologized “Callie wanted some food so I took her to the diner. Hospital food isn’t good in large amounts!” She said with a laugh “And she’s always eating Jack’s food, not that he complains surprisingly.” She said smiling, then Martha’s hand caught her eye “Oh god, Jack! You asked me to get Callie and Kiah out of the way for a while, but I didn’t know you were going to propose!” She accused him “You should have told me!” She said, glaring at him. “Congratulations, Martha.” She said, giving her a hug after she put Kiah in her pram.

Martha burst out laughing at Rachel’s behavior “By the way, when’s your big day?” She asked her friend.

“Soon, very soon actually. We decided to set it for soon, so in about a month.” She said, smiling “I love my life, I wouldn’t change a thing. Especially not Kim or Jay!” She said, fondly speaking of her fiancé and son.

Martha smiled as Tony and Luc came in, and they were quick to notice her ring, and soon everyone was congratulating her. Rachel had left and judging by the suspiciously large amount of people coming in, she’d gone to the diner to tell Colleen that the happy couple was now engaged.

“Well, I must admit I am happy that you finally found love, Jack. Even though it took you many a time for it to happen.” Tony said seriously “Luc was better than you in the romance department.” He said, speaking fondly of his youngest “But seriously, I’m happy for you two!” He said, hugging Martha “Now you’re officially going to be in the Holden clan.” He said happily.

“Congrats.” Luc said, smiling at them “I’m really happy for you both.” He said, genuinely happy.

“Thanks, Luc.” Jack said “How’s your love life going?” He asked his younger brother, who blushed.

“Ooo you hit a nerve then Jack!” Martha teased “Luc obviously doesn’t want to spill the beans!” She said, smiling at him.

------------------------------

Three and a half weeks had passed since that happy day, and Jack was out of hospital, and everyone was preparing for Rachel’s wedding day. Rachel had three bridesmaids; Martha, Sasha and Leah. Kim’s best man was Jack, and his side was Jack, Robbie and Dan. Jack was partnering Martha, Robbie was partnering Sasha and Dan was partnering Leah. Callie was the flower girl, in a matching dress of pink and the same style as the bridesmaids.

Half a week later, and Rachel was preparing herself. Martha, Sasha and Leah were all in dresses of beautiful pink, and Rachel herself wore a stunning flowing gown that she adored, and she was currently panicking “What if he doesn’t come?” She said, stressing.

“He will come.” Martha assured her “Hey, he loves you, he’s not about to let you skip away.” She said smiling to herself.

Rachel sighed, fussing over her dress and she smiled at Callie, who was a flower girl “Thanks Callie.” She said, as Callie gave her a drink of water.

Sasha smiled “Just don’t make everyone think that weddings are just stressful. Otherwise they may never want to get married.” She teased.

“Enough out of you.” Rachel said, smiling. “Alright. I’m ready.” She said, sighing as she faced the doorway.

------------------------------

Callie started walking down the aisle, Sasha headed down next, then Leah and then Martha. Finally, Rachel made her way down, all eyes were on the beautiful bride.

Rachel smiled nervously as she headed down the aisle, praying that she wouldn’t trip over her own feet. She looked at Kim, waiting down the end and she smiled at him breathlessly. She was by his side in no time at all, and she held his hand as the ceremony began.

-----------------------------------------

“Can everyone now please welcome the bridal party! “Miss Sasha Macklin, partnered by Robbie Hunter! Miss Leah Baker, partnered by her husband Dan Baker! Miss Martha Mackenzie, partnered by her fiancé, Mr. Jack Holden!” Announced the self appointed MC, Tony. Everyone smiled as the bridal party entered the room, with Martha continually looking over at the table where her two girls sat, minded by their doting grandfather and uncle. She smiled as she noticed Luc holding Kiah, and Callie sitting on Tony’s lap.

Soon it was time for the bridal waltz, and Rachel’s fear of falling was shown on her face, much to the enjoyment of everyone else.

“May I have this dance?” Jack asked Martha, extending his hand out to her.

“Of course not.” She said smiling as she took his hand anyway.

He smiled as he lead her up onto the floor “Look at them.” He said, pointing to Rachel and Kim, so obviously in love.

The only person who didn’t seem happy was Kit, she looked sour. She and Rachel hadn’t managed to talk things over and Kim had said it would be rude if he didn’t invite Kit. So she’d grudgingly come. She noticed Sasha and Jarrod dancing. She wasn’t sour about them anymore. She just wished that somebody would love her. She wanted love so badly.

Jack smiled as he twirled Callie around. Martha had been stolen by her grandfather to have a dance, so he’d grabbed his daughter to dance with. Kiah was sound asleep, under the watchful eye of her uncle Luc. He noticed Martha heading back to them and smiled “Excuse me but you weren’t invited to join in this dance.” He teased.

“I may not have been invited but I’m joining anyway.” She retorted as she held Callie’s hand as she too twirled her around.

---------------

By the end of the night, everyone had enjoyed themselves immensely. Rachel and Kim had been farewelled and now everyone was headed home.

Martha smiled as she saw Callie, fast asleep on a chair. She gently lifted her into her arms, nodding to Jack saying it was time for farewells.

Jack noticed Martha’s glances and acknowledged her. He excused himself and took a hold of the pram, guiding it over to the door where Martha stood.

Meanwhile, Rachel smiled as she kissed Kim “Goodbye Miss Armstrong, hello Mrs. Hyde!” She said, giggling as she and Kim continued their kissing.

Chapter Twenty Four

Martha smiled as she walked along the beach. Callie was dressed in her swimmers and Jack was minding Kiah for the afternoon while Martha took Callie for a swim. She made sure that Callie was swimming safely with Ric, who she got on really well with. She noticed Cassie and Macca ahead, and she gave them a wave. The bay had finally given them a chance and they’d taken it, and had been going out for six months. She was initially worried about Cassie. She was in her early twenties and Macca was in his late twenties, Cassie was 20 and Macca was 29, a nine-year age difference. She walked over to them, grinning “Hello! About time you two greeted the day. Fortunately you two don’t have any little kids to wake you up any earlier, unlike me and Jack.” She said.

Cassie glanced at Macca, a smile forming on her face “Well we will be hearing the pitter patter of little feet soon. I’m pregnant.” She said, grinning from ear to ear. “We just told Sal. She was initially worried but she’s okay with it. She knows how serious me and Macca are about making this work, so she’s fine with it.” She said.

Martha nodded “And everything still on track?” She said, her meaning clear to Macca.

“Yes, little sis. Everything’s going fine. Cassie is fine, so I’m fine. I haven’t slipped back into my old ways.” He said honestly.

“He hasn’t, Mac. You’ve got nothing to worry about.” She assured her “I’ll make sure of it. And if he does he knows that I’ll go. I have a little one to worry about no, and I can’t risk being injured in an abusive relationship. So I totally understand everyone’s worry but we’re fine. We’re going very strongly.” She said.

“That’s good, Macca. And if you do, you know exactly what will happen. You’ll be paying the price for a long time yet, Macca.” She warned her brother.

“I know, sis. I won’t risk it, not again.” He said, putting his arm around his girlfriend.

“Good.” She said, satisfied, as Callie came up, shivering slightly.

“Mummy it was cold.” She said, shaking slightly in the wind.

Martha wrapped her towel around her protectively “Sure sweetie, I bet it was. Daddy and I did warn you.” She said smiling.

Cassie smiled at her “Hello Callie.” She said kindly to the little girl.

“Hello Cassie.” She said smiling.

“We’d better go.” Martha stated, noticing her shaking daughter. “See you around, you two!” She called out, heading Callie toward the walkway.

-------------------------

“How was your swim?” Jack called as they entered the house.

“It was good daddy, but it was very cold.” She explained.

Jack grinned, “I did warn you.” He said laughing.

“I know Daddy but I wanted to swim!” She said stubbornly.

He smiled and gave Martha a kiss “Hello.” He said softly.

“Greetings.” She said smiling at him “So, tonight, everyone’s gathering at the diner after the play, they wanted to thank the actors and everything. And Colleen’s directing it, so should be funny to see how everyone rebels. She’s got people like Belle, Ric, Tilly and Luc in the play and we’ll see how Belle reacts to being ordered around.” She said, smirking about her cousin’s longtime girlfriend, Belle Taylor, daughter of millionaire Amanda Vale. “Leah managed to get out of it, and she’s offered to baby sit for us, and Colleen heard so we can’t get out of it. And she wants Callie to attend; she wants her to hand out programs. Her and Noah.” She said, sighing.

Jack groaned, “That’s just what we need. To have Callie needed to be in it, so we can’t get out of it.”

-----------------------------------

It was the night of the performance and everyone was there. Jack smiled as he saw Callie at the door. Colleen had picked her up early, and Martha had told her she had to go, even though Callie didn’t want to. Jack took a program from Callie, smiling at her. He noticed Martha standing next to her. Now he knew where she’d disappeared. He saw Colleen beginning to rush to him.

“Jack, take your seat.” She scolded him “Your daughter is fine here.” She snapped at him.

Jack groaned inwardly, and Martha found it amusing “Go on Jack.” She said sweetly.

He glared at her “I’ll get you later, Martha Mackenzie!” He warned her.

---------------------------------

The play had gone on well, and now everyone was at the after party. Callie was dozing in Martha’s lap, who was sipping champagne as she held Callie, hoping she’d sleep well.

Jack tried to get to Martha and Callie, but someone was always there, distracting him and trying to talk to him. He sighed exasperatedly as yet another person approached him.

Martha noticed her fiancé’s struggle; and laughed. He deserved it and she wasn’t going to save him. He could save himself! She smiled at him as he tried to drop her hints and she smirked, and bent her head down to be level with Callie, who was stirring. “Shh.” She said softly, as the child stirred. Martha looked at her clock and sighed. She hadn’t seen Jack all night, and now it was nearly 11PM. She slowly got up, holding the four year old tightly “Alright Callie we’re going now.” She assured her, and walked beside Jack who was talking to Madge Wilkins and Colleen “Sorry, Madge and Colleen, but I need to get Callie home.” She said, smiling at them.

“Oh, alright then.” She said, not looking happy “I expected you of all people to stay longer, Martha.” She said whinging. She turned to Jack “Now, we need you to manage the drinks.” She ordered him, pointing him towards the bar that had been set up in the diner.

Jack glared at Martha; she was meant to give him an excuse to leave “I’m sorry, Colleen, but I think I’d better go home with Martha.” He explained.

“Can’t she go home by herself?” She complained, not happy “Jack I need you to manage the drinks. I expected better spirit out of YOU Jack Holden!” She accused him.

Martha smiled “Sorry Colleen, but I think I need to take him home. Callie is getting heavy and it’s a bit of a walk to the car.” She gave him an excuse.

“Yeah.” He said, pulling Martha towards the door “Sorry Colleen but duty calls!” He declared, near dragging her out of the door.

Once they were outside Martha cracked up laughing “I expected better spirit out of YOU, Jack Holden!” She said, imitating Colleen.

“I can’t believe you were willing to leave me there!” He said, exasperated with her.

“Serves you right Jack!” She said, giggling.

Chapter Twenty Five

Jack smiled as he walked beside Martha as they headed to the car. He put his arm around her as they walked quietly; both trying not to wake Callie was who nestled in Martha’s arms.

“Tonight was perfect.” Martha said quietly.

“I totally agree.” Jack said, equally as quiet. Suddenly he frowned, looking on the grass as they headed off the beach “Hang on. Martha, stay here.” He ordered her, heading up quickly.

Martha stayed back, knowing Jack had his reasons. She tightened her grasp on Callie, before deciding it was best to wake her up in case anything was wrong, like Jack expected “Callie.” She said in her ear.

The girl’s eyes flickered open and she looked groggily at her mother “Mummy what’s going on?” She asked.

“Sweetie I need you to stand, okay. And be ready to run.” She instructed.

Callie did as she was told, and soon the pair was waiting.

Jack hurried out “Martha, I need you to stay here, alright? Stay with Belle!” He ordered running back towards the Diner.

Martha hurried to Belle’s side. The 19 year old girl was unconscious, obviously she’d been headed to the after party, and Martha knew she’d been mugged. Belle always wore nice things, and everyone knew her mother was rich. She knelt beside her, Callie staying by her mother’s side.

---------------------

Ric paced back and forth in the hospital, waiting. He’d been here for ages, and Belle was still unconscious and nobody was allowed see her, even though Ric had demanded to see her. He noticed Amanda there, crying softly to herself. He sat next to her “Belle will be okay, Amanda.” He assured her. He adored his girlfriend of two years, and couldn’t lose her. Belle was his life.

Rachel came out of Belle’s room “You can go see her.” She told them. “She’s awake, but only just. Just don’t be too rowdy.”

Ric hurried into the room, closely followed by Amanda. He sat beside her bed, as he took her hand.

Belle groggily looked at her boyfriend and mother there, her whole body was aching. They’d mugged her then beaten her up. She hadn’t wanted to give up her stuff so they’d beaten her up to get it. She felt safe, with Ric holding her hand and her mother in the room.

“Belle are you okay?” Ric asked, concerned.

“I’m okay.” She said in a weak voice.

Rachel came back in “Sorry, guys but Belle needs her sleep.” She said softly “You’re both going to have to go.” She told them.

Amanda looked at her “But I don’t want to leave my daughter after she’s just been bashed up, Rachel!” She pleaded with her “Please, let me stay.” She begged.

“Sorry, orders are orders.” She said “I wish I could but I can’t.” She told them.

Ric squeezed Belle’s hand “That’s alright I guess. We’ll be in early tomorrow.” He told Belle.

Belle nodded, as they left the room.

Ric turned at the door “And Jack’s coming in tomorrow, police business Belle.” He explained.

Belle nodded again, before crying herself to sleep.

----------------------------

Jack sighed as he headed into hospital; he was going to see Belle except it wasn’t a social visit. He was here to ask about what happened last night. He got the ok from Rachel and knocked on the door “Belle, can I come in?” He asked.

“Sure.” She said, sitting up. Ric was in the room, so was Amanda and Irene. They were all worried about her.

“How are you?” He asked her.

“I’m okay, listen thanks for finding me last night.” She said quietly. She’d been told she had been badly beaten up, and was lucky she’d been found when she did.

“Yeah, mate, thanks for that.” Ric said, looking at Jack. He was glad that his cousin was marrying such a good bloke.

“No problems, guys. Now, I need to ask you what happened last night.” He said, pulling a chair over to be beside Belle’s bed.

“Um, I was walking to the diner, for the after party, you know? Well as I was approaching, this guy came over and demanded all my stuff. I said no, and told him to get lost but he wouldn’t. I tried to shove past him but he grabbed me.” She said, a tear falling down her cheek “Then he bashed me, took my stuff and bashed me again.” She said, holding in the rest of her tears.

Jack nodded quietly “Thanks Belle. Do you have a description of your attacker?” He asked.

“He wore a balaclava, so I couldn’t really see. But I could see bits of brown hair through the light, he was wearing dark clothes.” She explained.

Jack nodded grimly “That matches our description. You’re the fourth person in Summer Bay he’s done that to.” He said with a sigh “He’s done it to three other people, and they’ve all given that description.”

“Oh god.” Irene muttered “I guess this means the town will have to be informed won’t they Jack?” She demanded of him.

“Yes, they will. I’ll get Alf to organise a meeting. Pete and I decided that if he made another attack, the public would have to be notified.” He admitted “I’ve got to get back to the station, but I’ll see you later Belle.” He said, heading out the door.

-------------------------

“As long as you remain in little groups of people at night you should be fine.” Peter Baker said, announcing it to the group that had come together. Belle was out of hospital, and everyone in the Bay was there.

Martha looked nervous, she hated the thought of some mugger around at night, and she hated feeling scared when she was alone, and she knew she and most of the other people had reasons to be scared. They had young children, how were they meant to explain this to them?

Jack looked at Martha, knowing what she was thinking. The number one case now was catching this guy, and he and Peter were the most committed, as they both had their partners and children to worry about. Jack hated knowing that while he was at work this guy could be having a go at Martha or any of the people he loved “And this guy has been targeting females. From ages 19 to 60.” He said honestly, and the gasps that were heard around the room were to be expected.

People in the room were looking at each other, guys were holding tight to their girlfriend, sons were looking at their mothers, and fathers were looking at their daughters. Everyone was now a community united. Little did they know, the mugger was already planning his next victim. And she was sitting in that very room.

Chapter Twenty Six

Martha smiled as she headed down to the beach with Callie. She was dressed normally, in shorts and a top but Callie was in her swimmers. It had been nearly a month since Belle was mugged so everything was normal and everyone thought the guy had given up. She gave a sigh as her feet hit the warm sand; she was going to enjoy her day out with Callie. Since Kiah was nearly a year old now, they were preparing for her birthday already, and since Callie’s birthday was a month after Kiah’s, they decided they needed to do something special for both girls, as it was their first birthday each as a member of the Holden/Mackenzie/Stewart clan. She noticed Kim down there and gave him a wave, as he hurried over to her.

“Mac, you know you shouldn’t be out here alone!” He accused her “It may have been a month but Jack said this guy is smart and he could attack at any time.” He said, looking around. Since the incident, all the guys in the bay had been on edge, and some of the girls were extra cautious, but there were a few who didn’t really pay attention to extra security until dark. People like Martha, Rachel and Tasha. But the likes of Jack, Kim and Robbie were doing their best to tell them that they needed to be extra cautious and not to fight if anyone tried to take their stuff.

Martha sighed “Kim, nothing’s going to happen in broad daylight.” She said “Seriously, who’d attack someone in a public area in broad daylight?” She asked him.

“Someone who’s desperate.” He answered “Are you and Callie swimming?” He asked her.

“No, just Callie.” She answered; glad they were off that topic. “I’m not in a swimming mood.” She said warily “Callie.” She said, turning to the child. “A short swim. I want to head home soon, I’ve got to make everyone dinner.” She said firmly, knowing that Callie would try to push it but Martha refused to budge. Jack had suggested she take Callie for a swim so he’d get some time with Kiah, whom he’d barely had any time alone with since the accident. Martha sighed, lying on the beach, deciding to give Callie half an hour.

--------------------------

Half an hour later, Callie obediently got out of the water and grabbed her towel, smiling at her mum “Mummy, can we go to the diner?” She said sweetly. The sun was slowly starting to go down, and Kim was still with Martha.

“Sure, we’ll go to the diner.” She said, smiling at her eager child “Cya Kim.” She said, waving to him as she prepared to go. “Have a nice night with Rachel.” She said, smiling at him.

“Want me to walk you to your car?” He asked her.

“No, I’m fine Kim don’t worry.” She assured him “The car’s at the diner. But since you’re meeting Rachel at Jack’s in an hour I’ll see you there.” She said, waving him one final time before heading up to the diner with Callie.

“Grandpa!” Callie called as she ran to him, standing outside the diner.

“Callie!” He called out, engulfing her in a bear hug “Burgh you’re all wet!” He said, laughing at the imprint on his shirt.

Callie laughed at him “Grandpa it’s not that bad.”

Martha saw the Hunter clan inside and smiled at them “Hello.” She greeted them.

Soon the conversation turned to Colleen’s latest drama, trying to find a man. In no time flat Martha realised that she’d been there for forty five minutes “Sorry guys but me and Callie have to head home.” She said, waving goodbye to them.

She and Callie headed out; it was dark now, the time being seven thirty. Martha smiled, knowing that Jack would have started cooking by now. She looked up when she heard a voice call out to her, and she stood frozen when she saw who it was. She instinctively grabbed Callie, trying to run but he was too quick. She fought him, “Callie GO!” She screamed at her. She noticed her run and then began to try to fend him long enough to run. But it seemed he’d had enough of her stalling. In no time flat, she was lying flat on the ground, unconscious, badly beaten and bruised.

-----------------------------------

Callie did exactly as her mother told her to; she ran all the way to the diner, and ran inside, screaming out.

Kim leapt out of his chair “Callie what’s wrong?!” He asked, panicking.

“S-some gu-uy.” She stuttered, and looks were exchanged in the diner before everyone ran out, searching for Martha.

Soon she was found, and was heading home in an ambulance, with Beth soothing a hysterical Callie. She’d seen a glimpse of her mother, and she was pretty badly beaten up. Callie heard running feet, not seeing anything and suddenly felt strong arms grasp her tightly around her waist and felt her hoisted into someone’s safe arms. She turned and saw her grandpa, and she noticed his face. It was deadly white. She clung to him as they rushed to his car, and to the hospital.

Jack laughed as he stood, at home with Sasha and Kit. He looked at his watch “Where is Martha?” He wondered out loud, with Sasha shrugging.

“You know Martha, probably got caught chatting to someone. That’s how it is in Summer Bay.” She said laughing to herself “Everyone’s always chatting!” She said, grinning.

The phone suddenly rang and Jack picked it up, and soon his facial expression changed from one of happiness to one of fear and dread. He grabbed his keys “Sasha, come with me. Kit, can you mind Kiah?” He asked quickly, Kit nodding and Sasha hurrying to the car without questions. Soon they were speeding towards the hospital.

At the hospital, Tony was rocking Callie backwards and forth in his arms, whispering soothing words to her. She’d been hysterical but she was starting to calm down now, and he knew that was a good thing. She’d had an awful shock. He heard a shaky voice “Callie!” He turned to see Jack heading toward them at a fast pace. He felt Callie pull herself from his arms and launch herself at her father.

Jack looked at Callie, in her swimmers “Dad, can you go get her some clothes?” He asked, wrapping his arms tightly around Callie. His father nodded, heading off. Jack kissed Callie’s head, sighing. She couldn’t be taken away from him and their daughters. She just couldn’t.

He noticed Rachel head out, looking nervous and glum “Rachel what is it!” He urged.

Rachel hesitated “Jack, I won’t lie to you. She’s critical. And another unfortunate part is that she may not wake up.” She said quietly. “There’s a 50% chance she’ll wake up, and unfortunately the chance she won’t outweighs the chance she will. I’m sorry Jack.” She said softly.

Jack sat, stunned. His brain was refusing to register the fact that his fiancé may never wake up. She couldn’t leave them, not now not ever. But Jack knew she could very well, and all because of this moron. He looked at Rachel “Can I see her?” He asked.

Rachel sighed “Not yet, Jack. Doctors are still with her, I came out to tell you.” She said softly. She looked around the room; everyone looked extremely saddened, and pained, unable to register the sickening truth.

----------------------------

It had been four days since Martha had been hospitalised and there was still no change in her condition. Jack hadn’t returned to work, and Callie wasn’t preparing for school like planned. She’d stubbornly refused to attend school until her mum was okay, and Jack understood. Now everyone was super cautious. No-one was going out without someone accompanying them, and everyone was making sure that everything was locked. People no longer walked everywhere, they drove. The change in the town was amazing, everyone had banded together, everyone security conscious and everyone intending on catching this creep.

Jack sat beside Martha’s bedside “Please wake up Martha, just please wake up.” He asked her softly.

Chapter Twenty Eight

Rachel sighed as she looked at Jack. She often saw heartbroken partners but never had her heart been filled with such sorrow for the victim’s family. The bashing was two weeks ago, and Martha’s condition hadn’t changed. She knew that people around the hospital were nearly giving up hope; Martha’s injuries had been devastating, leaving her in a critical condition for a week. Now, she’s been relatively stable for about a week and the hospital was hoping that she’d come out of it, be able to hold her beautiful children again, and to have her fiancé’s arms wrapped around her. Jack had been struck hard, but Callie had been struck as hard, or if possible, even harder. She missed her mother, often crying herself to sleep. Jack spent most of his time at the hospital, and hadn’t gone to work since the accident. Rachel looked at Martha’s monitors and she gasped. She couldn’t be. She quickly double checked her sheet then rushed over to the monitor. A smile gradually came over her face, as she kept on checking the sheet.

“What’s going on?” A tired Jack asked, now wide awake “Is she okay?” He asked frantically.

“Jack, her BP’s rising, which is a good sign. I think she may be nearly ready to come back to us.” She said, grinning “These are all good signs. Hopefully within the next thing we see is movement.” She said excitedly.

Jack looked at Rachel in near disbelief. He was thrilled at the thought of Martha finally being okay, and that he’d finally be able to hold her in his arms again, and that she’d be able to see Callie and Kiah again, her two beloved children.

-------------------------------------

It was two days since her improvement, and nothing else had happened since. Jack was disappointed; he wanted Martha back so bad. He sighed as he rubbed her hand softly, wishing for the millionth time that she’d wake up, that she’d come back to him. He stopped, a look of disbelief coming across his face. She was moving, but only very slightly.

“Oh my god.” He heard a voice behind him, whirling around to see Rachel behind him.

“I think she’s going to wake up Jack.” She whispered excitedly, as she hurried beside him “Martha, come on please wake up for me!” She nearly begged.

Jack looked on in awe as he saw Martha’s eyelid’s flutter, but they closed again. He grinned, as he watched Rachel test all her signs.

“Hopefully she’ll wake up soon, Jack.” She said, smiling. She was relieved that the news she was able to deliver was good news, not bad news. She hated delivering bad news; she especially hated delivering bad news. She’d delivered it to Brad when he’d learnt of Emily’s cancer, but her loathing of the news had turned to joy when Emily had been announced into remission. She heard a groan from Martha, as she moved slowly on the bed “Martha, come on, it’s Rachel, I’m here and Jack’s here.” She said, as she finally saw Martha’s eyelids open, and stay open.

Jack looked on joyously, unable to believe that his fiancé was finally awake and that everything would be okay.

----------------------------------------

Tony watched Callie as she sat, watching a movie. He knew she wasn’t taking any of it in, she’d been like this since Martha’s accident, it had hit her hard. He looked up at the phone and answered it, and a smile beamed across his face “Callie, guess what? Mummy’s awake!” He said, joyously.

Callie turned, surprised “Mummy’s awake?” She said, her robotic expression turning to one of joy “Really, grandpa?” She asked.

“Yes, now come on let’s go.”

-----------------------------------------

Soon they were rushing up and Callie balked outside the door but her wish to see her mum overruled and she burst through the door.

There was Martha, looking groggy but nevertheless awake. She smiled groggily at Callie, who stood back.

Jack noticed this and picked up Callie, whilst Tony disappeared. Jack approached the bed, Callie in arms “Callie, its okay.”

She hesitantly reached her hand out, and held Martha’s hand.

Martha smiled at Callie; slowly she was getting her energy back.

After she’d been there for twenty minutes, Tony came back “I’m sure you two would like some time to yourselves.” He said, smiling at the happy couple as he headed out with Callie.

Jack smiled at Martha was he lay on the bed next to her, she was leaning most of her weight on him “You know, I hated the thought of anything happening to you.” He said softly, leaning down and kissing the top of her head.

She smiled “Jack, did you catch him?” She asked, her voice wavering.

“No, we haven’t. Work is keeping me up to date on what’s happening, Callie hasn’t let me out of her sight since your accident. She’s been like a robot since the accident, not really talking much. She’s really affected by what she saw. What do you remember?” He asked, not sure he wanted to hear her answer.

“I remember this guy coming at me, bashing me. I remember screaming at Callie to run. I didn’t care about my safety, I only cared about hers.” She said softly.

Jack smiled as he moved her hair behind her ear “I wish I’d been there. Until this guy is caught I want you and the girls to be always around a group of people, preferably with people like Kim and Rachel, or Jarrod and Sasha.” He said seriously. “Rachel said you can be discharged soon, so I want you to be safe. I don’t want this to happen again. And now everyone is being super security cautious. Nobody is allowed out alone, and in minimum 3-4 people in a group. The main thing is that you’re safe, now.” He added.

-----------------------

It had been a week since the bashing and Martha was allowed home provided she stayed calm and settled, and relaxed. She sighed as she looked around. She was happy to be home.

“Jack?” Martha asked.

“Yes?” He looked at her.

“I love you.” She said softly.

Chapter Twenty Eight

Rachel smiled as she gently pushed the pram containing her one and a half year old son along the path siding the beach. Days had passed since Martha’s attack, and there were groups of men everywhere, watching every woman who passed by, making sure she was safe. There had been five attacks, all of them being on a woman. Now, women went everywhere after 6PM accompanied by a man, or by a few women. It was in the hope that this mugger would get caught. She smiled as she pushed Jaidyn beside Martha, who sat holding Kiah on a seat “Hey.” She said, smiling at her.

Martha turned, surprised “Oh hey Rach!” She said, greeting her friend “How are you?” She asked.

“I’m great, how are you after the attack? Jack letting you out after dark?” She asked her friend.

She sighed “Still the same, over-protective Jack as always. But at least I know now that I’m never too safe, not with this idiot around. Fortunately I was able to give a good description when I remembered.” She said, smiling. After the incident, Jack had asked her to remember everything she could, and she had done her best and had finally managed to give a description.

Rachel smiled “Well, I best be off.” She said smiling at her, before heading off with Jaidyn.

Martha waved her friend goodbye, and jumped slightly when her phone rang “Hey Beth.” She greeted her, and then she got a surprise, before putting Kiah in her pram and heading off “Rachel wait!” She yelled out “Come quick!”

Rachel whirled around, before speeding back to Martha, which was pretty good considering she had a pram to push along “What’s up?” She asked.

“There’s been a group bashing.” She said grimly “Eight people have been bashed: Kim, Lucas, Cassie, Sally, Jack, Callie, Tasha and Irene.” She said “I can’t believe he attacked so many people, how did he do it I don’t know but we’ve got to get to the hospital. But apparently, there was more than one mugger, and some have been bashed others have been stabbed. So we’ve got to hurry.” She said, before speeding towards her car.

---------------------

Martha sped along, Rachel beside her and Kiah and Jaidyn in the back. They’d managed to put Jaidyn in Callie’s seat, which was at Noah’s for some strange reason. She pulled in at the hospital, grabbed the pram and her daughters from the backseat and hurried in “What’s going on?” She shot out, as she headed into emergency.

Tony was there, and he was visibly relieved to see his daughter-in-law to be, and his granddaughter all safe and sound. He was worried when nobody had been able to contact Martha and Kiah. “We’re not sure. Kim, Lucas, Jack, Ric and Irene were stabbed, some worse than others. Sally, Cassie and Callie were fortunately spared of stabbings. Apparently, Jack, Ric and Irene all tried to protect Callie from being stabbed, them getting stabbed instead. Belle managed to get free of him and get help, which saved the other three. I’m just relieved you guys are okay. Callie has some nasty bruising, but nothing too bad. Sally’s got some cuts where she hit the ground and Cassie’s relatively unharmed, even though she pulled Callie out of harm’s way. Jack was stabbed, but he still managed to save Callie.”

Martha looked shaken at the thought of the dramas that were unfolding in front of her “I can’t believe it.” She said softly “Can we see any of them?” She asked frantically. She was desperate to see her daughter and her fiancé.

Rachel rushed over to them “Callie, Lucas, Jack and Kim are in room 14, and the other four are in room 15. So let’s go in and see them.” She said, hurrying into room 14 with Jaidyn in her arms.

Martha rushed in, Kiah in the pram, gasping as she saw the wounded. She couldn’t believe the guts of this guy, attacking eight people in broad daylight. She noticed that Callie was lying in Jack’s bed, Jack having his arm around her. Jack had a bandage around his arm, and some nasty guts and bruises. Callie seemed relatively alright. She sat on the bed, rocking the pram with her practiced foot as she pulled Callie into her lap as she looked around. Tony was by an unconscious Lucas’ bedside, and Rachel was by a semi-conscious Kim’s bedside. “Jack are you alright?” She asked, worried about her fiancé’s heath.

“I’m fine.” Came the drowsy reply “I’ll be in here for a few days, but nothing extremely major. Don’t worry, Mac, I’m fine.” He assured her.

Callie clung to her mother; relieved she was here and she wasn’t out there “It was so scary mummy.” She whispered softly.

Martha stroked Callie’s hair “It’s alright sweetie, mummy’s here now and that madman won’t hurt you now.” She said softly.

Jack groaned loudly in pain as he shifted, causing Martha’s concern.

“Jack, what’s wrong?” She asked, alarmed.

“My stomach.” He groaned in pain, but she knew. She pulled his sheets down, which he’d been holding against his stomach, to reveal a discoloured stomach region, proving that he was bleeding inside.

“Jack, you’re bleeding!” She exclaimed, causing Rachel to rush over.

“Jack, you’re going to need to get that checked out.” Rachel said, looking at him.

“Rachel what’s wrong?” Asked a panicked Martha.

“I think its internal bleeding, Jack we’re going to have to get you into surgery.” She said, before hurrying Martha and Callie off the bed and getting help in, before whisking Jack out of the room.

Martha held back a cry as she watched him being taken away from her, suddenly she felt someone put a comforting arm around her shoulder, she turned and realised that it was Tony.

“He’ll be alright love. He wouldn’t leave you and the girls.” He tried to assure her.

“Tony he doesn’t really have a choice if he’s badly injured.” She said, tears flowing down her cheeks. She was openly worried about her fiancé’s health “Tony when we are ever going to have good news?” She whispered.

“You’ve had a fair amount of good news, you just didn’t see it. Sure you’ve had your accidents, but look. You’ve got two beautiful daughters, you’re in a happy union, what more could you ask for? Life has given you many things to be grateful for, Martha. You just have to take them.” He said simply.

She noticed Rachel approaching her “Rach what’s going on?” She said to her friend “C’mon, Rach, tell me!” She pleaded with her.

“Jack has a large bleed; he was obviously bashed pretty heavily in his stomach which has caused extensive damage to his liver. We’re waiting for the blood bank to give us some more blood, but until then, we don’t know.” She said softly “And Jack’s blood type is pretty rare, and his liver may be irreparable. Martha, you need to know there is a good chance Jack won’t make it. If he needs a new liver and new blood, who knows if he’ll make it or not.” She said slowly, giving Martha time to take in the news. “Unfortunately, it seems that Jack, Irene and Ric’s lives are hanging in the balance.” She said softly “Nobody knows if they will make it through the night, their injuries are huge. I wish I had better news to give.” She said softly.

Martha stopped her “Who has the biggest chance of death? Rachel I need to know!” She demanded.

Rachel sighed “Martha, Jack has those chances. He has a 35% chance of survival.” She said softly “His injuries weren’t though to be that severe, but with his internal bleeding now he’s critical.” She said with a sigh “I wish I had better news to give.” She said, touching Martha’s shoulder before heading out the door.

Martha and Tony stood still; taking in the news. Martha just stood there stunned, unable to believe that her fiancé might not make it through the night. She noticed her granddad at the door, and tears refilled in her eyes “He might not make it, granddad. He might not make it.” She sobbed into her grandfather’s chest, as he wrapped his arms around her.

Chapter Twenty Nine

Martha stood, stunned. She refused to believe the news, no she couldn’t. Yet she knew in her heart it was true.

Jack was dead.

He’d lost too much blood, his brain having been deprived of oxygen for too long. She was facing life as a single mother to her two daughters, and she wasn’t looking forward to that. It had been three hours since that failed operation, she had been asked if Jack was a donor and she knew he was so she consented, and even though it pained her she knew that she had to raise Callie and Kiah the way Jack would have wanted her to. She felt Callie’s hand slide into hers.

“When’s daddy coming back?” She asked, confused as to where her dad was.

“Daddy won’t be coming back sweetie, but you’ll see him again, one day, a long time from now.” She whispered softly as she crouched down to be at Callie’s level “He’ll be watching you every day, making sure you stay safe and that you’re nice to Kiah and you share with her.” She said, still in a quiet tone “Remember, that you’re daddy loves you, never forget that Callie.” She said, wrapping her arms around the four year old. This was tragic news for her to deliver, as Callie’s birthday was in three weeks. “We’ll get through this, sweetheart.” She said, cradling her daughter close.

------------------------

It was the day of Jack’s funeral, and Martha knew Jack wanted to be cremated, and his ashes put into the sea. She sighed as she walked, holding the vase in hand, Callie by her side. She tipped the ashes into the water, feeling the unbearable pain in her heart but knowing she had to remain strong, for Callie and Kiah’s sakes. She felt Alf’s hand on her shoulder.

“It’ll get easier, love.” He said quietly, encouraging his granddaughter, knowing that when you’re 23 and facing life as a single mother, it’s hard.

“I hope it will, granddad. It couldn’t get any harder.”

----------------------

Three weeks had passed since Jack’s funeral, and Calliope’s party was going. It was just a general party, with the five year old playing games with family and friends, including Noah and Ella, to name a few.

Martha smiled as she watched the kids dance along to songs, she knew Callie was still affected by Jack’s passing but she knew Callie was also trying to be strong. Just like her mother was. Martha knew Jack was her soul mate, so she was never going to marry or fall in love and she was going to make sure of it. She’d bought herself her own wedding ring, the one Jack had picked out for her. She didn’t care if she wasn’t legally married; she was as good as married to him. He was the second lover removed from her life and he was going to be the last. She was never going to find love; she couldn’t deal with the pain. She didn’t want Callie and Kiah to have to have a stepfather, knowing that Callie especially would have trouble accepting another father figure. She called Callie over.

“Yes, mummy?” Asked the beautiful child.

“Daddy would be so proud of you today, sweetie. Do a dance for him.” She said softly, kissing her on the cheek.

Two months had passed since the time of the funeral. Kiah had celebrated her first birthday, but it was one her father never got to see. Jack would have loved to see his daughters grow up but he never would.

Martha sighed as she looked at the ring on her hand. She’d settled well into the life of a single mother, running her household as smoothly as she would have if Jack was there with her. There were times when she needed help, so she’d ask. She’d had people ask her out, but she’d always say she was married, so no. She moved her ring around her finger, smiling to the sky “I love you Jack, and I always will.” She said, bringing her hand to her mouth, and kissing the ring softly “You always wanted me to wear this ring, so I will, and I’ll proudly call myself you’re wife. It’s strange, we were meant to be married last night, and even though we weren’t I’ll still call you my husband.” She said quietly, looking at the sky

Martha smiled as she headed back to the house. She saw Tony leave as he saw her coming, smiling at her. Tony often minded his granddaughters; he called Martha his daughter so it didn’t really matter. Lucas had recovered, so had everybody else mainly. Kim was still pretty badly injured, needing rehab but Rachel was there, by his side all the time, aiding his recovery and encouraging her eternally. She smiled as she headed in, and grabbed Kiah in her arms “So, Kiah-Bea, what do you say to some dinner, hey sweetie?” She said, smiling at her one-year-old daughter. She prepared dinner for Kiah, sitting her down and she started cooking Callie her dinner of chicken nuggets and chips. It was a dinner that had always been Callie’s favourite, and she always loved it. She looked up as Callie came in.

“Mummy, everyone else’s daddy’s are with them at school, when’s daddy coming back I miss him.” She said, sniffing.

“Sweetie, you won’t see daddy for a very long time.” She said softly “But you have to be strong and remember that whenever you want to talk, daddy will listen. Whenever you want to cry, daddy will comfort you. Whenever you need something sorted, daddy will sort it for you. Just look up at the sky and talk. Say whatever you want, and daddy will know and he’ll help you, sweetie.” She said, cradling her daughter in her arms “That’s what mummy does, she talks to daddy when she’s feeling down. Suddenly she felt horribly sick and she rushed to the bathroom and groaned as it passed, then came again. She wondered what she was going to do; she was pregnant with another child, four months to be exact. She’d found out a month and a half ago, and she wondered how she’d do. She was hoping for a boy, but she’d be happy with either. She’d told Tony, and he was ecstatic. She’d chosen the names, Rory Jack Holden for a boy, and Jasmyn Louisa Holden for a girl. By the time the baby was born, Callie would be six and Kiah would be two, she’d be stretched but she wouldn’t give up the chance of having another of Jack’s children for the world.

NEXT TIME: How will the bay react to news of another baby Holden?

Chapter Thirty

Martha smiled as she headed into the diner, with no children by her sides. Tony had asked to spend the day with them, as it was his birthday. Martha had agreed, and said she’d be by later for his party, which, like all the parties in the bay, was being held at Noah’s Bar. Her baby bump was now noticeable, and she noticed several people look at her twice. She walked over to Irene “Can I have a juice to go please Irene?” She asked.

“Sure love. How are you going?” She asked, the whole bay was worried about Martha and how she was dealing.

“I’m fine, and I’ve got some good news I might as well start sharing around. I’m four months pregnant.” She said, smiling.

“That’s great darl!” She said enthusiastically “Well, if ya need a hand with Callie and Kiah, feel free to ask me.” She offered, heading off to get the juice.

“Thanks Irene.” She said, paying her as she came back “Just don’t tell Colleen.” She whispered.

“Why love?” She said, holding in a laugh.

“I’d like to tell my friends myself, not have her tell Madge Wilkins and the whole bay knows before I’ve told them. It’d be easier that way, but less personal.” She said, smiling.

“I understand no worries girlie.” She said, handing over the juice and heading off “Congrats, by the way.” She said.

------------------------

It was now midday, and the bay knew, so Martha had told Colleen last. She’d rung Madge; only to find that Madge already knew so she was rather upset that she hadn’t been one of the first Martha came to. She’d been rude and ignoring her all day, sulking at the fact that Martha told other people before her, and everyone thought it was hilarious. Martha headed into the diner, and tried not to laugh as she saw Colleen glare at her, before being ordered back into the kitchen by Leah.

“Sorry about her.” Leah apologised for her employee “You know how she gets. And I understand that you want to keep your pregnancy to yourself, and tell whoever you want.” She said, smiling. She and Dan had finally managed to have a child with IVF, and they had a young daughter, Maria.

“It’s alright Leah; I guess I probably deserved it.” She said, smiling “After all I did tell her about my last-”

“Young ones these days, so rude and unbelievable. Nobody respects us older more mature people these days.” Colleen grumbled, being heard by Martha.

“I’m sorry Colleen but I came to the diner after I told everyone, I’m sorry.” She apologised, hiding her smile as Colleen huffed and served a table angrily “I’ve really upset her.” She said, smirking “Poor you, having to work with her!” She said laughing.

Leah smiled “Yeah, well, I better get back to it.” She said, before heading back into the kitchen.

Martha headed to a seat, sitting herself down with a sigh, fondly caressing her baby bump. She was hoping for a son, a son that Jack would have wanted. She and Jack had talked of boy names when she was pregnant with Kiah, and Jack’s favourite was Rory, Rory Jack Holden they’d decided. And a girl, they’d decided Jasmyn Louisa Holden. She looked up when she saw someone approach.

“Is it okay if I sit?” Lucas asked, unsure “You just seem deep in thought and I didn’t think you’d want to be interrupted, that’s all.” He said, smiling at his sister-in-law.

“It’s fine Luc.” She said, smiling.

“Congrats on the baby by the way. Any chance I’ll know of names?” He asked, looking hopeful.

“Since you’re Jack’s brother I may as well. For a girl, it’s Jasmyn Louisa Holden, for a boy it’s Rory Jack Holden. Jack and I picked those names when I was pregnant with Kiah, and said we’d use them for future children too. Except I didn’t expect to be pregnant again so soon.” She said with a chuckle “But I wouldn’t send this baby back for the world.” She said softly.

------------------------

Martha smiled as she pulled her top down, she’d just had an ultrasound and she was thrilled. She was having a baby boy, and she only wished Jack could see this precious moment. She headed out of the room, where Alf, Tony and Lucas were waiting “Want to know the gender?” She said, smiling.

“C’mon Mac just tell us, please. We’re dying to know if you’re having my niece or nephew.” Luc begged.

“Fine, I’m having a baby boy. So I’m carrying Rory Jack Holden.” She said, rubbing her stomach happily “I’m thrilled. I was hoping for a boy, I’m sure Jack would be happy that he had a son, and I know that Rory will be looking for his uncle and grandfather to help, especially do some baby-sitting duties.” Martha said laughing.

They laughed along with her, knowing all too well that Martha was very much a hands on mother.

“Congrats again.” Luc said softly “Jack would be thrilled either way, Mac, and most of all he’d be proud of you.” He said, giving her a hug.

--Note—I’m speeding up the time, mainly because I want this baby born. So next chapter will be in a year, when the baby is five and a half months old, Kiah is two and Callie is six. I know I speed up time but I dislike playing pregnancies, as I love kids. Lol. Don’t worry, I have something planned.

Next chapter up very soon!
