ChapterThirtyFour:

Sally showed Rocco around the house. “If you need anything, just let me know okay, anything at all.”

“Sure,” said Rocco a little uncomfortable.

“So how is Nina doing? Rachel told me what happened.” Sally asked him.

“She’s okay I guess, I think she was a bit sick that’s all.” He replied. “I don’t really know much about it.”

There was a knock at the door and Matilda came in quietly.

“Hi Sally,” she said. “Is Ric around?”

“Sorry Matilda, Ric’s down at the beach. Is it something important?”

‘Oh no not really,” Matilda replied. “I just came to give him back this DVD that he lent me. Hi Rocco. What are you doing here?”

“Oh Rocco’s going to be staying here for a while.” Sally answered. ‘it’s a lot safer than where he was staying before.”

“Oh okay.” Said Matilda.

“Listen I’m just going to hang the washing… you can stay if you like Maddie, keep Rocco company or something?” Sally said as she disappeared outside.

Rocco and Matilda looked at each other awkwardly. “Are you feeling better?” she asked him.

“Yeah, still a bit sore though.” He said rubbing his ribs. “Did you hear about Nina?”

“No??” said Matilda. “Why what happened?”

“I’m not really sure but she was in hospital last night…”

“Oh my god, I have to go and see her!”

“Wait, Matilda!” Rocco said grabbing her arm. “She was discharged this morning just before I was. She could be anywhere.”

Rocco was still holding onto Matilda when Ric walked in.

“What’s going on?” he asked them.

“Nothing,’ Matilda replied hastily taking her arm back. “I just came around to drop off that DVD you lent me. I didn’t know Rocco was staying here.”

“Right. Listen, Maddie.” Ric said casually. “I’m meeting up with Lucas later at the diner, do you want to come?”

Matilda shook her head. “Maybe Ric. I’m not sure. I really want to find Nina and talk to her.”

Ric grinned. “Look if you make it then you make it, but if you don’t…”

“Thanks Ric. I will definitely try.” She said to him. “I’ll see you guys later.” She waved them goodbye and walked out the door.

Ric had some second thoughts. ‘Listen, I might head out again,” he said to Rocco. ‘If Sal asks, could you just let her know?”

Rocco nodded as Ric ran out the door.

Jack walked into the police station smiling. All he could think about was last night with Martha. He knew he was lucky to have a girl like her.

“So I take it your out of the dog box Holden?” Harper asked as Jack signed in.

“As a matter of fact Senior, I think Martha has thrown the dog box away” Jack laughed.

Both of the officers were standing around laughing when a man walked through the doors of the police station and approached them. He was dressed in a white polo shirt and jeans and his short blonde hair was neatly styled. He was clean shaven and had nice blue eyes. Jack was instantly reminded of Peter Baker. “Gidday,” he said walking up beside Jack. “I was wondering if Darren McGrath was around?”

“Can we help you with anything?” Jack asked.

The guy raised his eyebrows. “Oh, I’m Nathan Owens. Umm, I was just in the area and I thought I’d stop by and visit my old boss.”

“Nathan, haven’t seen you around here for a while,” said Harper. “Are you still at CID?”

“Yeah,” Nathan chuckled. “I’m actually working on a big case at the moment.”

“I’ll see what Darren’s up to.” Harper said. He went to McGrath’s office to get him. When they came out McGrath shook the guy’s hand ecstatically. “Gidday Nato,” he exclaimed. “How’s things?”

“Yeah, good.” Nathan replied. “Well as good as can be I guess. Is that okay if we talk in private?’

“Sure. You know Richie told me about how you got your promotion. That’s some good work you did on the Johns case,” said McGrath.

“I can’t take all the credit for that, Richie did some of the work,” he laughed. “But you know, they didn’t make me Detective Sergeant for nothing.”

“My office is right through here, we can talk there.”

When Nathan had finally gone. McGrath called Jack into his office.

“Is everything all right sir?” Jack asked him.

“Holden, I’m going to get straight to the point,” he said. “I put you in charge of the diner robbery over Lara, and I’m still yet to see any leads. Then yesterday, I find out that you’ve been disclosing information about Nina Roger’s criminal record to members of the public. You know that she is entitled to her privacy. She could take action against us you know?”

“I thought I should let a couple of people know what she’s about,” Jack argued. “She’s becoming quite close with Matilda, and I just don’t want to see her do anything stupid.”

“The point is Jack, that it wasn’t your place to disclose that information. Yes, someone like Nina is obliged to tell employers, schools and any other institutions about her past, but let her keep her personal life personal.” McGrath sat back in his chair. “This case at the hospital with the missing drugs… I’m giving you sole charge. You have to prove that you deserve that Detective’s promotion… Not just to me… the superintendent is paying close attention to this as well. You need to bring in your A game in from now on Jack, or I will be giving you a formal warning.”

Jack was stunned at what he had just heard. He knew that he had other things on his mind lately, but he thought McGrath was being a bit hard on him. “Sir, I was chasing up some different leads. I still think that Nina and Jake are linked to everything that’s happened.”

McGrath took a deep breath. “Jack, how about this. We all know Johnny Cooper is calling the shots around here. How about you get some evidence and bring HIM in for questioning. That seems to be the only lead that you haven’t followed up.”

Jack was angry, but he knew he couldn’t answer back to McGrath. They guy was the boss. “Alright, I’ll bring in Johnny Cooper then.”

Poor Jack, but I'm sure he'llget over it Hmm boys names beginning with R...Ryan, Ralf, Roger, just a few for Mattie to pick from Update soon, I have to keep my eyes peeled for when the next 1 is, you update so fast lol, more soon please

^Aww, sorry for updating fast... But all these ideas keep coming into my head... then when i do want to write... they float away and i can't even remember them...

I just remembered that Jack still has to "crack".

Jake helped Nina into the car. “I’m okay” she told him. “Stop fussing, you always do this…”

“I do it because I happen to care” he snapped at her. “Sorry, it’s just it’s been a while since I’ve seen you unconscious that’s all. I was a little scared. As big brothers should be.”

Nina smiled. “I’m fine! But you have a lot of explaining to do!”

“Yeah, well it wasn’t easy. I tell you that” he said to her. “It’s only now that I’ve started to realise how annoying coppers are. But I didn’t leave their sight and neither did you so we’re in the clear.”

Nina realised what Jake had done. “You got Rocco to do it for you? Didn’t you?”

Jake nodded grimly. “It was the only way. He got everything so it wasn’t a problem. I swiped the nurses keys and went in to see him while you were in the bathroom. When everyone was distracted with you… I guess that’s when he went and did it.”

“How did you get him to do it? He’s trying to go straight, why would he help you anyway?” Nina asked.

“I told him Johnny would hurt you if we didn’t get the job done. With the cops being there it was impossible. So, technically he did it for you.”

Jake pulled up at Johnny’s place. “Don’t say anything about Rocco,” he told his sister. “I’ve got Johnny where I want him now. YOU just have to stick to your part of the plan. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Nina looked worryingly at him. “What makes you think I won’t stick to the plan?”

“Because you’re falling kiddo, you’re falling hard and you’re falling fast.”

Johnny grinned when he saw Jake and Nina enter the room. “Took your time” he scowled.

“Look, how long is this going to go on?” Jake asked him. ‘Tell us the plan for the big job, so that this time NOTHING can go wrong.”

Johnny shook his head. “Need to know basis mate. How are you doing?” he asked Nina.

“Fine.” She said quietly.

Johnny had been expecting more of a response from her. “Do you know where Rocco is?”

“Why do you care?” she asked him.

“I don’t CARE.” He snapped. “I just want to know where he is?”

“I don’t know? I didn’t see him. I was busy being hooked up to a machine to help me breathe last night.”

“What?” exclaimed Johnny. “What happened?”

Jake butted in between them. “I might have forgotten to mention that Nina had a medical emergency last night.”

“And you didn’t tell me because?” Johnny yelled.

“Because I didn’t think it mattered. Look she’s fine. Just forget about it. Forget about Rocco as well. The kid is causing too much trouble.”

“I can’t forget about my brother. He’s in this as much as your sister is.”

“Leave the kid alone” Jake argued. “He wants out so let him start a new life.”

Jake had hit a pressure point in Johnny’s mind. ‘Do you really expect me to let Rocco start a new life – without ME?” he yelled. “I practically raised him. We’re blood, and he is never going to get me out of his life! I will do whatever it takes to make sure about that!”

Jake stared at him. “I think I have you pretty much figured out Johnny.” He said coldly. “When you’re ready to fill me on the job, give me call. Until then… stay away from the both of us.”
