All That You Can't Leave Behind

Rory is a nice name. Although it reminds me of Rory from Gilmore Girls...

Yet again.... another chapter. I am becoming a fan fic junkie...

ChapterThirtySeven:

Ric finally caught up to Matilda down the road. ‘Maddie! Wait up!” he shouted.

She stopped and waited for him. “What’s up Ric?” she asked.

“Look I know lately we haven’t seen much of each other.” He apologised. “It’s just taking me a bit of time to get my head around the Cassie and Macca thing. I’m a guy, and when I’m hurting… I tend to want to be alone.”

“It’s okay Ric, I can understand how you must feel,” she said sadly.

“Maddie, you can still talk to me, you know. If there’s something going on that you want to talk about…” They kept walking as they talked.

“I’m just worried about Nina that’s all. There’s some stuff she’s not telling me, and I respect that… but… I can’t help but think that she’s in some sort of trouble.” Matilda brushed her hair out of her face. “Am I being dramatic?” she asked.

“No, I don’t think so…” he said quietly.

Matilda took a deep breath. “Do you sometimes wish that you could erase your past? I mean to me it seems that if you try and change who you are, your past is the only thing stopping you.”

“Sometimes… when I think of my dad and stuff like that.” Ric replied. ‘I guess you have to kind of look at it like you learn from your experiences type thing. I mean, I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t grow and learn from what I’ve done in my past. When you say that your past is the only thing stopping you from changing… it’s because your past, is YOU. YOU are the only one who can control your actions and your emotions… I guess it’s like controlling your own fate sort of thing.

“Wow Ric” Matilda said in awe of what he had just said. “That’s really deep. And you’re right. That’s why I admire Rocco and Nina, they’re trying to change and people won’t give them a chance.”

“In my experience people build up an image of you in their head and that’s how they will always see you, no matter how much you change.”

“You did it?” she told him. “I’ve known you through everything and I still think that you are that sweet, caring guy that has saved me so many times.”

“Maybe that was because of you” he said to her. “You gave me a chance when no one wanted to even know me. Maybe some people have the power to help others change for the better.”

Matilda smiled. “Thanks Ric, but you don’t have to flatter me…”

“It’s the truth Maddie.”

They walked in silence after that. Just enjoying each other’s presence. As they walked past the wharf, Matilda saw Nina sitting at the end.

“Listen Ric, there’s Nina,” she said. “Thanks for the chat, you’ve got some really good points there. I really need to talk to her though.”

Ric nodded. “Sure, I’ll be down at the diner if you need to talk again okay?” Matilda nodded and walked over to Nina.

ChapterThirtyEight:

“Hey how’s it going?” Matilda said to Nina.

“Hi,” Nina said glad to see a friendly face. “Not too bad I guess. Considering…”

“Rocco told me you were in hospital… what happened?”

“I was a little sick that’s all, it was nothing, but you know what doctors are like.” She looked out towards all the boats as they stood in silence.

“Have you ever been in love Matilda…” she asked finally. “Like really deeply in love?”

“I’m not really sure… I thought what I had with Lucas was true love…” said Matilda. “I guess you can love people in different ways. What’s this about?”

Nina took a deep breath and tried to hold back all her emotions. “I was in love once. Once... What we had… it was perfect.”

“What happened to him?” Matilda asked.

“He umm, he died.” Nina gulped. “That’s when everything in my life started going wrong.” She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.

“I feel like I don’t even know who I am anymore you know” she said wiping her eyes.

“Nina, what’s going on?”

“I just never thought that I would feel that way about anybody ever again…” she said tearily.

“Is there someone? Who is it?”

Nina wiped the tears from her eyes again and got herself back together. “Look it’s nothing,” she said. “It’s just me. I’m just scared that I’ll never move on… you know. There’s nobody, but I guess with everything that happened last night it’s all just getting to me.”

“I know what you mean” Matilda said quietly. “Something happened today, and… well… I don’t know what to feel about it. I keep thinking that maybe it’s all in my head.”

Rocco walked along the beach. He saw Johnny hanging around up by the surf club, so he decided to walk the other way. He was so conflicted. He felt like disappearing off the face of the earth. Nobody would care what happened to him. He had spent most of his life trying to hide his emotions, and He had tried so hard for most of his life to bury everything and now he could not even tell what was right from wrong. He knew one thing though. He knew how he felt about her and how his feelings had grown over the last few days. Maybe she could save him?

YAY! I really apologise for rushing those last few chapters... but i wanted to get to this one... there's a bit of a twist, so i hope i haven't written too confusing... i've probably already given the twist away anyways but here it is. Please let me know what you think of this... warning though... it's very fluffy stuff.

The words in bold are from a song called "Captured" by Bic Runga. It's on her "Birds" album and it really is a beautiful song. I thought that it just fitted perfectly with what's going in the chapter. I really hope you enjoy this bit as much as i enjoyed writing it...

ChapterThirtyNine:

I want you, when you are close to me

I know you, have laid a trap for me

Rocco walked along the path and saw her sitting by the wharf. She was alone, and he was glad. He knew that this was his chance to tell her how he felt. As he walked up to her, she glanced in his direction and gave him the brightest and most beautiful smile he had ever seen.

“Hey” he said shyly.

Black on the ground, I am still as a stone

Whatever changed my love, to despair

Light through the clouds, trapped the scent of a soul

In a moment my love, I am captured. Captured.

Nina looked up as he approached her.

As he smiled at her, she felt every rational sense in her body melt away.

“What are you doing here?” she asked him.

“I’ve been looking for you all day. I was worried.”

“I’ve been trying to avoid you,” she told him.

“I can’t let this go on any longer… I can’t stop thinking about you…”

She closed her eyes and dreamt that she was miles away. This could not happen. Not in a million years. She could not let anything happen.

“I knew when I first saw you,” he confessed. “There was something there. I thought I was just being stupid, but…” He gulped nervously as she stood up and faced him.

“Please don’t do this,” she said quietly.

“Why not?” he asked her. “For the first time in my life I’m being honest. Whenever I’m around you… It’s driving me crazy. And I know it’s doing the same to you.” She turned away from him, but he got closer to her and cupped her face in his hands.

Rocco couldn’t bear to hold it inside of him any longer.

“I think… I think I might be falling in love with you” he told her. “Isn’t that what it is when you can’t get someone out of you’re head.”

“I’ve been thinking about you too…” she said to him. “There’s just so much stuff going on right now and I just wasn’t sure how you really felt. I thought I was imagining it?”

“It feels like a dream…” he said. “But everything that’s inside me right now is real.” He leaned into her and kissed her gently on her lips.

Nina looked at him. She looked deep into his eyes. In that moment she was reminded of a love that she had felt only once before in her life. She wanted to push him away, but she felt safe while he was near her. She closed her eyes and remembered what it was like to love someone. She had tried to avoid him, but the feeling was just too strong. Memories came flooding back to her.

He was tempted to kiss her, but he wanted to make sure that she felt the same way he did. Looking at her, and holding her, it was the only time that he had ever felt weak. He wondered how on earth a girl like this could make him feel this way. No one had ever gotten this close to him before.

He bit his lip and ran his fingers through her dark hair. He gave in and leaned into her, keeping his hands at the side of her face. As he kissed her, Nina found herself kissing him back.

In a moment, my love, I am captured. Captured.

Rocco gazed into Matilda’s eyes as they stood silently on the wharf. He was so glad that he had finally confronted his feelings about her.

Rocco held her hand.

“So you feel the same way?” he asked her.

“Yeah,” she beamed at him.

“What do we do now?”

“I guess… I guess we just…” She pulled him back towards her and kissed him.

Whatever changes love to despair,

Nina quickly pulled away. ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t do this…”

“Why?” he asked her. ‘What’s wrong?”

She ran over all the thoughts in her head. To her it felt right, but it was so incredibly wrong. She knew that she was putting everything she had on the line if it went any further.

“I’m sorry Johnny,” she said quietly. “I just can’t.”

She pushed him right away from her and she ran as fast as she could down the beach away from him.

Ahh, so the reason has been revealed why there have been so many updates, all for chapter *counts on fingers* Thirty Nine! Thats alot of chapters. LOL. Great chapter, can't wait till the next update, will we be expecting a short wait again? More soon please

Thirty Nine chapters! i couldn't believe it myself...

I have typed way too much the last couple of days... my wrists and fingers are starting to get sore.

I'm not quite sure what will happen with the couples after this... but i do know that the next chapter will be about Jack.
