^^^ Thankies!!! :D

Chapter FourtyEight:

Ric stared at his dinner. He kept twisting it with his fork, moving it from side on the plate. He hadn’t even had a bite yet, he kept thinking about Matilda and…

“Ric, you didn’t see Rocco today did you?” Sally asked him.

Ric shook his head. “Nup, why would I?”

“It’s just, it’s getting pretty late and he hasn’t called or anything,” Sally said looking at her watch. “I just thought that maybe he might have said something to you that’s all… Ric… Hello… Ric?”

“Huh?” Ric said dazed. “Look I don’t know where he is, and I really don’t care.” He stood up and took his plate into the kitchen.

“You’ve hardly touched your food” Sally said worried, “Are you feeling okay?”

“Fine…” Ric moaned. “I’ve just got a lot of things on my mind.”

“Is it stuff at work?” Sally asked.

“It’s just stuff Sal, random stuff… normal life stuff…”

“Alright, well if you need to talk…”

“Yeah, I know. Thanks Sal.”

“Okay, well if you need me I’m just upstairs checking on Pippa. I’m always here for you Ric, whatever it is,” she told him.

Ric nodded and walked outside. He sat down at the table and rubbed his head. How come it seemed, that the girls that he fell for, always loved someone else?

He sat outside for a while thinking about Matilda, and how it was only now that he started to realise his feelings for her. He felt so stupid, he should’ve said something sooner…

He heard someone rustling around in the kitchen. “Grandad? Sal? Is that you?” he called out.

Rocco stepped out and fronted up to Ric. “It’s only me. Sorry…”

Ric sighed and rolled his eyes. “Try not to be so loud okay?” he snapped. “There are people trying to sleep.”

“Sorry, I was a little hungry that’s all…” Rocco explained.

“Yeah well next time you shouldn’t come home so late,” said Ric. “And by the way, it’s actually courteous to CALL if you’re going to be late. Sally was actually really worried.”

“Sorry,” Rocco said to him. “I was out with Matilda and I lost track of the time.”

Ric stood up and stormed back inside the house. Rocco followed him and asked if he was okay.

“Like you would really care anyway” Ric yelled at him. “Don’t act like you’re all goody two shoes. Not when we all know what you’re really like.”

Rocco stood back in shock. “How many times do I have to say sorry to you?” he asked Ric. “I honestly don’t want to cause any trouble or anything. I am trying to make an effort here.”

“Yeah, well I’m not interested in what you’re trying to do.”

“What’s your problem?”

Ric had had enough. He grabbed Rocco and pushed up against the pantry door. “You’re my problem,” he said angrily.

Sally rushed down the stairs and saw the commotion in the kitchen. “Ric, get off him” she yelled pulling Ric off Rocco. “What’s going on here?”

“Nothing,” said Rocco. “It was my fault, I was getting a bit aggro towards Ric that’s all.” Sally looked at them both. Ric walked behind her and rubbed his face. She knew Ric and she knew his moods…

“Rocco, do you mind leaving us alone. I just need to talk to Ric.” Sally said calmly. Rocco nodded and left, while Ric made his way to the sofa and sat down.

“Ric what’s going on with you?” Sally asked as she followed him.

“Nothing, Sal. It’s nothing.”

“Is this about Rocco staying here?” she asked him.

“Nup. It’s just…”

Sally sat down and put her hand on his shoulder. He always felt comforted by that, and now he wasn’t as scared to tell her about what was going on.

“Alright, it is about Rocco,” he said quietly. “But it’s more about... Matilda.”

“Matilda?” Sally said puzzled. “Well what is it exactly?”

“It’s just… I don’t want to see her get hurt that’s all. She’s one of my best friends and I just, I don’t want Rocco to hurt her.”

Sally sighed. “Aww, Ric…” she said sympathetically. “Look, sometimes I really wish that I could see into the future. Just so that I could tell people what was going to happen to them. If they’ll be in love forever or if they’ll get their heartbroken. I know you have deep feelings for Matilda, but I also know that right now she really likes Rocco and that he really likes her.”

“So what do I do then Sal? Just sit back and relax about it?”

“No, but if you fight Rocco I think inevitably you’ll just be pushing Matilda further and further away from you. The two of you are very good friends and if for some reason, it doesn’t work out with him, maybe you can be there for her, like she was there for you when you found out about Cassie.”

Ric nodded. “I guess you’re right. It’s just that she’s been through so much drama, I don’t want anything bad to happen to her again.”

“I know Ric,” Sally said rubbing his back. “Give Rocco a chance. If you talk to him I think you’ll find the two of you actually have a lot in common. He needs a friend that understands what he’s going through.”

Ric laughed a little. “Yeah, if anyone would know about that it would be me right? I guess it wouldn’t hurt.”

Sally smiled. “I’m not expecting to happen straight away, but at least for tonight… an apology maybe?”

Ric nodded. “Sure Sal. Thanks.”

“No worries,” she stood up and yawned. “Well I’m off to bed okay? See you in the morning.”

“Yeah. Night.” As Sally walked up the stairs, Ric sat on the couch and thought for a minute before heading up the stairs.

He knocked softly on Rocco’s door, before opening it. Rocco was sitting at his desk doing some homework.

“Hey, what’s up?” Rocco asked him.

“Listen about before…” Ric said uneasily. “I just wanted to apologise. I was just having a bad day that’s all.”

“Yeah, its okay. I’m not exactly the perfect house guest am I?” Rocco sighed.

“Is that cool if we start over again?” Ric asked. “To be honest I’m a bit of a hypocrite for not giving you a go…”

Rocco smiled. “It’s cool,” he said shaking Ric’s hand. “I’d really like it if we could be mates. Even if it’s just in front of Sally. Like I said before, I’m not here to cause trouble.”

“Yeah, I know. I know you’re trying to put you’re past behind you,” said Ric. “There is one thing we need to clear the air about though.”

“Yeah, what is it?” Rocco asked.

“It’s Matilda,” said Ric. “If anything happens to her…”

“Look the last thing I want to do is hurt Maddie.” Rocco told him. “I can promise you that I will never hurt her in anyway.”

“Good.” Ric nodded.

“I know you care about her a lot.” Rocco said. “She’s really lucky to have a friend like you.”

Ric headed for the door. “Yeah…”
