ChapterFiftyFour:

Martha crossed her arms and stood there with her lips tightly pursed together. “What the hell is going on Jack?” she shouted.

“Listen, it’s not what it looks like,” Kelly explained.

“Yeah, Martha…” mumbled Jack. He turned and squinted his eyes at Kelly. “What does it look like?” He started to tumble over, but Kelly quickly pulled him back up before he could.

“Martha, I was just thanking her for bringing me back to you,” he muttered. “My wife… the woman I love…”

“And who exactly IS she?” Martha yelled.

“I’m sorry” Kelly said holding out her hand, “I’m Kelly Worthington. I used to work with Jack. Ash kind of bailed on him and then Jack was sick. I didn’t want him walking around the city alone that’s all. I take it that you’re Martha…?”

Martha reluctantly shook her hand. “Yes, I’m Martha” she snapped. “Martha Holden. Jack’s WIFE.”

Kelly helped Jack walk into the room and he immediately curled up on the bed.

“Thanks Kel, you’re fantastic” Jack mumbled as he started closing his eyes.

Kelly sighed and turned to Martha. “Look, I’m sorry about before. He’s really out of it. It’s really weird actually because Jack didn’t even have that much to drink. I’m not really sure how he got this bad so fast?”

“It’s okay I guess,” Martha sulked. “I was only up all night worrying about him. This was supposed to be our quality time together and then Jack turns up at our hotel room with other woman!”

Kelly seemed very embarrassed. “Martha… I know how it LOOKS, but I’m an old friend of Jack’s and I just wanted to make sure he was okay. He was really sick outside the pub that’s all…”

“He should never have gone anywhere with that guy Ash anyway…” said Martha sullenly.

“Martha sweetheart…” Jack moaned. “Could you keep it down a bit? My head is absolutely spinning.

Martha sighed. “I’m sorry. Did you say your name was Kelly? I didn’t mean to be so rude. I’m tired and grumpy. I thought something bad had happened to him.”

“Jack should be fine” Kelly said giving Martha a nervous smile. “You’re right about Ash though. He can be trouble, especially when you throw alcohol into the mix. Luckily I have the day off today. But I can assure you that I will be giving Ashton a very big lecture the next time I see him.”

Martha giggled. “Spoken like a true police woman there.”

“Well what can I say?” Kelly laughed. “Listen tell Jack it was great to catch up with him. Hopefully next time he’ll be more sober.”

Martha felt bad about the way she had treated Kelly. “Hey listen,” she said as Kelly started to leave. “Why don’t you stay a while? Maybe we talk over some breakfast? We can trade stories about Jack?”

Kelly smiled. “Sure, I’d like that. Sounds like fun…”

ChapterFiftyFive:

Johnny sat down at one of the tables outside the diner and sipped slowly on his juice. He pulled out his phone and started texting as Matilda and Rocco made their way over to Nina and Ric who were still talking to each other.

“Is everything alright here?” Matilda asked them.

“Everything is… great,” Ric said grinning.

“Yeah, look it was all my fault,” Nina smiled. “I’m so clumsy…”

“As long as you weren’t doing it on purpose to get Ric’s attention…” Rocco joked.

Matilda quickly elbowed him in the gut before Ric and Nina saw her. “Sorry Nina,” Rocco said laughing. “I was just kidding.”

Nina was going bright red with embarrassment. “Gee thanks Roc,” she said. “Don’t be subtle about it or anything?”

“Well… what do you guys think about hanging out tonight at the surf club?” Matilda interrupted. “The four of us. It’ll be fun.”

“Maddie…” Ric said uncomfortably. “Could you make it any more obvious?”

“What?” Matilda said pretending to be shocked. “I don’t know what you’re talking about? What could I possibly be trying to do?”

Ric laughed and turned to Nina. “Listen, I’ll tag along if you do. I don’t want to be left alone with these two. If you don’t come, they might try and set me up with Colleen.”

Nina frowned. “Who’s Colleen?”

“Don’t worry who she is” said Matilda. “Are you in or not?”

“I dunno?” Nina said hesitantly. “I’ve got a lot of work to do… school stuff…”

“Please?” Matilda started to beg. “I promise it’ll be a good time.”

“Alright” Nina gave in.

“Great, so how about we all meet at the club about…8pm?” said Matilda.

“That’s good for me,” Ric nodded. Nina’s phone beeped and she hastily checked the message. She looked up towards the diner.

“Eight is good,” she smiled. “Listen I just need to grab some breakfast, you guys go on ahead to school, I’ll catch up with you later.”

Matilda and Rocco nodded and started walking off. Ric rubbed Nina’s shoulder. “I guess I’ll see you tonight then?” he grinned.

She smiled back at him. “Yeah… I’ll see you then.” When she was sure that Ric was gone, she headed up to see Johnny.

“How did you get my number?” she asked him with a hint of anger in her voice.

“I’m a resourceful guy,” he said raising his eyebrows. “I know how to get what I want.”

“Whatever, what DO YOU want?” she snapped.

“It’s about the job on Saturday. There’s been a bit of a change of plan.”

“What? You’re not going to do the job?” Nina said hopefully.

Johnny grinned. “The job’s still on. You just won’t be involved with any of that. I need you for something else.”

“Well spit it out then…”

“Let’s take a walk” Johnny said to her. “We can’t talk about it here.”

As they walked along the sand she found herself oddly comfortable in his presence. They were both quiet at first, and every now and then, their arms would brush slightly against each other. Deep down she wished that they were two different people who had met in totally different circumstances. She wished that she wasn’t so hostile towards him, but it was the only way she could fight her real emotions. Johnny was just glad to be alone with her. With his mates following him around all the time he sometimes felt like he was being suffocated. She was the one person that he hadn’t totally figured out yet, and he was desperate to know what it was that made her tick.

“So…?” Nina said breaking the silence. “What exactly is going on?”

“Well it’s simple,” Johnny said looking at the sand. “All you have to do is make a pick up for me.”

“A pick up?” Nina said puzzled. “What kind of pick up?”

“A courier’s going to be dropping off some gear. It’ll be too obvious if me or the boys do it. Nobody will suspect you trafficking illegal drugs.”

“How much are we talking?” Nina asked him.

“$50K worth.” He stopped at looked at her for a minute. “You think you can do that?”

“You must’ve pulled some strings to get your hands on that kind of stuff. It’s not easy,” she said seriously.

He shook his head. “We make the pick up and pass it along to someone else. Let’s just say I have some connections. Courier will drop it off outside the surf club around 11pm.”

“Wait? On Saturday night?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

“Are you crazy, there’ll be cops around for sure, there’s a party going on. It’s the stupidest time to make a drop off like that.”

“You obviously haven’t been in this town long.” Johnny laughed. “The cops here are all the rejects that can’t get a job in a real police station. They’re stupid as…”

“Still…”

“Don’t worry. They’ll never catch on,” Johnny assured her.

“So who’s going to help with the other job then?”

Johnny paused and took a breath before deciding to tell her. “I’m gonna get Roc to do it.”

Nina shook her head angrily. “No way! We made a deal. I said I’d help you if you leave him out of it.”

“Well, now you’re not helping me with that anymore, you’re helping on something else,” he said sarcastically.

“No way. I’m not doing it then,” she huffed.

“All Rocco will have to do is make sure the side door is unlocked,” Johnny snapped. “He’s my brother, and he’ll do what I tell him to do.”

“He wants out Johnny, why can’t you just leave him alone?”

“What’s it to you anyway?” he frowned. He wasn’t used to someone challenging his decisions, it annoyed him like hell, but he loved that fiestyness about her.

“Rocco is a good guy,” she said quietly. “He’s a genuine human being, unlike you. I honestly can’t believe the two of you are related.” She turned around to walk away, but Johnny grabbed her arm.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” he said angrily. “Not long ago you were all over me, I didn’t see you complaining then?”

She rolled her eyes. “We’ve been over this,” she yelled back at him. “YOU kissed ME! I was the one that broke it off and told you where to go. I thought you would’ve gotten the hint by now?”

They just stared at each other. Johnny was still holding on to her arm, but he loosened his grip a little. “I’d leave you alone if I believed you,” he told her. “You can fight me all you like… in fact that’s what I love about you. But you can’t fight yourself forever.”

His words hit a nerve but she tried hard not to let him get to her. “Get over yourself Cooper. I’ve seen how you treat your brother. Getting involved with you would be a punishment more than anything else. Especially if that’s how you treat people you care about.”

Johnny was a little wounded, but how was she to know that Rocco meant everything to him. He certainly never showed it, and he doubted that he ever would. There was something about HER though...

“You don’t know the first thing about me and Roc. You need to get over YOURSELF.”

She felt like slapping him, but she knew most of the emotion behind that would be out of lust, not anger. “You’re just upset because for the first time in your life you can’t have what you want. You can threaten me or whatever but get used to being rejected…” She stormed off in a fury leaving Johnny bewildered at what had happened.

"You still going to to the job?" he called out sarcastically after her. She didn't turn around and Johnny smiled to himself. He knew that she would break soon enough.
